Ulisses' brother Augusto works for Pfizer and implied that he could score me some Viagra. I learned this as he drove us around Pampulha, a really nice lake area that features its own church called São Francisco de Assis, but unlike the one in Ouro Preto, it wasn't painted up by a cripple. And to cap off an afternoon of looking at pretty things, we noticed Playboy Magazine being sold in a supermarket at child-eye level, which led to a discussion about Brazil's refreshingly laid back approach to sex, which in turn led to a discussion about the USA's irritatingly uptight approach to sex, subsequently leading into the USA's confusingly laid back approach to violence. (Specifically, I referred to a story I'd heard about the South Park movie: When the filmmakers submitted it to the ratings ... read more

Well after the stress of class for a week I decided to get away from the city for a week of relaxation and first port of call was ´Cataratas del Iguazu´. Everyone I spoke to before leaving that had travelled here said that it was a must see and it was just that and more! The falls are made up of around 275 falls up to 82 metres high along 2.7 km. The water falls at between 300 to 6500 cubic metres per second over the big fall named Garganta del Diablo ( Devil´s Throat) which is 150m wide. Accounts for the huge noise which I am sure can be heard miles away. Legend has it - there is always a legend isn't there - that a god wanted to marry a beautiful aborigine named Naipu ... read more

English Trancoso There are places where, once you set your foot on, you feel like somebody has cast a spell on you. It has happened to us in Trancoso. It might have been the contrast with the hectic Rio, it might be due to the particular moment and the particular way we were feeling while we were there, it might be that if we come back we will not feel the same magic, but, somehow, in that place everything looked perfect. Far away from the civilization, back to the time where the rithm in the human lives was given by the light of the sun... it is incredible to think that only 18 hours by bus, a small boat ride and another hour by bus were enough to reach Trancoso from Rio. Usually paradise is said ... read more

Some backstory: On the flight from Atlanta to Rio de Janeiro, we encountered a friendly Brazilian man named Plinio. We didn't say much to him, other than we were visiting Rio (which should have been at least a little obvious given our plane was scheduled to land there), but before too long he had invited us to a birthday barbecue at his house that Friday. We called him Friday and told him we were on our way, but if you read this blog, you'll know that we didn't go to his barbecue. We went out taunting fully armed military officers that night. Some more backstory: Yesterday as we were departing Lavras Novas on our way to Belo Horizonte, we stumbled onto a couple of tourists walking into town. They were almost as obvious as we were, ... read more

Salvador and All That Jazz Ok peeps. It is that time again. I have finally sort of managed to catch up on my blogging. So after the 11 hour bus ride which was not that bad actually, we finally got to Salvador. Was not sure where exactly to stay. There are two main districts for accomodation. Pelorinho and Barra. I stayed in the historical center which is basically Pelorinho. My first impression of Salvador is that it is really laid back and people sure love to dance. The first night we got there the local school was playing in the streets advertising their music which was percussion. The beat is really catchy and next thing you know there are dozens of people following the band around the streets and dancing behind them. It was quite fun. ... read more

Six days of staying in a hostel finally caught up with me. I got sick and spent half my time here in Recife recovering. Thank God it wasn´t the food poisoning sick that happened to me several times in Chile, just a really bad cold. Olinda On my way out of Natal, I picked up two brochures for hostels in the Recife area. One was for a hostel in Olinda, the other for a hostel in Boa Viagem. Olinda is a historical city a couple kilometers north of the city center, and Boa Viagam is the nice beach area south of the city center. In part going on Luis Fernando´s schedule, which had me doing a tour of Olinda the first day, I decided to go to the hostel in Olinda. I dropped my bags off, ... read more

We are now very close to Salvador, staying on an Island Ilha de Itaparica at a place called Sacatar in a town called Itaparica. To get here from the airport after our 2 hour flight we got on a bus and stayed on there for a VERY scenic trip into Salvador which took at least an hour and a half, went down a VERY cool elevator (Elevador Lacerda) that has at least a 100m drop that leads onto the point where we caught a wooden boat for about 45 mins across the waters to the Island.. from there we jumped into a combi van (the local budget taxi service) to the town of Itaparica which again was at least another hour before arriving at our final destination. We were met by Mitch and Taylor who are ... read more

hoo wee what a day. i've never had such a headache from trying to talk to people. we started the day out in the tiny little mountain town of lavras novas (if it isn't already up, there will be more about this town, erm, yesterday). the town is nearly deserted, it seems. even the people who live here don't seem to live here. and i'd call it a one-horse town, except there are a lot of horses. and chickens roaming the town square. and the local dogs seem to have taken a liking to me as though i'm the freakin pied piper. the other problem, incidentally, is that either i'm retarded *or* the accent here is very hard to understand. i mean REALLY hard. also, i keep asking people to repeat what they're saying more slowly, ... read more

We were, in fact, the only two guests left in the Albergue de Juventude Brumas Hostel. Breakfast, eerily, was for us and only us. And as of noon, there was nobody left there, and the employees were finally free to walk around naked without offending anybody. Before hopping the bus to Lavras Novas (about which I'll go into further detail below), we decided to check out one last church in Ouro Preto. Saõ Francisco de Assis has people buried in its floor. Saõ Francisco de Assis is covered in paintings and sculptures of cartoon characters. I can't explain the part about the people buried in the floor, but the cartoons are easy: The artist, Antonio Francisco Lisboa (1738-1814), became known as Aleijadinho, which translates to "Little Cripple." Due to a disease which might've been leprosy or ... read more

On the bus ride from Ouro Preto to the gold mines I saw a sign for "Funny Night Club." I'll have to check that out on my next time through. The tour guide at 315 meters below the earth's surface told us we were welcome to swim in the water before us. We were barely able to catch all the Portuguese he was throwing at us (and by "us" of course I mean "Eden who actually knows some Portuguese and not really me at all"), but when he said something about "arsenic," we politely declined. A classroom of young Brazilian girls (and by "young" of course I mean "really young, and not young in the way that they are anywhere near old enough") immediately pegged us as American tourists and, giddy, they stampeded toward us here ... read more
