Ok, before I continue with this story; I have added a shit load of new people to this blog and I feel it’s only fair to explain about Veronica at this point. For those who already know the full version and its origins I will be brief. Veronica is just an alter ego; she comes alive when I travel. Let’s just say I embody that free spirit when I’m on the road, so all the nonsense you here about, the crazy shit, excess drinking, dangerous activities, and just plain retardedness is all Veronica. It’s not shit I would normally do back home, well maybe some of it. So I say lets blame this all on Veronica, I didn’t do it. After having left the group back in Cuzco after the Inca Trail I was still in ... read more

11 uren vliegen van Auckland naar Santiago, Chili. Datum en vertrekuur: 2 februari ,17uur. Datum en uur aankomst 2 februari, 12h00. Merken jullie niks vreemd? Speciaal he? Santiago.

Leon and I looped back through to Santiago from Mendoza for a weekend with our favourite Chileanas. Aparently you can drive through the Andes back to the West coast in under 4hours. However, with the Friday traffic and sleepy border guards, the bus was delayed Argy-Chile border for 3hours. You useless Latinos. We eventually arrived to Completos and wine a good 3hours behind schedule. Ahhhh! I was a little gutted to find Mache was away on business for the entire time we were visiting Santiago. However, this was short lived as Sandra, along with more of Kathys friends - Marcella and Rocio arrived to Karthys apartment. The 6 of us crammed in to the car and headed to a little house party - where i spent my time yarning to a guy with a Jamiriqai tshirt. ... read more

And so we arrived in Chile... or rather we arrived a couple of hours before we reached the border post of San Pedro de Atacama. San Pedro de Atacama Our first taste of Chile was the crazy border crossing which seemed chaotic to say the least. We weren't allowed to leave the minibus until the tourist police said so. Then we had to leave our backpacks on the bus until they decided we could pick them up to be searched. Following a superficial search we were officially in Chile, passports stamped and ready to go. We headed into San Pedo, which is a small village on the edge of the Atacama Desert. We stayed for a day or so deciding that this small village is one that was too expensive for us and the activities mirrored ... read more

Arriving to Santiago from Bolivia was a real eye opener. After we left the airport we had to remind ourselves that we are still in South America as the place looked sooo european to us. Walking through clean streets with cars stopping at red lights and not constantly using their horns.... we were totally confused!!! How do we cross the road again??? You do NOT just step out and pray that you will make the other end? After a very easy bus and metro ride we reached Pauli´s office. We met Pauli in Rio on a hospitalityclub party and she kindly offered to host us while we are in Santiago. We dropped off our bags and made our way to the nearest cafe to sit down and digest the new surroundings. Quickly we were to find ... read more

1/31/07 12:50 PM Hi. Life is going pretty well here. I just cleaned my room today, and it feels a little cleaner, but not really. I guess probably just because it’s so small that it’s hard to make it feel clear. School started on Monday. We have 4 hours of Intesnive Spanish class Monday-Friday. There are five different classes and 3 levels; intermediate, intermediate-advanced, and advanced. I’m pretty stoked on being in the intermediate-advanced class, because the advanced class is all native speakers. Our teacher is named Andres and is the only male teacher in the program. I think he said his family is from Germany, and he has blondish-red hair, blue eyes, and a graying beard. He looks just as gringoey as any of us, so I’m trying to figure out what it is about ... read more

Siinä sitten ihmeteltiin vähän aikaa ja ... read more

1/28/07 11:17 PM Hola. I’m watching TV for the first time since I got here. I kinda wanted to watch something American, cause I imagine that Chilean TV’s bad. But I also wanted to watch something in Spanish. So I’m watching Latin MTV. That one cartoon that’s really vulgar with the black chick in orange with fox ears on her hat, and the black and white Betty Boop looking girl and and a pig with a unibrow and a pikachu-lookin thing. I guess I’ll turn it off now that I’m typing, though. Ok, anyway, I just spent the last couple days with the kids from the program. We went to Lago Rapel for an orientation weekend. There are three really great women working in the UC EAP study center here who are going to be helping ... read more

Santiago has worked very well as a base to plan further trips and for H to recover from her cold. The blazing sun and 30 degrees celcius have certainly helped. As such we haven't spent too much time in Santiago, but noticed a few things worth mentioning. Pharmacy seems to be the business to be in. The streets are littered with them, especially downtown, and we have no clue as to why. Either the Chileans are a very sickly people, hypocondriacs or very healthy due to the easy access to pharmacies. They look very healthy to us though, and are very friendly. Chileans are probably the most friendly people we've met on this trip so far. The service is usually superb and things work just as well here as in any western country, which is a ... read more

Sunday 21st January to Wednesday 25th January 2007. Being early to the airport to see Marg off had allowed me to be the first to check in and snag an exit seat and on an aisle to boot. My seat was at the front of a centre section which allowed me to stretch my legs out against the wall in front, useful I thought for when the inevitable cramps set in. The seat next to me was empty until the flight was all but full when a woman in her early sixties dressed in shorts, trainers and white socks came along. I thought she just had to be American but when we started speaking she told me she was from the South Island and wasted no time in letting me know she was the Deputy Mayor ... read more
