Banaue to Batad English/ tips for travelers: really worthwile to do a two day hike in this region. the rice terraces are beautifully located! nice view from the hotels on the fields. You can do it by yourself but we met people that got lost during the part of walking through the terraces. If you take the night bus from manilla, take your sleeping bag, it's really cold! KYOTO! summary in english/ traveler's tips: Kyoto, so much to see and do... we had to make choices. The first day we visited Arashiyama in the morning, by bike (which we would'nt want to have missed for its beautiful setting in the countryside) and some temples further from the city, Kinkaku-ji (Golden temple, another not-to-be-missed) and Ginkaku-ji. Shirahama english summary: we had enough of the cities so fo us to enjoy Kyoto later on, we needed to go to the beach for one day.. ; ) There's some diving in Shirahama, but we were too late so we just cycled along the coast and stayed on the beach. The region is famous for its onsen, but they are all seperated male-female. On the way back to Kyoto we stopped at Wakayama castle. Nara Nara is, like Kumamoto, another city from where the emperor once ruled the country and therefore was the capital of japan. so another bunch of temples. you can visit the city on foot or hire a bike. Vanochtend twijfelen we nog altijd over hoe we onze laatste dagen JR railpass gaan besteden. Vandaag dan eerst maar Nara bezoeken en ondertussen wat informatie inwinnen over andere plaatsen. Meiyajima ofzoiets The shrine of Miyajima is 'selected' by the japanese as one of the three most scenic places of japan. well, then we had to see this... Many tourists but nice view (only with high tide, otherwise quite muddy). 30 minutes from hiroshima central station. 's Middags zijn we naar een klein eilandje bij Hiroshima geweest: Meyiama. De shrine in het water is het meest gefotografeerde ding van japan. Het is een mooi groen eilandje met een aantal tempels en dus de fameuze shrine in het water (en bij eb in de modder). Kumamoto: castle and garden The castle of Kumamoto is really worthwile visiting. beautifully located, nice garden and exposition. We also visited the Suizen-ji garden. From Kumamoto you get real easy and quick to Mount aso (from other places the buses and trains have real bad connections). Wanneer we laat in de avond aankomen in Kumamoto, worden we zeer gastvrij ontvangen door de gastheer van Minshuku Higoji ryokan. Kamakura, de hoofdstad van Japan in de 12e en 13e eeuw De bekendste tempelstad in Japan is Nikko, maar Kamakura, ook een oude hoofdstad van Japan, is mooi gelegen in de heuvels en dat geeft mooie plaatjes. Ook leuk om te wandelen in de bergen en de kleine tempeltjes onderweg te bezoeken.
