We are getting to know Santiago airport really well now, this is our 3rd visit in 4 weeks. Our first impression of Easter Island was that it wasn't long enough to land our plane. We were later to learn that not only is it big enough but it's built to accomodate an emergency landing of the shuttle and the Concord has also landed there....so much for my knowledge of airstrips! Up to a day before we arrived we still hadn't booked any accomodation and Jackie was getting a bit worried that we would arrive and have no bed so ended up booking this accomodation from the Lonely Planet book which indicated that it was mid range but I think we have a different idea of what constitutes mid range....at about $200 per night I feel it's ... read more

:( Lonely planet: Hanga Roa: population: 3800 With all the attractions almost on its doorstep, Hanga Roa makes the obvious base ... read more

Lonely planet: Rano Kau & Orongo ceremonial village: Rano Kau is probably the star attraction of Rapa Nui, and rightly so. Be prepared to fall on your knees in awe when you first see it, preferably on ... read more

Rapa Nui is a small island with a small town, Hanga Roa. We, Me, Jut, Pete, Dan, and Cristina came to Rapa Nui to do a biological inventory of some of the caves. We all fell in love with the island and the people, it is very laid back! It rained 4 out of 8 days, but this didn't stop us, we caved, mapped and collected bugs. We had one day to look around the island, so we took the truck and cruised the the whole island in the rain. The Moai ( the heads) were all over the island and we visited the quarry where the were carved, no mystery here, no aliens. Enjoy the photos. I return to the states on August 23rd. I can't wait to get back to my beautiful wife Leslie, ... read more

(Matt)- Time Warp - Due to the restrictions of our round-the-world plane ticket we had to fly from Auckland (NZ) over Easter Island to Santiago (Chile) and then back to Easter Island. Just a jump to the right and a step to the left (if you know the song don´t get pedantic!). Know as 'Rapa Nui´ to the locals and ´Isla de Pascua´ in Spanish, our long route to Easter Island crossed numerous time zones and the International Date Line. I was slightly dissappointed that more wasn´t made of crossing the date line, maybe a big party where we could all have got drunk and had a go at flying the plane, instead we lost 24 hours with barely a whimper! We left Auckland at 5.30pm and arrived in Santiago five hours earlier than when we ... read more

Its not often that your presented with the true oddities of the world, but for us this 16th of July was lived twice - with lots of scrummy airplane food to help the time just fly by (dededumph tsh). It´s a strange mathematical fix that has you leaving at 5 in the evening, spending 12 hours on a plane and arriving at midday 5 hours before you left. Suffice to say we enjoyed the oddity and haven´t slept since - combined with the travelling Brazillian students ability to party longer and harder than man ever has before (just a shame they only know 2 songs). It was all worth it, however, as after a short stop off in the Chillian capital and surprisingly vibrant city of Santiago de Chile we were headed to one of the ... read more

Well, we are really are finally here. For the history of Easter Island, please consult Lonely Planet or your local library or if you are lazy, try Wikipedia. Needless to say the five hour flight was worth it. It is interesting in that I came to this place with a whole bunch of questions about the Moai. I am leaving with more. It seems that in absence of written information about the histoy of the Island, Rapa Nui´s people rely on the oral tradition. Considering that small pox nearly wiped out the population (down to a little more than 100 native survivors), lack of natural resourses and fighting between clans (long ears vs. short ears....I am not making this up) that it is amazing that there is as much information as there is. As far as ... read more
