We left New Zealand last Monday with a bit of sadness, but looking forward to exploring a new place. Sydney was a total culture shock after 9 months in NZ - it was like being in London, people rushing, very busy, nobody smiling... On the plus side it has an excellent public transport service and one of the most beautiful settings in the world. We were meeting my friend Jamie in Sydney - I worked with her at summer camp a few years ago and she's in Australia on holiday. She flew in from Boston and we met at our hostel. The pace picked up in Sydney and we felt like proper tourists again - we visited the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, Taronga Zoo (where we had our photos taken with Koala bears - ... read more

Well, the time has finally come for us to write our last blog from New Zealand and prepare to head to Australia. This time tomorrow we'll be in the air, winging our way to pastures new. We're excited about moving on, but sad about leaving NZ. First, I'll bring you up to date with the last week. After our snowboarding extravaganza we left Queenstown to go back to Dunedin for the Lions vs Otago game. In Dunedin we took in the Speights Brewery and the Cadbury factory, sampling plenty of beer and chocolate respectively. We joined the thousands of other rugby fans in the Octagon bars drinking before and after the game, and enjoyed the atmosphere at Carisbrooke stadium. The game itself wasn't great, but there were some choice moments from other supporters. One was on ... read more

At the end of the last blog I said there was too much to put into one, so here's the second part: We left Invercargill on Friday morning and spent the day driving through the Catlins, the south-east corner of the south island. The Catlins are a pretty coastal area with lots of nice bays and beaches, even beaches where you can swim with dolphins in the surf - typically only in summer though. The Catlins were nice to drive through, but there wasn't much to do - some of the 'towns' we drove through didn't even have a corner shop in them... We decided to head for Dunedin, a week early since we have to be back there for the Lions vs Otago game this weekend, but I had a cunning plan for all that ... read more

Hello! After Queenstown we drove a couple hours south to Te Anau, a lovely wee town on the edge of Fiordland, NZ's biggest national park and home to lots of wild forest, spectacular mountains and beautiful fiords. Te Anau is the base for walking some of NZ's 'great walks', including the 4 day Milford Track, but they aren't so much fun in winter (due to ice, snow, torrential rain, the Department of Conservation removing some of the bridges during winter - small details!) so we used it as a base to visit the world famous Milford Sound. Milford Sound is a spectacular fiord (carved by glaciers) that leads out to the Tasman Sea and is reached by a very windy, twisty (and icy at this time of year) mountain road. We opted to go by bus ... read more

Hi all! Just a wee update to let you know that we're OK and still having a great time in NZ. We left the glaciers last week and drove further south to Wanaka, a lovely holiday town on the shores of Lake Wanaka (of course!) and surrounded by snow-capped hills. Wanaka was by far the coldest place we've been by far, which wasn't helped by the lack of central heating in our otherwise great backpackers. They did have spare blankets I'm happy to say! We spent most of our time in Wanaka chilling out (in both senses of the word!), except for spending one morning at the fantastic Puzzling World, a one man creation of weird illusions and the most fantastic maze. We spent a happy hour trying to complete the maze, which meant finding the ... read more

Wet is for all the rain that we've seen on the West Coast, for the fantastically choppy Tasman Sea, and for the temperate rainforest that surrounds us here. Wild is for some of the weather we've seen, for the rugged scenery and for the day we had glacier hiking yesterday - fantastic. And the west coast of NZ is where we are now. We drove from Nelson over two days, mostly in rainy and overcast weather, through scenery which was stunning when the low cloud broke enough to be able to see it - high mountains, rolling waves, a road which hugged first the Buller river valley then the coastline. We broke the journed in a place called Punakaiki, where we stayed in the most interesting hostel yet - a place called Te Nikau Retreat, which ... read more

Hello again! We've had a fantastic week since the last blog and have added another 1000k and a lot of mud onto the car... We left Kaikoura last Sunday and drove through fog and drizzle into the hills to Hanmer Springs. Hanmer is another of the places in NZ where there is a 'hot spot' below ground and they have hot springs that rise to the surface - hence Hanmer has grown as a thermal resort. It's a gorgeous wee Apline village - we were planning on staying one night but liked it so much we stayed two. The hostel in Hanmer was lovely, very friendly and with excellent staff, which is always a bonus. Our first afternoon was spent strolling in the Hanmer forest (more gorgeous autumn colours!), and in the evening we took advantage ... read more

Hello! It's been a week since we've had a travelblog, so bear with me - there's lots to tell. We left Napier on Monday morning in pouring rain - so heavy that we considered stopping till it eased off, but then it eased off and we drove across very dull flat countryside in very dull grey weather. We stopped in the (dull, grey) town of Palmerston North for lunch - very uninspiring town so we didn't stay long. We were heading to Wanganui to visit my friend Margaret, who I worked with at Auckland City Council (in fact, it was her job I was doing as she was seconded to another post), but she left ACC the week after me to relocate to Wanganui. They moved into their new house 3 days before we visited (we ... read more

Hello again! Well this being on the road sure beats working... We've had the most glorious week weather-wise and driving around NZ has been a real pleasure. One of the nice things about NZ is that the scenery is gorgeous (and we know that it gets better on the South Island), and outside of Auckland the roads are reasonably quiet, so we are able to meander about the country looking at nice views, enjoying the weather and generally taking our time about getting places. We left the Coromandel on Thursday and had a long day's driving to Rotorua. This was just a stop-over as we were aiming for Napier but it was too far for a day's drive. The drive from the Coromandel was typically stunning, along the coast for most of the way and through ... read more

Monday We finally left Auckland at about 2.30 on Monday, having spent the morning packing, tidying Kenny and Luke's house, doing laundry etc. We managed to miss the afternoon rush hour by about 30 minutes (phew!) and headed for the Coromandel. It only took about an hour and a half to get to our first destination - Thames, the main town in the Coromandel. It was getting to the end of the afternoon so we decided to spend the night in Thames rather than drive up the windy twisty road to Coromandel town in the dark. We booked into a backpackers (didn't fancy pitching the tent in the dark either...), which was very comfy but odd because we were the only ones there. On the bright side we had the kitchen to ourselves and cooked our ... read more
