Welcome to the south pacific and quite possibly the greatest place on earth!! Easter island is not only known to be the most isolated place in the world, as it is farther from another "mainland" than any other place in the world!!!!!!! So when we are talking south pacific...we´re definitely talking south..and definitely talking pacific! On the island one feels the most isolated that one ever could being in an inhabited area! Weds- Lauren, Sarah, Elsie, Laura and I headed out from Santiago to Isla de Pascua! We arrived at 8pm, its two hours behind Chile. We were greeted with "leis" and were taken to our hostel. We walked around town a bit but most everything was closed so we just went back and hit the sack. Thurs- We woke up early, only to see an ... read more

Soooo much has been happening in the last week. I headed back from Valparaiso and in the bus terminal decided to check my emails and do a bit of surfing as you do when I found a ticket to Easter island for a bargain price. I then spent the rest of the afternoon backing up photos etc and sorting myself out for an early morning flight. It was a perfect week and has been named the ´holiday from the holiday´. At the airport I bumped into 5 other travelers and we used out collective power to get a bargain price for accommodation. We were very lucky and had a great place to stay at the family owned Chez Joseph. We were also whisked off on a 12 hour tour the following day to see the whole ... read more

I must confess that the favourite part of planning this big trip has been these 2 weeks.. Crossing the South Pacific really has been a bit of a dream to me on many a rainy afternoon sat at my desk at work back in London, and here I was, finally about to do it... Easter Island, Tahiti, Fiji - a slightly more exotic Xmas and New Year than back at home!! Now, this is an expensive part of the world, so we were looking to save money what ever way we could, and the ultimate in budget accomodation is, obviously, to stay free of charge.. and we are finding that international airports are very accomodating for this... so after a stressful and hectic day in Santiago where we bought Xmas pressies for each other, and watched ... read more

Rapa Nui, Rapa Nui! That's how the song goes that is playing constantly on this cool little island in the middle of the Pacific. The song is playing in the airport when you land and get off the plane onto the tarmac and people are waiting to put flowers around your neck, it's playing in your taxi, it's playing in the restaurant, in the hotel...it's a good song, really, and catchy...yeah, really catchy. Anyways, we had an awesome time here, starting with appropriating a room, it was easy enough, as there are booths of all the hotels and hostels right next to the baggage claim, and whichever place you pick out gives you a ride, also. First of all, the place we stayed, Cabanas Vaianny was great, we had our own bathroom and breakfast, and we ... read more

Well, it´s been short but very sweet. We´re leaving Easter Island this evening and we´ve had a fab time here. The island is amazing, although the weather´s been a bit rubbish. We´ve climbed a volcano (and stood inside the crater - wow!), been to the beach, seen more Moai (big heads) than we can count and taken hundreds of photos... We´ve stayed in a really nice guest house, eaten good food, and made new friends in Rachel and Steve, who are 3 months into their round the world trip and who stayed in the same guest house. We hired a jeep with them and toured the island on Friday, it was a great day. I´ll put photos here when I manage to get them off my camera, it´ll be at least a week till I can ... read more

We travelled back in time like Marty McFly, leaving Auckland at 5pm on Monday and arriving on Easter Island at 10am the same day. Of course, we werent going back in time to save the world or anything. We were hit by the heat and humidity as soon as we got off the plane. A change from NZ, but probably nothing like the changes in weather we'll experience in the coming year. First stop was the YHA to put up our tent, then the necessary trip into town to get some money to pay for everything. Only the could we start looking for what we had come to see. Only we didnt see any Moai for a bit. We went past Ana Kai Tangata, a cavern at the foot of some cliffs with some old and ... read more
