After having been blessed with a couple of days full of sunshine, yesterday it was time for the rain to have its moment and we were essentially confined to the hostel for most of the day. Today, however, the rainclouds were just a distant memory with the promise of a real scorcher on the cards from the minute we set foot outside. We had no set route planned so simply let our feet do the walking. Our fist encounter was at the presidential palace (at least I think that's what it was...), an imposingly grand building flanked by guards at every corner and entrance. We had no idea whether you could go inside or not so we followed the crowds and found ourselves in the central courtyard after a quick security check. There wasn't a great ... read more

After a fantastic few days crossing the border illegally in a white water raft with a bunch of crazy but fun Irish people to legally crossing on a ferry with a group of loud, annoying Israelis, I have arrived in Santiago. After a brief game of "Where is Emma´s Passport?" we quickly established that it must still be on a plane because it is no longer in my bag. Oh dear. So much for being the organised, intrepid traveller (that thank goodness I never claimed to be). My passport is now cancelled and I am to report to the consulate in Santiago on Monday for what I hope will be a speedy reissue as I need to fly to NZ that night. Hmmmm.... Neither Elizabeth or I are panicking at this stage but Eliz is preparing ... read more

Today was to be my last day in South America, as I would be catching a flight to New Zealand at 23:00. Looks like I picked a good time to go. Today was incredibly wet. I'd had perfect weather for a month and now all of a sudden the weather had turned and it was raining so hard that some streets were flooding. When the rain eased off and armed with poncho and waterproof I made my way to the post office in the centre. I decided to send back things no longer required home (Cds with photos, Lonely planets on Peru and Chile, new jumper and peruvian hats as preasents). The chap sorting out for me at the post office was quite amusing (even running around with one of the hats at one point) and ... read more

The primary goal this morning was to make it to the long distance bus station and scope out ticket prices and availability for our onward travel to Valparaiso next week. We hopped on the great value and very efficient metro (subway), climbed a couple of steps at the station exit and hey-presto, we were there. In my broken Spanish I managed to find out that buses run every 20 minutes to Valparaiso - something that came as a positive surprise. We're used to there only being a couple of buses per day for our chosen destination so this was a welcome change. It also meant we didn't have to buy our tickets today so we headed back to the metro station and made our way across town to check out the funicular railway, one of Santiago's ... read more

Today I decided to go and visit the National History museum (not dinosauras - its not to be mistaken with our very own NATURAL history museum). This is situated in the northern half of the plaza de armas (havent quite worked out why every South American city I have been to so far has its main square called the "plaza de armas" - if antbody knows I'd love to find out why) The museum is located in Chiles first parlemant building. I walked in payed the 50p entrance fee and started. I quickley found out that obviously its all in spanish, so I went to ask for an some form of way of having it translated into English. They duly did in the form of an mp3 player. This worked out quite well apart from the ... read more

Today I decided to up to Barrio Bellavista (wherewe were the night before) and to the Parque Metropolitano. Being quite late (having spent much of the morning catching up with writing this travelblog) I decided to have lunch. Most of the places down Constitution (Main bar and cafe street) were very expensive, but managed to find a nice little well priced place, and again ate incredibly well (chicken in mushroom sauce with chips.) Id move here just for the food. I entered the Parque and took atram up to Cerro San Cristohal (A tall peak at 869m) and took in the view. Its from up here that you realise how modern Santigo is and how fast its moving (lots of cranes building new appartments and buildings) There is even a building which looks just like the ... read more

We arrived in Santiago around 7:30 am from Punta Arenas and headed to the ''Happy House'' hostel. The hostel is a beautiful old building that was once a home. Only a block from the subway, we really recommend this place. Our first job was to head, via the metro, downtown to the Brazilian consulate and apply for our visas. We were planning on only spending a couple of days here and head to Quito, Ecuador unfortunately the consulate office told us it would take five days for our visas to be processed and they had to hold our passports. Since we couldn't head to Quito without passports we were either stuck in Santiago or we had to go somewhere in Chile. We were scheduled to head to Easter Island in a few weeks but since we ... read more

We honestly had no idea what to expect of Chile or its capital city, Santiago, when we arrrived other than having been warned by numerous people to be extra vigilant with our stuff. Leaving the hostel armed with only the bare minimum, we made our way into the CBD, a kind of triangular shaped bit of the city centre flanked by the river on one side and the metro lines on the other two. Our first impressions of the city were far from what we had been led to believe. The weather was superb with a gloriously hot sun beating down and warming us in places that hadn't felt warm since we left Asia. All around us was a melange of new and old architecture fighting for supremacy on the narrow backstreets and on every side ... read more

Dave's Take on Santiago We decided awhile back that we would mostly shy away from Chile because of its budget busting abilities (this is definitely good for Chile though - as their economy is prospering) , but being so close we could not stay completely away. We opted for the mini bus option from Mendoza to Santiago, which is supposed to shave an hour or so off the travel time and the price was identical to the larger buses. An early AM departure at the now familiar Mendoza bus station to catch our CHI-AR mini bus. It was running a little late as we found our driver engaged in a rather heated discussion with another man behind the bus. Nonetheless we all crowded around the back with our luggage to be loaded - the driver barely ... read more

Hola amigos y amigas! It's hard to believe that just this morning we were still in New Zealand, still amongst a culture and language that we know and understand. So where are we now? In South America, that's where - and no-one here speaks English. Crikey! Our day began at the ungodly hour of 4.15am in time for our shuttle to the airport. Our flight was at 7am and by 8.30am, we were in Auckland for the second time. Despite having over 9 hours to kill before our connecting flight, we didn't bother heading out into the city and instead explored the airport's facilities for a while before finding a corner to call home for the afternoon. Our flight to Santiago left on time at 5.25pm and I can't complain about the quality of the Lan ... read more
