Hola amigos y amigas! It's hard to believe that just this morning we were still in New Zealand, still amongst a culture and language that we know and understand. So where are we now? In South America, that's where - and no-one here speaks English. Crikey! Our day began at the ungodly hour of 4.15am in time for our shuttle to the airport. Our flight was at 7am and by 8.30am, we were in Auckland for the second time. Despite having over 9 hours to kill before our connecting flight, we didn't bother heading out into the city and instead explored the airport's facilities for a while before finding a corner to call home for the afternoon. Our flight to Santiago left on time at 5.25pm and I can't complain about the quality of the Lan ... read more

Left early to the bus Terminal and jumped onto the bus to Santiago (3 buses were heading to santigo all 10min apart from each other) The 6 hour journey was very comfortable but due to limited seats I was forced to sit at the back. I had to hold my breath every time the loo door opened as the smell wasnt the greatest. Arrived in Santiago at 3 and attempted to grab another bus to the area where the Hoastel was (La Case Roja - Recommended by everyone I had met on the way down) Couldnt work out what the hell was going on so went to grab the metro instead. The Santigo unbderground is really great, easy to use, clean and quick. It was hard work trying to find the Hoastel and it was really ... read more

After 16 hours in transit, we finally touched down in Santiago. Within 5 minutes of leaving the airport, Nath was already being mistaken for a South American, with everyone rambling at him in Spanish - only to be met with a blank stare. After settling into our cute Hotel Paris (at $20 a night) in a little cobblestoned neighbourhood, we set out to explore. Downtown Santiago is a maze of bustling pedestrian malls packed shoulder to shoulder with people (doesn´t anyone work here?) and filled with street performers. We were starving and to our absolute delight, we discovered a local favourite called ´completo´ which is essentially a hot dog but piled with salsa, guacamole & mayo - Nath has become addicted. These things are sold in little diners devoted solely to completos, as well as completo ... read more

2/7/07 4:24 PM Riding buses in Santiago is quite the experience. I don’t remember very clearly how the combis were in Chiapas (did we even take real buses? I just remember combis), but I’m pretty sure that they waited until people were all the way in the vehicle before they took off. In the past all of the buses in Santiago have been privately owned, and the micreros (bus drivers- a bus is called a micro here) and a bus driver is paid for the number of tickets he sells in a day. The result is dozens of buses zooming around the streets of Santiago as quickly as possible, stopping on any street corner regardless of the absence of a bus stop, driving with their doors open, driving with so many people during rush hour that ... read more

well, heres a little update for you all. Our last days in Peru ( for now) were spent in the incredible depths of the canon del colca( worlds second deepest canyon short by 100 meters from being the deepest), exploring the many enchantments of what nature has instore for us if only we take the time to look. trekking up and down the forever increasingly steep canyon switchbacks, watching the condors( huge native birds) soaring above, watching to local peoples with their burros trotting, humming through their daily lives, camping at the very depth of the canyon, swimming in the river at the bottom listening to the roar of the river, feeling as small as an ant............... There are really no words to describe the enchantment of that place. At the moment we are in santiago ... read more

We never intended staying for almost a week in Santiago but our hostel was so nice that we couldn't bear to leave. The weather has been perfect (hot and sunny) but Santiago suffers from a terrible smog problem. If this is the good time of year, we cannot begin to imagine what it is like in the winter. So, what have we done? Well, we've looked around the historical buildings and eaten fish at the central market. We climbed the hills and rode the funicular and teleferico cable cars. We swam in a beautiful swimming pool and began to get our tans ready to attack the beach! We visited the Concha y Toro vineyard which was great. The tasting was very pleasant and we are now the proud owners of two great wineglasses. Unfortunately they are ... read more

First three weeks in Santiago, studying Spanish, gorging on seafood, getting to know the culture and people. The arrival was spectacular. After 24 hours of travel and 3 plane changes, I woke up with a grand view on Santiago from atop, a city surrounded by mountains, in a close proximity of the ocean. I was also able to discern the vineyards, as tiny spots of green space, nested in the suburbs of the city, and I imagined my favorite wine- Marquis de Casa Concha. I always wondered where the lovely grapes came from; and now I was finally going to see them. It was quite easy to settle and find my way around. The country is quite “civilized”, with great infrastructure and extremely friendly and welcoming people. If you get lost, or just stop to ... read more
