Welcome to our blog! This was to keep family and friends up to date with where we were and what we were going as we travelled in 2004/2005. Sadly our travels are now over and we're both firmly entrenched in the rat race once more... but saving hard to fund our next trip :-)

Well..... after 36 000 miles, seven countries, and 357 days, here we are, back where we started. We arrived home on Thursday morning, after a long and boring 12 hour flight from Bangkok and a 1 hour shuttle from London to Glasgow. As promised my parents and Graeme's dad (his mum had to work unfortunately) were there to meet us and glad to have us home (for the first few days at least!!). After a few days at home we've caught up on sleep, eaten some great home cooking, looked in horror at the years worth of mail that has accummulated... and it's great to be back. I'm sure the itchy feet will start again soon, but it will be a wee while before we can afford another such oddyssey. In the mean time we are ... read more

Last Friday we flew from Phuket to Bangkok, the last stop on our round the world voyage. We braved Air Asia (one of Asia's budget airlines) once again - it was fine apart from the unallocated seating, so it felt like getting on a bus as people scrambled for the best seats... We had a busy old time in Bangkok visiting temples and night markets. The city is home to lots and lots of Buddhist temples, the best of which are near the river and within easy walking distance of each other. First up was Wat Pho - famous for it's enormous reclining Buddha (or lazy Buddha as one Thai tour guide put it). Wat Pho was pretty spectacular - the temple buildings ornate with jewels and intricate murals, and the most fantastic statues guarding the ... read more

We've just had a great holiday from our holiday in Phuket, Thailand. We decided that we needed some sun and relaxation at the end of our travels, and Phuket certainly provided that. We stayed at Kata Beach, which is south of the notorious Patong Beach (the main tourist and party area) on Phuket, in a lovely hotel called the Peach Hill Hotel (incase you want to go!) which had 3 pools, two with swim-up bars, and a view of the sea - bliss! We had a couple of very lazy days to start with - swimming in the pool, lunching at the pool bar, reading our books by the pool... it was too hot and humid to do much else. Mark had also been travelling north to Phuket and decided to try out the hotel we ... read more

After Singapore Malaysia is the obvious place to travel to, but with limited time we decided to just go to Kuala Lumpur. Getting to KL from Singapore is easy - you can take the bus or the train and it's only a few hours. We opted for the train and discovered that Britain is about the only country left in the world where train stations are still in city centres. Singapore's train station is on the outskirts of the city centre and is decidedly faded - a remnant of colonial times, it even had a waiting room for VIPS - how many VIPS travel by rain these days?! The express train turned out to be anything but express, it crawled through the countryside, but it was comfortable and inexpensive. As we got into Malaysia the visibility ... read more

Hello! We've had a great week since the last blog. We flew to Perth in a wee plane that reminded me of Jimbo (a cartoon from when I was wee) - it was small, round and noisy, and had to stop to refuel half way to Perth cos it wasn't big enough to get the whole way on one tank of petrol... We stayed in Fremantle, a town about 18k out of Perth, rather than Perth city, as we were a bit bored of bit cities. Fremantle turned out to be a good choice - a bohemian sea side town with lots of old buildings, good pubs and excellent fish and chips. Highlights were going to an Aussie Rules footie game (very weird sport - 22 on a team, a round field, and 4 25 minute ... read more

We're just back from a fantastic 3 days in the outback visiting Australia's most iconic attraction - Uluru, or Ayres Rock as it's commonly known, as well as the Olgas and King's Canyon, and experiencing a bit of outback life, and it was great! We started from Alice Springs very early on Monday morning, as Uluru is a 5 hour drive from Alice. Our first afternoon was spent doing the base walk around the rock; the local Aboriginal tribes discourage people from climbing it as it's a sacred site to them, but plenty of people still do the climb. We decided not to partly out of respect for the locals, and partly because it's bloody steep and we weren't sure that we were feeling that energetic! The base walk was enough exercise for the first day! ... read more

Melbourne turned out to be our break from travelling - we rented a studio apartment and spent a lot of time watching dodgy Australian TV and generally chilling out. We didn't manage to anything very touristy there - we went to the Immigration Museum which was over-run with small children so we didn't stay long, and to the Aussie Rules footie museum, which turned out to be mostly for local fanatics of the game and didn't have anything about the history of the game or how it's played... we didn't stay long there either... One good thing we did in Melbourne was meet up with Graeme's friend Mark, a kiwi who played rugby at Irvine a few years back. It was great to see him and his girlfriend Chris and we spent a couple of evenings ... read more

Our whistle-stop tour of Australia has thankfully slowed in pace a little and we're currently chilling out in Melbourne. Here's an update since the last blog: After the magical sailing in the Whitsundays we were meant to be getting an overnight bus to Hervey Bay, but the thought of getting on a bus after 2 nights on a boat, with no shower and covered in salt from all the snorkelling was too much, and we postponed our bus trip to the next day and found accommodation in Airlie Beach for one last night. This also meant that we were able to join the rest of our group from the boat for a few drinks that evening, before everyone went their separate ways. The next morning Graeme, Jamie and I caught a bus to Hervey Bay for ... read more

Me again! We're just back from our sailing trip in the Whitsundays - the room is still rocking from the boat, we have washed off the dirt and salt and inspected the bruises, and concluded that we had an absolutely fantastic time. We sailed on a 75 foot maxi racing yacht - it sailed the Sydney to Hobart yacht race several times and won, but it's not big enough for round-the-world type racing. There were 19 of us on board, plus 4 crew, which was few enough to learn people's names and feel like we were a small group. We spent two days cruising the Whitsundays - stopping to snorkel on parts of the Great Barrier Reef (again!), to laze on the stunning Whithaven Beach (consistently voted in the top 10 beaches in the world), dangling ... read more

Hello all! Just a quick update as we're waiting for a bus to collect us for our 2 day sailing trip to the Whitsunday Islands. Last time I wrote we were in Canberra; from there we flew to Cairns to begin our 2 1/2 week trip down the Queensland coast to Brisbane. We didn't spend much time in Cairns, we used it as a base to visit Cape Tribulation (a gorgeous area of beach and rainforest about 3 hours north of Cairns) and to visit the Great Barrier Reef. We spent a day on the reef last Friday - it was AMAZING! We snorkelled with all sorts of sea creatures, including a couple of sea turtles and a sea cucumber. The sun was out and the ocean was warm, it was bliss! After Cairns we travelled ... read more
