We were able to amend our trip to give ourselves a full day and two nights in Santiago, Chile....what a wonderful and safe city. After seeing Santiago we are for sure planning a trip back to Chile to travel through more of this amazing country. Santiago lays in the shadow of the beautiful Andes mountains, and every part of the city we visitied was wonderful. These two days allowed us to catch our breath and relax before we headed out to Easter Island. We plan on returning to see more of mainland Chile. Now after I gave the glowing review let me tell you the #%$% drawbacks....first, Chile is angry with the USA governemnt for charging a very high fee to acquire a travel visa for residents of their country. So who pays for that frustration? ... read more

We arrived on the mysterious Easter island full of excitement to finally be here after watching so many TV programmes over the years about it. The island is about the most isolated place you can go in the world, it is in the Pacific, 4000 Km from Chile´s mainland and 2000 Km from the other nearest island, the Pitcairn island (population 40). On Easter Island there is not a big population either, only about 5000 people in total and most of the people live in the main town of Hanga Roa. The town is small with only a few shops and a single supermarket which was only open a few hours a day, and hardly ever had any food in it. The day a delivery truck turned up, half the local population turned up too! Luckily, ... read more

This is fascinating stuff. Really. Truly. Believe us. It is. Here we are (or he we were - by the time some of you read this). Easter Island, Rapa Nui, Isla de Pacques, Isla de Pascua ... even Eastern Island if you believe the car hire company. What a bloody marvellous place (first swear word - within the first 100 words). 2000 km from Pitcairn Island (the next place of population), 4100km from Tahiti and 3700 km to Chile. This is the most isolated, inhabited island in the world. The history thing first. Are you sitting comfortably? Then we´ll begin (Codo/Vicks sit on your hands or something). King Hotu Matua turned up to this place - from the west - in between 400 and 1200 AD. Already you can see that things are a little sketchy. ... read more

We flew through the night from Tahiti to Easter Island and were greeted by some very thorough passport checks as we formally entered Chile (about the only security they do have) and received flower necklaces from our host. By chance we had arrived in time to catch the last few days of the annual Tapati Rapa Nui (Easter Island Festival). That afternoon, after a loooong wait we watched the parade (the 4 o´clock parade in true Polynesian style started at 7). It comprised various floats and lots of singing and dancing by the very scantily clad locals covered in mud. Having retired to our room after having only 2 hours sleep in the past 36 hours we were delighted to discover the chickens which like most Polynesian animals wander and fornicate at their leisure. These little ... read more

Siellä moai-patsaat ... read more

He olivat vuokranneet pyorat ja vuokrasin minakin. PS: Saaren kartta loytyy vaikka tuolta: http://berclo.net/page02/02es-pascua.html Pyorailin klo 12 - 18. Lahdin ensin rantatieta pohjoista kohti. Koko paiva menikin matkustaessa. Olin liiankin hyvissa ajoin La Serenan lentokentalla, jo tuntia ennen kuin LAN avasi tiskinsa. Lento myohastyi lopulta kaksi tuntia, joten tyydyin pysyttelemaan Santiagon lentokentalla. Lento meni ihan leppoisasti: viinia sai lisaa ja pystyi pelaamaan edessa olevalla naytolla pasiansseja tai katsomaan leffoja. Laskeutuminen oli kokemus. Kone lensi ensin kylan yli, kaarsi meren paalla ja tuli lahella vedenpintaa takaisin kentalle.... read more

We had booked our flights to Easter Island before coming out to South America 6 months ago. However, we only really had a chance to think about the things we were going to see as we sat on our 5 hour flight from Santiago looking down at the endless sea below us. It is fair to say that Easter Island exceeded my expectations - I knew it was going to be good, I just didn´t realise it would be this good. Stuck in the Pacific Ocean, thousands of kilometres from the nearest inhabited islands (the Pitcairns) and even further from mainland Chile, Easter Island is described as one of the most remote inhabited places on earth. Despite this, it receives thousands of tourists every year and the majority of its inhabitants work in the tourist industry. ... read more

The most remote island? Located almost 4000 km from mainland Chile, and well over 2000 km from the nearest inhabited land (Pitcairn Islands), Easter Island has a fair claim to being the world's most remote place. Remote it may be but isolated it is not, as daily LAN Chile flights from Santiago and Tahiti, not to mention the huge numbers of tourists that visit, mean you never feel the solitude that the earliest inhabitants of the islands must surely have felt. Indeed, until 1968 the island was visited only once a year by a ship from Chile which brought supplies, something of a contrast to nowadays! In spite of these crowds it's easy to escape and find quieter spots where you can still feel some of the island's remoteness. It was with some excitement that we ... read more
