Sydney by Night
A view of harbor from the bridge, with the Opera House and City. Easter Island, Santiago and Sydney We left Lima on our flight to Easter Island via Santiago. The flights were pretty uneventful and i was glad to see land when we arrived. The airport was very small and the weather was really good, so the place had a real tropical feel to it. We went to the main campsite on the Island and set up our tents. The campsite over looked the sea and we had the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks to send us to sleep each night. The afternoon we rented bikes from the town and i went off on my own, after losing the others, and visited some of the nearby sites around the town. The main site was a set of 4 heads right next to the beach in the center of town. You will see many pictures of these heads but it is hard to explain how amazing and incredible they are in person. They tower above you in a magical and mysterious way, like they watched what has gone by and know the truth about the past of the island.
The second day we set out on a cycle ride across to the other side
Easter Island Heads
The gang chillin with some heads. of the island to visit some more sites. It was a long journey with a lot up hill but when we reached the other side we realised it was worth it. We walked across the beach to a group of perfectly kept heads that even still had their red hats on. From there me and Mathew went for a little dip in the sea and when we got out Max was pushing his bike towards us not looking to happy. His tire had a puncture and so we had a little bit of a problem being 30 km from camp! Matt, the hero he is, said that he would push the bike back without visiting the sites. Dan Max and myself continued on our way, visiting the largest collection of heads on the island, over 10, and then continuing up a large hill into the ancient quarry. This was very exciting as lots of the heads had been abandoned there, in different stages of construction. It was really good exploring the different parts of the quarry as we found some finished heads in there alcoves ready to be pushed down the mountain. As we continued to cycle back we caught
Big Head
The largest head on the island, half finished in the quarry. up with Matt who had been walking for like 4 hours and was only just over half way! He realised he wasnt going to make it before sunset so we waited for him to get a lift back into town and we slowly followed on the bikes.
On our final day on the island we went up a volcano that was in one corner of the island. It had a lake in the middle and had good views over the sea and the rest of the island. The rest of the day we spent relaxing and watching the sea. That evening, after our 3rd dinner in a row of pasta and tomato, we went to watch a film in the cinema, a room in a hotel! The one and only film they showed everyday was of course about the island and was a fictional version of its history and not to bad. We went our final night camping on the Island and the next day we were back on the plane, returning to Santiago.
We had very little time in Santiago, about 24 hours, and the first evening we just went out to get some dinner and then
Santiago
The main square in Santiago where Jesus is the original consumer! watched some TV. The next day we walked into town and looked round the main square with its large and impressive cathedral. We then continued further into town, where we visited the zoo! The zoo was placed on the side of a large hill in the center of town. We took a cable car to the top of the zoo and then walked down looking at all the animals. I hadnt been to a zoo for quite a while and Matthew was also getting very excited about. The most interesting animal was definitely the polar bear. We watched it being fed, as climbed around its cage looking for the food being thrown to it.
That evening we set off to the airport for our flight to Sydney and our departure from South America as a whole. It was a sad moment as it had been a wonderful place and place that i feel i could have spent a lot longer at. It was also sad because this is where we parted from Matthew for over 2 months. We said our good byes and headed of on our long flight to Oz.
We arrived in Sydney early in the
Sydney
Yet another fancy night pic of Sydney with a bit of the bridge in focus. morning but it took us a good couple of hours to get out the airport. We were first confronted by Quarintine, who detained and gave us a formal warning, lucky to not go to jail, for bringing mud on our boots and tent into the country! It was pretty harsh considering are boots were cleaner than most peoples shows who were entering the country. After that we went and had a fry up in a small cafe but from then it went a little down hill. I started to feel really ill so decided to look for a hotel. While looking men and Dan lost Max and once we had a room Dan couldnt find Max so decided to look round Sydney on his own while I slept. Max, 3 hours later, showed up at the hotel after sitting on the corner waiting for us. In the end when i felt a bit better in the evening we all went out together and looked round the harbor. The bridge and the opera house looked really amazing all lit up at night.
Early the next day we were back on a plane heading for Hong Kong. There we waited in
the airport for 7 hours for our connecting flight to Delhi and the next Leg of our trip...
