12 November, Sunday... Gaining a day by crossing the international dateline isn't as easy as it sounds, Chilean officials did not help make passport control a speedy affair so after two hours of queuing we only gained two hours on the day. I managed to watch three movies on the plane so I count that as a good result. I got to practise some Spanish with the bus driver who had clearly been waiting since our landing and it turns out I understand more than I thought I would. Arrived at hostel at 3:30ish and went for a short walk about the local area, to the supermarket and ate. Great day. 13 November, Monday... Determined to do more today and make the most of my time in another continent we got up early and at about ... read more

12 November 2006, endlich wieder in Chile. ... read more

Ok Santiago...I wake up in the morning and head out for a lesuiry stroll. The city is fairly easy to orientate so i changed some money over and did a few things to prepare for my tour which starts tomorrow. I made a bit of a mistake in going to subway for breakfast...considering my spanish is so bad i decided to pick the place where they ask you the most questions for your order (bad idea)...yes my sub was totally not what i wanted but i know you would be proud of me dave! continued my stroll through some park when i was approached by some random dude who recognised i was a tourist... (by the way everyone in chile is chilen, i am the only white guy. and all the chilien´s are like 5 foot ... read more

We´re in Santiago, Chile for just a day and a half, so we´re off this morning to explore as much of the sights as we can. So far so good... we found a great little neighborhood for dinner last night and had some excellent sushi . A welcome change after the mountains of beef we have been eating. Will catch up with the rest of the blog tomorrow when we get back to LA. Leaving tonight on a red eye to Atlanta, and then back to La La Land by noon on Sunday. Hate to see the trip end... it has really been wonderful. See you all soon!... read more

Day 2 - Santiago Our last day! Determined to make the most of it, we set out on foot with a big agenda. We hopped on the subway, which was the nicest subway we’d ever been on, anywhere. Totally clean, well, lit, and with stores lining the underground tunnels. We walked all around the government buildings, which were actually really pretty. Then we made our way to the shopping district, where we browsed around and watched some wild street performers. It was a gorgeous day, perfect for walking, which was good since we had a lot of ground to cover. We made a stop at a huge farmer’s market, that specialized in fresh fish. It reminded me of the market in Seattle, but was so much bigger. Dead fish, shrimp, oysters, calamari everywhere! There were also ... read more

There is always something magical about arriving in a country for the first time. I love the feeling of having a whole new place, or in this case a continent, to explore. It is quite a buzz, albeit also somewhat disorientating at first. After a 13 hour flight from Madrid I had to endure a horrendous queue for customs before eventually emerging out of the airport and facing the inevitable mass of taxi drivers trying to lure me to into their cab. There were the usual lame lies - I was assured that the bus was 10 blocks away, only to find it about 10 yards from the entrance. On arrival at the bus station the next task was to get a ticket for the metro. This was easy enough, although I was rather alarmed to ... read more

Bus Ride - Mendoza to Santiago We asked for a 7:00 wake up call because we had to catch the bus to take us over the Andes into Santiago, Chile. The call came, and bleary eyed, we packed up all our stuff and waited for our breakfast. We waited and waited, annoyed because they were supposed to bring it at 7:30, and it wasn’t there, and we were going to be late. It wasn’t until we called downstairs to inquire, that we realized our wakeup call had been an hour early! Nice! At least it hadn’t been an hour late, I guess. We got to the bus station early, and waited for them to check us in. We had seats on the top level of the double-decker bus. The most coveted seats are the first seats ... read more

It normally requires a lot to make me blush in the U.S. It may be the passionate expression used by Chileans that has influenced me to easily let that pink tint steadily climb up my face. Needless to say, I have blushed more in my 2.5 months in Chile, than I have over the past five years at home. It began with my endless battle with the word "alcachofa". Artichoke. Since day one of using that word I have only been able to produce "alfachoka", a variation of the original. It all came to a head on one of our visits to a favorite pizzeria here in Santiago, Cuidadano. I was ready. I practiced. The waiter approached, I made my attempt to order pizza with artichoke hearts, and failed. I could only say "alfachoka". I then ... read more

well, studying is a pain and since i am not traveling that much, i am not updating my blogs. well after leaving buenos aires ( the best city) i came with my program to study for 2 months in santiago chile. i have been here for a month and so far, this is what i have observed. chile itself is a skinny diverse country with probably the most stable economy in south america. after talking with people, they say that it is the best country in south america to do buisness becuase, the people are reliable, things work and function, corruption is the lowest, laws work and are enforced. the country, its tradiciones and government are very conservative and the church still has lots of influence. so i leave in the providencia, which is near the ... read more
