We enjoyed a half day tour of Santiago yesterday. Interesting sights and an impressive city. From a central viewpoint on the city's tallest hill you can view miles of tall, modern apartment buildings. Not sure if living here would be great though! Long hours and considerable public transport issues despite its excellent Metro (underground) system. Today we visited Aquitania winery in the Maipo valley. A small boutique winery that exports cabernet, camenere and chardonnay products to Europe and the USA. Along with our travelling companions Bronte and Graham (who we met on the ship) we then proceeded to have lunch in a very local cafeteria in an arcade. From the looks we got we don't think they have too many tourists there. In fact Santiago is very much free of tourist effects, eg. no souvenir shops ... read more

Hola amigos, The last month of holidays has been a frenetic adventure with something new happening every day. My mates Colin & Gary turned up at the airport at midnightish on the 15th February, after they were told not to leave the airport without the Chofeur, so after we got to our hotel I took them staight to a bar for a couple of beers to get them into the reality they are in a safe place & they need not worry about any dangers they had been told about. The next morning we were up early & picked up by the talkative Jenny to be shown the City tour, an interesting way to see the churches, museums, rich areas & slums all mixed into the tour. After the tour we had lunch vouchers at a ... read more

After another day at sea we arrived in Puerto Montt, a coastal city (capital of Chile's Lakes region) of about 150,000. We took a day tour to an interesting museum about the many German settlers that arrived in the mid 19th century, then took a fairly boring tour of a smallgoods factory much like the ones in Australia! Then some wine and meats by Lake Llanaquihue, the third largest lake in South America. We enjoyed our last day at sea before disembarking in Valparaiso this morning. This city of 350,000 is home to Chile's main port and navy and is very interesting as extremely steep terrain and all housing is built haphazardly on any spot they can find. Took in the views on a short city tour then headed for Santiago. We are in a pleasant ... read more

If you have been reading our blogs for the last 2 and a half months, you would have probably noticed that we have been having a great time. But unfortunately, if we kept going we probably would not have jobs to go back to (thanks Maribyrnong!) and would eventually run out of money. Hence, we are going home tomorrow - all good things must come to an end. Now that we have about 35 hours left of our trip, we thought a summary and overview of the trip would be an appropriate way to celebrate the end of a wonderful adventure: Number of days: 77 Number of days with 'stomach issues' (both Georgie and Bryce): 20 Number of injections in Georgie's bum to stop her from vomitting: 1 (thank god) Number of hostels/hotels: 30 Number of ... read more

Pitures to Follow...... Santiago...the capital of a country that is over 4000 km long and never more than 200 km wide, situated roughly in the middle, and in between the highest of the Andean mountains and the pacific ocean. A city we only had a couple of days to explore - so what did we do? We visited the Presidential Palace - the place where the ex-president, Salvador Allende, was killed (the official story is he committed suicide) when the Military regime bombed the place at the start of the coup d'etat in 1973. I hoped to learn a bit more about this, but the tour was predominantly about the palace itself, and did not include a history lesson. It is a strange place - almost like a country estate, with the guards dressed up in ... read more

Taas on ehtinyt paljon tapahtua, ja monta uutta paikkaa on nähty viimeisen merkinnän jälkeen. Sain kuin sainkin tutorini kiinni. Loppu hyvin kaikki hyvin. Muina aineina minulla... read more

This blog is being written almost two weeks after our last day in Santiago. A lot has happened since then, and our next blog on The Match and The Move will bring you up to date. But first, we need to say goodbye to Chile. Too Little Too Late We wake up at the usual hour and breakfast is hearty and delicious because of our grocery shopping yesterday afternoon. Meli immediately begins packing and Leroy follows suit. Our flight is at 11:30pm, but we are planning on leaving at 6pm to check in early and take advantage of the Admiral’s Club. That, and we really don’t have anything else we want to do in Chile. I suppose we could go back to Bellavista and enjoy the cafés and lovely desserts. But I think we both are ... read more

No, sihteeri suositteli yrittää huomenna uudestaan. Täällä aika vain tuntuu venyvän ja venyvän. Jos kuuntelee vain puheita, voisi uskoa tämän olevan maailman tehokkain ja mahtavin paikka. Retoriikka tuntuu olevan puhujilla hallussa. Tästä esimerkkinä kaikki koulumme tervetuliaispuheet, joiden perusteella olisi voinut päätellä täältä sikiäviän vain superihmisiä, ja koulumme olevan huippuunsaviritetty maisteritehdas. No, näiden superpuheiden jälkeen tuli maili, jossa kerrottiin tuntien alkamisen siirtyvän viikosta kahteen tiedekunnasta riippuen, koska koulun remontti venyy. Koulumme on jaettu kolmeen kampukseen, ja tiedekunta... read more

Happy Birthday Meli, but why are your fingers so dirty?! Up early in the morning with a whole day to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the birth of Meli. I tell her from the jump, “what baby wants, baby gets!” She wants sushi and to see Pablo Neruda’s house. Done and done! We drop off our laundry—who really wants to get back to the USA on Saturday with laundry to do—and walk to Restaurant Japon. The stroll over is in the opposite direction we usually take, and we start to see everything we wanted to see from Santiago. Fruit stands, bigger and better markets, bookstores, restaurants, and more. Once we get to Japon, a place Meli was lucky to find on the web and that was on a street our map didn’t label, it turns out ... read more

In Honor of Hemingway, Vino Tinto as an Eyeopener The plan for today was to check out what’s further afield, with Valparaiso as the chosen destination. In the end, it came down to priorities: go to Valparaiso and take a chance on missing Barcelona vs Liverpool in the UEFA Championship Quarterfinals, or play it safe. Have I mentioned how much of a Ronaldinho fan Meli is? One week ago we were up at 8am watching Barcelona in Buenos Aires. I watched Valparaíso receive the small envelope in the mail ala college applicants…rejected! Plus, we slept in and would not reach Val until early afternoon at best. Meli is not a gambler; she only bets on sure things, right Jak? She got up and made brunch and we settled in to the couch for some good ol’ ... read more
