After the traumatic journey to Rio, with countless layovers and a slight losing of my way in Houston airport leading to passing through security twice... I finally arrived in Copacabana beach in Rio. The Mellow Yellow hostel is fantastic, 5 floors of fun (the stairs are a killer) with loads of great people. The first night had a pub quiz, which my team (all Brits, Katy, Rachel and Terry the hostel owner) did not do to well at, the highest score was less than 20 out of 40 though, followed by a search for a salsa club which ended quickly when we found a gay club with a Cher act. What more could you want after 24 hours of travelling?? Day 2 was sight seeing, the views from Sugar Loaf are amazing, this is a really ... read more

We received our bags, and things started to improve. I decided to leave that apartment and spoiled myself with a 4 star hotel, and I even had a private Jacuzzi in my room! I think that it was my best experience until that moment. We also went to see the Corcobado, which is a statue of Jesus that oversees the entire city, and the view (although cloudy) was amazing from over there! I discovered that the language barrel is a serious one, as almost no one knows English or even Spanish in Brazil. The next day I was to fly to Salvador, and I had real problems making a hostel reservation by phone - It was really funny - I knew how to ask for a room, but I couldn't understand the response, so it was ... read more

So Brazil. Turns out the Spanish and the Portuguese dreamt up some line of longitude to separate their New World empires. Then they discovered Brazil. Or something like that. Long and short of that is they don't even bother speaking Spanish here. Well that's no bloody good, is it?! Anyways, four months of lazily travelling far too slowly meant so far I'd cut short my stay in Costa Rica from three weeks to two days, scrubbed around Panama altogether and put Cuba off until later. So far so good. Flying into Sao Paulo late January was a bit of a shock really. My biggest problems were assuming I'd be fine with Spanish - which I guess now is getting pretty OK - and not having a guidebook. English language books in Rio are surprisingly thin on ... read more

Ilha Grande is a quiet Island just off the South Coast of Rio. It is covered with Atlantic rainforest, has only two cars (ambulance and police car) and has loads of quiet clean beaches which can only be accessed by boat or long walks. The first day was spent getting famliliar with our surroundings and catching up with things. The intention was to update the blog, unfortunately internet access on the island was that slow it seemed to be via WAP, so we gave it up as a bad job. The night was spent with an Irish couple (Sarsha and Peter), a Curitiban couple (Phillipe and Marsha) and a couple who were at university in Rio (Isabella and Fred). We drank Cachaça, vodka and guarana and talked about the corruption in Brazil, their love of football ... read more

As we (especially Ran, my flight partner) wanted to 'lizrom' and make as little plans as possible, we did a reservation only for the first night. What we didn´t know, was that on the following day there was going to be a free concert by the Rolling Stones in Rio, so all the hostels / hotels / pausads were overbooked. After some time we finally managed to find a really lousy apartment, and the owner made us pay for 2 nights. We rented it with a couple of israeli girls, and Tom from England, who has been traveling for 2 years. The best thing that I can tell about the appartmnet is the interesting stories Tom has told me. At evening we tried our luck and went to the concert. Besides us, 1.2 million people also ... read more

The start of my trip was really left footed. Why was it left footed, you ask? Well, for starters we had a really great flight: Our plane from Tel Aviv to Madrid was late by an hour, so we had 15 minutes to catch our connection to Rio De Janeiro. When we came running to the terminal, we discovered that our plane to Rio was going to be late by another one and a half hours. Then when we finally had landed in Rio, we went to take our baggage, but of course, it hadn't arrived. Apparently the Iberia people has decided that it ought to rest some time in Tel Aviv... There was a really long line to declare our lost baggage in the airport, as they lost the baggage of half of the airplane ... read more

So what do you do when the entire island you´re staying on has a power cut?? 3 steps to island darkness: 1) Light rain 2) Torrential downpour 3) Lights out, air conditioning off and no TV! Apparently it happens quite often, so some of the restaurants have their own generators, the rest just take the night off! The next day, we scourd the town looking for lunch. Apparently the only food on the island that doesn´t need electricity is burgers! Fresh fruit juices and sandwiches are a no-go! The next 20 hours were spent travelling by boat, van, bus and taxi to Curitiba. There´s not much here except a cheap internet cafe in the shopping centre, but the best thing it has to offer is the break in an otherwise 30 hour journey to Iguassu Falls. ... read more

pulsating samba beats, expansive white beaches crowded with sun tanned bodies, and impressive and scenic landscapes filling in the backdrop....this is daily life in rio de janeiro. i wasn't quite sure what to expect upon arrival in rio. i had decided to go for one week, traveling to and from buenos aires. definitely not enough time to do justice to the expansive country of brazil, but it seemed a shame to skip brazil completely...especially with its infamous reputation for fun living, exorbitant nightlife, and unparalleled dance and music origins. i stayed in a cute little hostel, called ipanema beach house, nestled into a quiet street in the posh barrio of ipanema. as many are compelled to sing "and she's go-ing to san-fran-cis-co....la la la.." when i tell them where i am from; ipanema may be one ... read more

So we made it to our second stop, Ilha grande after a bus and ferry ride. Found our little pousada and dropped our backpacks and had much needed cigarettes and alcohol! Those backpacks are seriously heavy! Due to Jem´s disability we decided to just spend a few days soaking up the sun on a few of the island gorgeous wee beaches. However this proved more difficult as it was a mission to get to any beaches - climbing over rocks etc so Jems feet really didn´t get the rest they needed. However the beaches, when we finally got there were really nice and never too busy. Our second night we decided we needed to let our hair down and so went to a little bar at the port - note to travellers the drinks are pretty ... read more
