About a million things happened since I last posted to this blog, so I’m just going to race through everything. Though a bout of shingles (otherwise known as adult chicken pox) threatened to ruin my Carnival celebrations, I recovered just enough to be able to enjoy myself, and not to have to worry about scaring people away with my open sores. Sounds grosser than it was, but believe me, it was far from a comfortable experience. Anyway, Carnival was everything I thought it would be, although up in Olinda it is a much different Carnival than in Rio de Janeiro. In Rio, there are samba schools, and people wear those elaborate costumes you’ve probably seen on TV (or maybe in person!). But in Olinda, the celebrations are characterized by groups of Maracatu (a type of Brazilian ... read more

So we flew into Recife from Manaus even though it was quite a detour considering we had about 4 stopovers before we finally came to our destination. Recife seemed to be very modern with a lot of condos built around the beach area called Boa Viagem. The beach was not bad but one thing that seemed to be missing in there was the action. There was no bars or restaurants like one would usually picture. I got checked into a hotel and well me and Wayne, the australian pretty much just lazed around the beach trying to get burned by the sun everyday. We visited the old part of town in Recife. Walked around a bit but did not see anything that would totally amaze me. After a couple of days of being useless, we decided ... read more

South America » Brazil » Minas Gerais » Ouro Preto April 4th 2006

this morning we arrived in ouro preto via an extremely misleading bus. see, when i got on the bus at 11pm last night from rio, i thought heeeeeey this looks like a really comfortable bus, which is awesome, because it's an overnight bus ride. it had pull-out, la-z-boy style footrests and everything. but oh man. i don't know why but it was so uncomfortable. we both barely slept. anyway, we stumble down this huge hill to a hostel and manage, in our half-asleep stupors, to ask for a room. the man was so very nice and he showed us to this room with a BEAUTIFUL view of ouro preto (roughly translated as "land of 1000 churches". or was that "black gold"?) in what i imagine to be an angelic fashion, he tells us to rest before ... read more

I've made it to BRAZIL!!!..... After a sad departure from London I made it into Rio de Janeiro and to a hostel by the name of Stone of a Beach, located a couple streets back from Copacabana. I had a few days to settle into the land of sunshine and skimpy bottomed bathing suits before being joined by a fellow seasoned traveller by the name of Owen. I met Owen about 7 months ago at the Okay guesthouse in Phnom Penh and then again for the celebrations that the Full Moon Party (where he initally made an appearance on the blogsite) had to offer with myself and Kym. Having Brazil on my ''2005/2006 world tour'' and the same interests of travelling a good portion of the Brazilian coastline and a little of what the Amazon offers ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio Grande do Norte April 3rd 2006

Natal begins my two week tour of the Northeast. The northeast is reputed to have some of the best beaches in the world. It is also one of the poorest areas of Brazil, so I had been warned that things will be very different from the more developed south. Natal Natal is a state capital on the north eastern coast of Brazil of about 800,000 or so people. I arrived in Natal about 2:00 in the afternoon. The hostel I was going to stay at was called "Lua Cheia" ("Full Moon") and I was told by the Uruguayan girl who was at the same hostel as me in Belo Horizonte that it was "cool." I agree. The hostel looks like a castle, complete with a moat and lookout towers. It has a huge bar attached to ... read more

Sometimes, when I'm learning Portuguese, I sing to myself "Learning Portuguese I think I'm learning Portuguese I really think so..." If you think that's dorky, sometimes when I'm adjusting my Start Menu settings I sing "Lock the Taskbar" to the tune of "Rock the Casbah." Things are good. More later. kyle t.... read more

South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus April 3rd 2006

Having left the gorgeous Brasil coast, we headed inland to Belem, to get the ferry down the Amazon to Manaus. Strictly speaking, we weren´t actually on the Amazon for the first part of the journey - we got to it via a tributary (the Rio Mar), which led us around the biggest island sitting in the mouth of the Amazon, Ilha do Marajo - an island which is bigger than Switzerland! A couple on the tour had bought a map of the Amazonia region and every so often would take it up to the captain to find out where we were on the route - this was when we discovered that the captain had never seen a map of the Amazon before! I guess he just knows it by sight - which is very impressive when ... read more

i think it's about time to talk about teresa. see...kyle and i signed up at this website called global freeloaders. basically, this webiste has a database of people willing to offer a couch or a bed for travelers, and in exchange, you sign up to do the same. it's a pretty awesome way to meet people of that country. this is how we found teresa. in our first email exchange, teresa informed me that she was hesitant to host us because she had hosted some smelly rude americans in the past. i assured her we smelled good. then she said (upon asking for our birthdates) that kyle and i are nearing the end of our first saturn cycles and that perhaps we could have a nice chat about this? uh-oh. ;) well, i'll be honest, at ... read more

South America » Brazil » Pantanal April 2nd 2006

23rd March 06 - 29th March 06 Hooked up with James from N. Yorks for the journey across the border into Brazil and up into the Pantanal. This is an area of swampland the size of france with more biodiversity than the Amazon and, aparrently, not that well known. Apart from James, I only met one other traveller that had heard of the region before I got there! Ignorant Gringos! There are over 950 species of birds and over 80 species of mamals. All around you, whether you´re walking, on a jeep or boat safari or from the back of a horse (yes, on a horse, me!), wildlife is outstandingly abundant. We stayed in a camp one night where you sleep in a hammock inside mosquito nets, swaying into the land of nod backed by a jungle ... read more
