Sarah G went off to work for the morning and we had planned to go to Hanmer Springs in the afternoon/evening as a girly treat for my bday 9th May!! How exciting indeed! We managed to book a hostel in Hanmer for the night and Nikki rang and booked a half hour massage at the spa...yeah baby!! First taste of South America Arriving at the little airport at Easter Island we were soon donning floral garlands and shepherded into a minivan with 2 French girls and another Brit with his surf board. We felt instantly welcomed into the Ana Rapu guesthouse and then a little deserted by the host who we then did not see for a few days. We had 5 days to see the sights of Easter Island, plenty of time for a bit of relaxation as well. Hanga Roa There is only one town on Easter Island, Hanga Roa, where the 4,000 inhabitants and their many dogs and horses live (along with millions of nocturnal cockroaches - are they always nocturnal?). Its quite a small town with a few tourist shops and cafes and only some of the roads ... read more

So its a over month since I wrote my last blog. I've been meaning to write a new entry since I got back from Easter Island but never seemed to have enough time... Its now less than two weeks before I go home, so its likely that this could be my last blog for this trip. Anyway what has happened in the last month. Well, after leaving La Serena, I went to Santiago. I was there for the Easter Weekend, mainly because I was flying from there to Easter Island on the following Tuesday. This is perhaps the only decision I regretted. The newspapers suggested that most lots of residents had gone away for the weekend and they were right, there was hardly anyone around and all the shops were closed. To make things worse ... read more

Easter Island, Santiago and Sydney We left Lima on our flight to Easter Island via Santiago. The flights were pretty uneventful and i was glad to see land when we arrived. The airport was very small and the weather was really good, so the place had a real tropical feel to it. We went to the main campsite on the Island and set up our tents. The campsite over looked the sea and we had the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks to send us to sleep each night. The afternoon we rented bikes from the town and i went off on my own, after losing the others, and visited some of the nearby sites around the town. The main site was a set of 4 heads right next to the beach in the ... read more

Lake Indoon Day 1—Day 3 23-2-2007 to 25-2-2007 Spent a few days camped up at Lake Indoon near Eneabba / Leeman. Water was low and a bit on the nose unfortunately—not surpising really given it’s the end of summer. We were visited by bees at our camp one morning once they smelt the fresh water we used for washing up and we were inundated with the little critters . Although being crawled over by bees I tipped out what little fresh water we had in our washing up bucket and then we left for the morning to visit the Stockyard Gully caves. We hoped the bees would be gone once we returned else we would be requiring the services of one of the local beekeepers! The caves were a nice and cool retreat on a pretty ... read more

Summary in English: We spent 6 days at Rapa Nui, Easter Island, to explore the Moai statues, the beach and the beautiful crater lakes, also used for the construction of the statues. We had a nice time here, rented bikes for three days and made one dive. More info on Easter Island: look at our Chile Total entry.

Our final two stops before New Zealand took us to the islands of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and Moorea (just off Tahiti). After thinking it would never happen to us, we got upgraded to business class on the first leg of the journey! Much excitement ensued as we were presented with delightful meals on white bone china crockery, and lots of fun buttons to press which moved the seat backs to near-horizontal. The flight passed swiftly and we slipped from our ridiculously large seats and walked into the matchbox airport in Hanga Roa, Rapa Nui's one and only town (village in truth). The island is home to just 3000 people and is most well known for the mysterious Moai heads which can be found all over the place. There were two tribes about 1000 years ago ... read more

A beautiful blue sky greeted us this morning when we got up for the start of an epic hike around the perimeter of the island. We had considered joining a tour but without a bagful of cash to pay for it, we opted to try and see some of the sights ourselves on foot. We set off along the shoreline and made our way past the five Maoi we met yesterday wondering if we might hook up with Gomez, our stray dog friend, again. Just as we approached the five Maoi, the skies turned dark and we were hit by a sudden heavy rain shower. We had been warned about how quickly the weather can change here so thankfully we were armed with umbrellas and raincoats and didn't get too drenched. When the clouds cleared, the ... read more

Tervehdys Paasiaissaarelta. Tultiin tanne pari paivaa sitten hieman vasyneina pitkasta lentorupeamasta. Eka paivana kerettiin tekemaan pieni kavelylenkki ja kaymaan kaupassa ennen aikaista sankyynmenoa. Seuraavana paivana aloitettiin sitten jo saareen tutustuminen. Meikalainen paatyi siina sitten tekemaan oikein kunnollisen saarikierroksen, kun tapasin pari samassa paikassa majoittuvaa tsekkia, jotka houkuttelivat mukaansa sanoen, etta oltiin tavatessamme jo puolimatkassa. No melkein ainakin oltiin.
