What a couple of days, we hired a quad bike yesterday to get aroung the Island (easily done in a day). We went to all of the sites you´ll have seen on National Geographic channel and some other smaller ones, we´ve taken over 200 photo´s between us and realised that SPF8 is not quite enough for a "tropical island paradise". The first night here hit our pockets hard as Argentina is half the price for all items and the food is far better, drinks here are around the same price as London and sometimes more. None of that has detracted from the amazing sight of "museum" pieces standing on the ground in front of you (and the two of us being the only people at a site). Today was spent walking for miles as unfortunately our ... read more

Well so much has hàppened since we last wrote, we´ve left Mendoza (nice place but it felt a tad rundown and the dust was something to behold). I did enjoy thier take on the humble Ice cream Sundae though. A dodgy coach trip over the Andes on the worlds bumpiest road with some stunning views of snow-capped peaks and change of coach at the border as the first one had run out of steam and smelt like it was cooking it´s internal wiring. Into Santiago for an overnight in a hostel in the BOHEMIAN area of the city where the homeless (and not homeless) use the pavement as a toilet, ATMs that won´t take my card and then an early start out to Rapa Nui. We arrived here at Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and were greeted ... read more

The flights to Ester Island were knackering, almost 24 hours Cuzco to Lima (7hrs wait), Lima to Santiago (2 hrs wait) then 6 hr flight here, but well worth it, it is lovely here. It is really chilled out and relaxed. We are staying in a little bungalow by the sea with kitchen, dining room and on suite bathroom, so have managed to cook an evening meal with sparse goods from the many supermarkets and can cook breakfasts and lunches!! We have been eating out 3 times a day for 6 weeks, nice to have a change! We have lots of cats and dogs that vist our little veranda! Yesterday was our first full day here, we hired a jeep and visited all the Moais (statues) and ahus (alters). All very impressive and nice to see ... read more

A short lesson of history Once upon a time, far away from everywhere, there existed a beautiful, beautiful island with green hills and lots of trees on it. Then came the people and made their home here and life was good. Food was abundant and they could even afford to allocate a significant amount of their resources towards the erection of gigantic stone statues which would symbolize their wealth and power. But the way of life had its price and resources were limited on the beautiful but small island. One after the other the trees were felled until one day there were hardly any left. This upset the settlers and war broke out. Opposed clans tore down the stone statues which their ancestors had erected to break the spirit and power of their enemies until one ... read more

How do you make a holiday encompassing many things you've always wanted to do yet never expected to do even better...? Do another one! Persuaded by the author of the Footprints Chile book that we really shouldn't miss out on it, and that a good offer could be found at Lan Chile, we decided to go for it and head back across 4000km of Pacific Ocean to Easter Island (Isla de Pascua as the Chileans know it). I hadn't even realised it was Chilean territory until recently. As a place to visit, this is a pretty remote one...the nearest neighbour is the Pitcairn Islands at some 2000km away...how the Polynesian or European explorers ever found the place (never mind made their way back home again) is beyond my comprehension. Ever since I was a child, I'd ... read more

An early rise to catch the cheap Centropuerto bus to the airport and we were on our way to the very middle of the Pacific Ocean. Save for a spectacular view of chile's fog enveloped mountains, the flight was entirely over water so a fairly uneventful 5 hours. It was still funny to see our computer generated flight plan crop up on our personal TV screens showing a lonely little aeroplane on a big blue screen. As the plane eventually began its descent, we caught our first glimpse of the green rolling hills of Easter Island and then another even better glimpse as the pilot made an arse of the landing and had to circle again for a second attempt! At the tiny airport we strolled off the plane and towards the small terminal building where ... read more

So, I hired a jeep with an Irish/Korean couple at the campsite, and we went off round the Island; Saw the Moai Quarry. Apparantly the heads are just the tops of full Moai buried by a Tsunami in the 60's. Saw the famous 15 Moai, which were spectacular. Saw the place where the birdman cult competition took place. Got told off by a park ranger for driving our jeep somewhere vehicles weren't allowed. Should've known the fact there was actually a roadsign for once was an indication it wasn't really a road.... Also met some Yanks teaching English here for 6 months. Think that would drive me crazy. We went to the beach a couple times, and drank ourselves into oblivion one night. Which was fun. In Tahiti now. Pics may have to wait til NZ, ... read more

Well, I made it here!! And it´s pretty spectacular. It was quite windy yesterday, and as the huge waves battered the coast, it really felt as if I was thousands of miles from anything. Which I am. The rock heads I´ve seen so far are every bit as impressive and absurd as expected too. Apparantly people arrived here about 800AD. How?!! About 700 years before some guy who thought the world was round found the world´s current favourite troublemakers, some other equally crazy people travelled even further to find a bit of rock. And not even the stuff from the seaside that you can eat, either. Why?!! Ah well, they did. And now so did I. Except I fly, and the captain knew where it was. Luckily. Not so luckily, the weather turned awful over night. ... read more

Dad took me to one of the most isolated places in the world (Once again, what the heck was he thinking!) It was a 5 hour flight from Santiago, and it is half way between Santiago and Tahiti! It was an outdoor museum and I loved running around the giant statues (Moais). The statues were fascinating and my dad even bought a wooden one that was bigger than me to take home. We hired a taxi driver and took 2 full day tours around the island to the best sights, instead of going on a tour. He even broght his son on one of the days, so I had someone to play with who was just a little older than me. We took a picnic each day and ate outside by these giant Moais. I dont ... read more

Journal No. 44 4/22/06 About 15 days ago we were in French Polynesia. We first stayed in Papeete, Tahiti and it was very boring. The hotel had no cooling system and I didnt get any sleep. The next day we took a ferry to the island, Moorea. When we got our bags off, they were covered with fish guts. We took a bus to a hotel on the water and stayed there for 6 days. All I did was kayak and do school work. I would kayak to the Sheraton Hotel to eat or do internet. We left our hotel and went camping on another part of the island. There I went snorkeling and had a traditional polynesian dinner with poi, pig, fruit and fish. We returned to Papeete during the Easter Festival and watched polynesian ... read more
