Today, I elected to take an orientation tour around Easter Island, which was fabulous. It was great to have a guide explaining the sights and she was excellent in making sure I understood what was being said. The group was pretty small at 10 tourists and two guides. We split into two smaller groups of 5 at each site. The tour kicked off at Vinapu, very close to the airport for a single Moai, then we moved along the east coast, to Vaihu and Akahanga, both sites had Moai to admire, both unrestored. One had fallen. afterwards, we moved to the "Moai Nursery", Rano Raraku, the quarry where the Moai were created before being moved to their Ahu. Here, it is stunning - Moai everywhere in all sorts of readiness for moving to their eventual destination. ... read more

It is strange feeling, after travelling 2500 miles over nothing but the sea. Absolutely nothing below the plane except blue, both ground and air. 5 and a half hours later of nothingness, a tiny speck of volcanic rock appears. The Boeing descends so low over the sea I was warming up my arms for swimming. Luckily, the pilot was a more confident person than I and we landed on solid surface, a bare 5 metres from the sea. Welcome to Hanga Roa. The airport is nothing more than a tin shack with two rooms - arrivals and departures. A bare few minutes after the plane emptied, the staff were already herding on the return party and the plane was being readied for departure. I, on the other hand was a proud owner of a flowery garland. ... read more

Easter Island Imagine a town of 4,000 people situated where Winnipeg is and its closest neighbours were in St John's Newfoundland and Victoria, BC. That's about the way it is in Hanga Roa, the town of Easter Island. Imagine ... a town more remote than Winnipeg! ... just a joke. The Island´s nearest neighbours are mainland Chile and Tahiti, each a 5 hour flight away. The island is directly south of Salt Lake City, Utah and forms one apex of the triangle in the Pacific which marks the Polynesian Islands. Fortunately I thought about going to the Easter Islands before I reached Santiago. The airline prices are more reasonable the further in advance that you book. One British fellow at the place I stayed booked the day before and paid $800. I paid $400 by ... read more

Spending three days by myself on the island was quite a bit of fun, but I was really looking forward to seeing my friends today as I haven't seen them for over a month. These are my friends Alejandro and Linnea whom I lived in the same building with in La Paz, Bolivia for the time I was living there as well. When they heard that I found such a cheap flight to Easter Island, they decided that they would take vacation and join me out there :) Alejandro, at least, had planned on visiting the island after his contract was finished but with the seat-sale on, it was the right time to go. Before the arrival of Linnea and Alejandro, I had my own room at the hostel but I gave it up for ... read more

Well one day back in early April, I decided to take a peek at the LAN Chile website (www.lan.com) to get a ballpark figure how much it would cost me to go to Easter Island while traveling around South America. Easter Island is somewhere that I have always wanted to go, but the cost of the flight sets most travelers back around $800. I searched for flights at the beginning of when I had planned to head back to South America, and the price that I could back was absolutely amazing... $350 round trip for a week on Easter Island. I immediately went to the Air Canada website, where I had been many times before in the past month, reserved a ticket to fly from Ottawa to Santiago, then went back to the LAN website ... read more

Well, I have to admit, I've done it again. I thought that I had a flight to leave Easter Island on Sunday, but when I got to the airport I discovered that that was not the case. Somehow I made it to the island without having an exit ticket and although my intended flight was on my itinerary I never paid for it (you can imagine my conversation at the airport check-in). But I actually had no problem with this and was quite happy to have an excuse to stay for a few more days. I feel quite at home here and wasn't ready to leave just yet. So here I am. I've already gone horseback riding again, which I have to say was quite the experience. For starters, I split my jeans (one of ... read more

Easter Island..... there is so much I want to say, but just can't describe (my English is getting rusty, but really this place is hard to put to words). So you must rely on my photos and what little else I can offer. This island is an enchanting and mystical place. I spent my first morning watching the sunrise over a row of moai (the large statues) which was spectacular in spite of being briefly interrupted by a rain storm (which seemed to just add to the mysticism). I then drove all over the island with a rental car (surprise, there are cars here) seeing the sights and hiking volcanoes (dormant but still spectacular). The one volcano, Ranu Raraku, was the birth place of the moai and all over are abandoned statues that were carved ... read more

The Legends According to legend, the origin of the people of Rapa nui goes back to Marae Renga, an island that probably formed part of the Marquesas Archipeligo. It is believed that Ariki Hotu Matu’a was defeated in war by his brother and was forced to search for a new home across the Pacific Ocean. Matu’a sent 7 warriors in search for this new homeland and when they finally found it they named it “Te Pito o Te Henua” literally, The Naval of the world. Now in naming this island they weren’t far off the mark at all. In fact Easter Island, as it is now commonly known, is in fact the most isolated, populated Island in the world. 2520 miles away from Tahiti and 2300 miles away from Chile. In effect, 5 hours flying ... read more
