1/23/07 11:51 PM Hola queridos, I am in Santiago, Chile. Today was my first day here. The internet connection is weak in the hostel and I don’t have ALL that much to write about, but today was an eventful day nonetheless and I want to write about it, so I think I may start keeping a log or something and sending it out periodically. The whole trip went pretty smoothly. Mom and I drove down to LA Sunday morning, had lunch with my beloved godbrother Derek and his girlfriend Arlene, and then settled in at my uncle and aunt’s house. My aunt, Jenny, has a friend who just married a Chilean guy from Santiago, so they had them over for dinner, and Claudio told me all about Santiago city life and drew all over my map ... read more

Claire: finally a big city! it had starbucks (mmmm!). we went to the zoo, we looked at a big statue of a virgin on a hill, we marveled at the nice weather and we got really, really, really drunk. the measures of vodka here are more than half the glass. also, we sort of decided we dont want to come home, not yet at least... so we changed our flights and booked new ones to go to buenos aires in argentina. in theory we will now be home in march. ill let you know how that goes. next stop argentina! Ross: Ok so I’ve not posted for a while and that’s because I’ve really nothing worth saying about Bolivia. It’s a beautiful country with amazing scenery but that’s about all its got going for it (apart ... read more

Our last day in Santiago was definately memorable. So we were informed by Vicho (Carmen´s son who was kind enough to show us around Santiago the first day) that rather than go to a soccer game (which we will hopefully do sometime before the end of this trip. But apparently Chile is not a good place to go to one, so we´ll try again in Argentina) that we could go to a Rodeo! Longingly remembering my cowboy boots back home, we obviously said 'Yeee haww'and off we went to the rodeo! We left Santiago at about 11 the next afternoon in Carmen's other son (Cote) and his wife's car. So it was Me, Callie, Cote, Pamela and Vicho...off to the rodeo. Now..Let me explain this..this wasn´t just any rodeo, this was a Chilean rodeo..full of Huasos ... read more

There is nothing exciting in this log, there are no adventures or exciting places to visit. I just wanted to tell all of you that communication and connection can find a way through language barriers. There was no hot passion or lustful desires. It was two people doing the best they could under the circumstances. Today me, Yasna, Julia and Jovica left Vina Del Mar back for Santiago. For me and Jovicia it was back to Matias house. For Julia it was back to Australia (she had a flight to catch from Santiago) and for Yasna it was a sad fare well to a best friend (Julia) who had shared a year long friendship with. It was like any other day we all got up around 2pm after having a big-huge night out till 6am (sorry ... read more

Looking back I feel like Arica got shafted in my last blog entry. And it was really quite a nice little place! So i felt i should mention it again…check out the pictures in my last blog..anyways… we survived our 28 hour bus ride from Arica to Santiago. Wow, we had really really low expectations for how it was going to be. But it wasn´t actually that that that horrible. I mean, it was bad. But it wasn´t as bad as the other buses that we’d been on that smelt disgusting or had no leg room. So we dealt with it…Spanish dubbed movies, horrible cheese and salami sándwiches (for breakfast lunch and dinner) and everything else that came with 28 hours of confinement. So here we are, in Santiago. We are staying with Carmen, a lady ... read more

So I left you last hanging on the edges of your seats wondering whether or not we´d make it out of Perú alive... well, don´t you worry! Here we are in Chile, and save for the North American-esque prices and the surprisingly modernized EVERYTHING, we are enjoying ourselves immensly! Our border crossing was surprisingly uneventful, if not incredibly long, and we made it to Arica, Chile on Saturday afternoon. What a pleasant surprise to find a city with miles and miles of beach, wonderful old buildings, fountains and a safe atmosphere that didn´t have us trembling in our little sandles if we had to walk at night. There was even a drive-thru McDonalds 2 blocks from our hotel (that we did NOT go to!!!). It was like pulling up into a small town in the States, ... read more

Wow! I definitely had a great time during my first weekend in Chile! This Saturday, January 6th, we left for our first excursion at 8:30 a.m. from the University. I was so exhausted from going out the night before that I fell asleep on the bus (along with everyone else). We first went to a town right outside Santiago called Maipu where basically all there was to see was a really big cathedral with a huge courtyard that resembled Saint Peter´s square in Rome. Next, we traveled to Pomaire, another small town where they are known for pottery. I actually helped the guy make an icecream bowl as well! For lunch, we went to a local restaurant in Pomaire. I really wanted to drink water there but all they had was wine or tap water and ... read more

We proceeded from the beach back to Santiago where Kathy - the girl Leon had met in Vina, lovingly put us up in her apartment. Lucky for me, she had a spare room for me too! It came complete with a giant Sponge Bob, Buzz Lightyear duvet and Mickey Mouse pillows! The nightlife did not slow down at all and i found myself getting the opportunity to practice or should i say begin to learn and speak Spanish. Up until this stage we have been mainly speaking in Spanish for just ordering food and bus stations. To explain further, Leon and I were put in the fortunate postion whereby Kathy had several young single professional friends. As all guidebooks say Chilie is very European and a really pretty city to walk around, the small shop fronts and sidewalk kiosks giving it away as not actually being in Europe! It was a complete revelation to be in a country where bananas are not a coveted good, need not be guarded at all times and do not cost a fortune, in fact I think all my fruit came to the grand total of 20p. One of Santiago's parks has the most wonderful pool over set with waterfalls, whose spray lightly hits you and is a great reprieve from the overwhelming heat! However, you would not believe how many couples there are to be seen all over the place....... Managed then to order and buy sushi, which for someone with a hangover, severe jet lag ... read more

¡Hola! My first blog entry from Santiago! Ashley and I have arrived to Santiago, Chile safe and sound and have started classes. I am having the time of my life already, and I know it´s going to keep getting better. Our plane trip was pretty normal (I actually slept on the plane for about 5 hours, so I was lucky!) We got to the airport around 9:30 a.m. on the 3rd of January (7:30 Eastern time). While we were standing in the line for customs, we actually saw the group from Furman that is studying here! It was really funny seeing 20 people that you know in the middle of South America (they were even more surprised than us!) We arrived before the Delaware group and were suppose to wait for their plane which was scheduled ... read more
