3/6/07 9:31 PM Well, that’s a real long time to go without writing about anything. Well, I’ve already started an e-mail that has all the details about Torres, so I’ll skip over that. What’s important about that is that Tiara, Christina and I are now very good friends with a lot of inside jokes, which is good to have. It’s great to have people to laugh with, even though when we’re together we pretty much only speak English. School is starting this week, though all of us gringos are confused because in California you sign up for classes like 2 months before they actually start, and the first week is the most important, but here registration doesn’t start until the first day of classes, and I guess that a lot of people don’t even go to ... read more

Täällä tuntuu tapahtuvan enemmän kuin millään ehtii kirjoittaa tänne. Silloin ensimmäisenä iltana tapasin heti tutorini. Sovimme tapaamisen messengerin avulla läheiseen Starbuck´s Coffeehen. Olin suomalaiseen tapaan vähän etuajassa, ja menin tilaamaan kaakaon. Starbucksissa on tapana kirjoittaa nimi kahvimukiin (?!), ja hän kirjoitti nimeni kuultuaan:Sloseph. Aika hyvin huonosti kuultu.

Research Leroy wakes me up to tell me he wants to hit the internet café. I’m groggy after staying up late watching “Cry Freedom,” which of course got me into that inspired activist mood where I think we all have to renew our vigor in fighting the good fight. But today, I guess, is not the day. Today, we have to figure out what to do about Chile. It’s Monday, and that means everything should be open and we can make the Argentina vs. Chile decision. It’s 9:30am, and we pull our clothes on and go outside to get on the web. Well, the Internet café that lies kitty corner from our apartment is closed. We head to the other one… closed. Hmm, when does the business day begin? We return to our apartment dejected. I ... read more

Taalla sita vihdoin ollaan - Etela-Amerikassa. Santiagossa on takana pari laiskaa paivaa. Saavuttaessa lentokentalle Paasiaissaarelta meita oli mies vastassa nimikyltin kanssa - eka kerta talla matkalla muuten. Meidan hostelli, Hostal de Sammy, oli hoitanut meille varauksen lentokenttataksiin. Olipa helppo tapa paasta sinne minne halusi. Museo, ... read more

Today will be better, that is our mantra. It is Sunday, so we expect a lot of things to be closed. First things first - food, then a bookstore to get a guidebook, then a walk in the park. We’ve also decided that the bad food isn’t worth the cost, and that grocery shopping and cooking is the way to go. We head toward the Mall El Centro, which is near El Mercado Central, where we had our first meal. The sun beats down on us again. I have made sure to wear sunblock, as our friend Sol has warned us of the high UV index here. I can hardly think in sun like this; I just want to get to shade or our destination. I maneuver the streets optimizing my time in the shade. Most ... read more

More Bad Food + Road Rage = Decent Meal The day got off to a slow start. Day one had been somewhat discouraging, but we hoped it was a fluke. We left the apartment around 1pm and took the Metro to El Barrio Suecia, considered to be a “dynamic commercial center” with a variety of shops. At the Metro station, there was a line but it did not take too long to reach the ticket window. The ride over took 15 minutes. As we exited the station, we began our search for food. The neighboring area to Suecia, Bosque Norte, is considered one of the best gastronomic centers on the east side of Santiago. The streets were noticeably less congested and many of the stores were closed. As we would soon find out, Santiago shuts down ... read more

I arrived in Santiago de Chile after a long and tiring wait in Toronto airport at 5am Uk time and checked into La Chimba Hostel in the Barrio Bellavista area which was very lively and full of bars and multicoloured fronted buildings, art galleries and restaurants. Very bohemian. My hostel was great, in a fantastic location, comfortable beds, small and friendly. The transfer from the airport was easy and everyone was helpfull without being pushy, what a change from Africa. In fact it was so easy I think I was a little disapointed. I was a bit paralized by indecision at first, a whole year ahead of me and I couldnt decide what to do first! I had planned to go down South and take the Navimag ferry to Puerto Natales and onto Torres del Paine ... read more

Arriving in Santiago was incredible. The city is massive and absolutly beautiful but I cant believe how modern it is. The cars are fancy, buildings tall and the people are dressed and act way more classy than anything ive seen elsewhere on my trip. I finally parted ways with Molly and Luke and took a cab into Barrio Brasil (a nearby neighbourhood) and checked myself into a hostal. I walked down into the common room and soon made friends with five australien guys that took me for a night on the town! Well actually more like the local girls they had met took me for a night on the town but it was tons of fun. We went for food at a chinese place and ate way too much. They made fun of the way I ... read more

From Good to Bad Air: Ringling Brothers Circus at 12,000 Meters Above the Andes Uh oh…we set the alarm for 7am and at 8:15am I heard, “Oh s***, what time is it?” We overslept! After going out two nights in a row and coming home late, it is no surprise that this would happen. It is not too bad because we had packed yesterday before we went out. But Meli still has to take a shower to get the nasty smoke smell out of her hair. By 9am we are in a cab and by 10am we are at the airport. Check-in is no sweat and security and customs are even easier. We are put on an earlier flight, which is even better. Foreign security measures really make TSA seem like the biggest joke. Actually, TSA ... read more
