Nov. 2007 - Dec. 2007 (Easter Island / Isla de Pascua / Osterinsel / Rapa Nui - Chile) url=http://picasaweb.google.es/drtrek.leonardoknopr/20071118IslaDePascuaEasterIslandOsterinselRapaNuiChileTrip's Pictures It's time to write a bit again...Well I came back a few weeks ago. This time I did the trip I wanted to do last year. No, I didn't the trip to Europe, but I visited te southest Island of the Polinesia. One of the populated territory most isolated of our planet, nevertheless has developed a surprising and ancient culture. Its captivation comes out from the natural beauty of the landscape and fuses with the mysteries and the wealth of the people. As soon as you visit the island, you'll share the reasons why was declared Patrimony of the Humanity by the UNESCO (1995) and Historical Monument and National Park. Arriving there was soooo cool. Jamie: Easter Island, Isla de Pascua to give it its Spanish name, or Rapa Nui to the locals, is the most remote inhabited place in the world, 2000 km from the nearest human settlement on Pitcairn Island, and 3700 km from the Chilean coast. It is not really part of South America (other than it belongs to Chile), more the Eastern edge of Polynesia. The people, language and culture are polynesian. We just couldn't resist visiting such a remote place as Rapa Nui during our travels in this corner of the world. Arriving at the tiny airport, we were greeted by the hostel owner by a garland of flowers each. He then proceeded to give us a tour of the main town, Hanga Roa, in his beaten up van, before delivering us to the hostel. After ... read more

Iorana, Hola and Kia Ora from Rapa Nui - Isles des Pacuas - Easter Island...what a place! They greet you at the airport with a necklace of tropical flowers which seems to be an appropriate thing to do on an island in the Pacific, but once you look around it´s actually totally incongruous with the surroundings which in the most part are entirely barren. And I´ve been looking pretty hard and am yet to find out where they grow the flowers! The island is not that big and there is a bit in the middle that has trees and some crops growing, but the coastal areas which make up a large part of the place are desolate and actually pretty bizarre. You could be on the moon, not that I´ve been to the moon obviously, but ... read more

Det er det vi skal gjoere, og saann er det bare. Naa har vi vaert i Santiago i 9 dager. Uken foer leide vi bil. Vi kjoerte rundt i landet, soer for Santiago. Var innom mange smaa landsbyer. Noen koselige, men de fleste var helt like. Ganske kjedelig egentlig. Ingen snakker engelsk her (bortsett fra noen i Santiago) og det gjoer det ganske vanskelig for oss. Det tyder ... read more

Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is only accessible via Santiago, Chile or via Papeete. Since Chile has enough in and of itself to warrant a trip, we decided to interrupt our French Polynesian vacation with three days in Easter Island. For all the photos from this and many other trips, please visit - our Easter Island page Easter Island is mainly known for its "moai", which are large stone statues with faces and bodies. They were left all over the island, mainly close to the sea. Tribal wars resulted in most of the moai being knocked over, but restoration projects are slowly erecting them on their original platforms. From Papeete, there are only flights twice a week into Easter Island. So, either... read more

Sob! My last day on Easter Island and the plane was due to depart at 1310. I jumped out of bed for possibly the first time since I was a child and raced about, packing up. Packed up, I took the jeep for a last drive round Hanga Roa, just taking photos. I had time to visit the Museum for some more culture and background on the sites I had visited over the past few days. Went back to Tahai for a last look-round the place before moving down to the Harbour and its´single Moai. As promised, I filled the jeep´s petrol tank right up and returned it to the hotel car park for the chap to collect it. At the airport, it took next to no time to check in, and at the same time, ... read more

Today is my last full day on the Island, so I elected to srive back to some of the sites I visited during the full day tour, in the hope of having those sites to myself or at least, without a horde of tourists like myself taking dozens and dozens of photos. My first stop was back at Rano Raraku, the Moai "nursery". This time, I just enjoyed walking alone amongst the Moai and taking a closer look, just absorbing more details that I had missed the first time round. After a while of just wandering aimlessly, I was approached by a friendly Park Ranger, who took me up to the top of the crater, a somewhat stiff climb (but miles easier than the 1000 Inca Steps) with stunning views of the crater lake, which while ... read more

Today, I became a proud hiree of a Suzuki Vitara 4-wheel drive car. Never mind that I had no idea how to engage the 4-wheel drive bit, I was determined to explore the Island! After a tentaive test drive to the local supermarket to stock up for a picnic lunch (bread, cooked meat, cheese, soft drinks and chocolate) I headed out of town. It didn´t take long. Before I knew it, I had run out of paved road and was climbing up an extict volcano (at least I hoped it was extinct) and the "road" was becoming rougher with each passing kilometre. Naturally, on my map, it was designated a main road(!) After 40 minutes of bumping and crashing about inside the Jeep, not meeting a single soul, I arrived at the crater of Rano Kau. ... read more
