The only flight I could book from Salvador to Rio De Janerio was at 3am! it didn't leave on time this was the start of a bad day. We that's Luke, Mike and myself next found ourselves on a Rio street corner at 9am the address of the hostel in the Lonely Planet was wrong. Eventually made it to the right address but then had to wait for our beds to be ready, no probs.......6pm still no beds! we got shuffled off to a sister hostel in Copacabana which wasn't very nice, but given free booze for all the hassle so a happy ending really! We stayed at the Che Lagarto hostel in Ipanema, one of Rio's nicer areas and only two minutes walk from the beach! Rio life revolves around the beach which was quite ... read more

by tim After six and a half weeks we finally arrived in Rio. Nine Dragoman/Encounter trucks carrying 120 people had descended from all over South America on the Hotel Paysandu. Our first night there was the Red and Black ball. This we had been pre-warned was an event which saw several thousand people dressed in Red and Black converge on a nightclub called the Scala club. The point of it was fairly obscure apart from the fact that the woman generally got mauled by the local bloke's. I was'nt really looking forward to it but it was just one of those things we felt we had to do. The first few hours were as expected, my worst nightmare. The place was packed with blokes just out for a cheap thrill. Caroline and Precious, dressed in minimilistic ... read more

I went at evening to a football game in the Maracana stadium. It's one of the biggest football stadiums in the world. When it was first built, it contained 200,000 places, but there was a problem with it's foundation so they added chairs, which lowered it's capacity by half. Unfortunately the stadium goes threw a renovation, so the lower floor is closed and the stadium contains only 55,000 seats now. The game we went to was a minor one - it was in the middle of the week, Flamengo is one of the best teams in Brazil and Madureira team is considered a week one, and the win of Flamengo was a sure thing - So the stadium wasn't full, and there were only :-) 40,000 fans there, unfortunately all of the Flamengo team (Madureira is ... read more

Hola (Still the same in portugese) From that you can gather that i made it to Rio. It only took 25 hours on a bus that must have been suspected for havin dodgy people with dodgy substances due to the amount of police stops and bag checks on the way to Rio. No surprise to me due to the look of some of the local passengers. But that doesn’t do them justice, true they where a strange bunch due to watching the weirdest dvds so far on the bus a mix of strange concerts/club nights and kids films. But in broken Spanish they were telling me they were looking forward to the Rolling Stones. Got to rio and decided to pick the most disorganised hostel i could find, fortunately located in Copacabana, so it was really ... read more

I'm having a few problems getting photos uploaded to this blog, technology is letting me down, so I'm going to publish it with the few photos I've got up and hopefully will add some more once technology improves so check back in a couple of days and keep your fingers crossed. Rio was fun, great fun, hard work all that partying, but we definitely "did" Rio in the week we were there. Here it is in pictures: The Red and Black Ball Originally a fund raiser for one of the Rio football teams, now just an excuse to get dressed up (in black and red), party and generally have a good time. Kicks off around 11 at night and we were home and tucked up in bed by 5. Rio - The City Did some touristy ... read more

Like the title says...words cannot possibly describe what Rio is like during Carnaval. At first, I didn´t think much of Rio...just as another city with a beach. The city is overwhelming with its contrasts and the people. The first thing that I did was meet up with Hassan at his place. Next day we got our keys and the whole gang met up. Oggie, John and Hassan are the partners in crime here. The next day we went to the travel agency to get ripped off like every freaking GRINGO should. When I talked to the locals, i found out that we paid at least double for the Carnaval tickets along with a bunch of other things. But how fun is that if you don´t get raped with the prices? So the first thing we did ... read more

Today is officially as far as I know based on all the religious stuff, the last day of Carnival, and also the last stat holiday here so Mukuda will finally stop complaining about his laundry woes. First off I want to apologize for the lack of Carnival pictures, Blair was our photographer because his camera is much smaller than mine and we actually have several CD's full of the various Carnival activities we have engaged in over the last several days. I have a few pics I will post but the good ones will have to wait until later. We did much partying on the streets of Lapa, beaches and streets of Ipanema, and of course in downtown where the spectacular Samba parade took place. Now the samba parade is really quite something, they erected this ... read more

Aaaahhhh.......... dunno whether we´re getting paranoid or wat? But we met with a little incident again today. We were walking along the familiar way to the subway station when a shabby looking black woman suddenly pounce onto OSM, trying to beg for money we guess. But in tt split second and us being very sensitive oredi, she hit her hand that was holding on to a bottle of vodka and the vodka was splashed all over her. Not knowing what to do, we screamed and ran, our faces turned white and limbs turned jelly. In fact, now that we think back, hmmm... dunno who scared who? Maybe all she wanted was only to beg... but too bad, she met with these paranoid asians who not only didn´t give her any money, but in turn broke her ... read more

I took a flight from Salvador to Rio, as I was planning to see the winners parade there. I booked a hostel called King George, which is run by Israelies, and there were recomendations for it in the Lametayel site. I have no pictures of this hostel, but let me tell ya' that the conditions I had in 'Tironut' were better. There was no free room in other hostels for the next day, so I treated myself with a hotel, spent the next day searching for a hostel, and found a great one! It's called Che Lagarto, located in an Ipanema region, and costed a little more than King George. Before that, when I first landed in Rio from Israel, and now after comming from Salvador I spent my time in the Copacabana region, which is ... read more
