Now feeling confident that the whole of Brazil believes we are Brazilian, and considering that we accidently stumbled into a favela in Salvador, we dared to venture into Rocinha, the largest favela in Brazil. For those of you who have seen City Of God, you can forgive us for expecting to be ducking stray bullets, but in actual fact, the favela by day was incredibly quiet, and the people were extremely friendly and the kids were happily playing and flying their kites. We were struck by the poverty within the area, the children were subconsciously running around barefoot amongst the sewage water, that leéks through the favelas narrow streets and staircases. While some of the children begged, many others were selling pieces of art and jewellery that they had made as a means of gathering money. ... read more

The moment we stepped off the plane we knew we felt at home. We glided through the airport with no complications and when we arrived at the hostel we were greeted with a lively atmosphere, with the whole hostel preparing to enjoy their Saturday night! Buoyed by the atmosphere (and the hostel's caipirinha bar) we immediately got ourselves ready for our first night out in Rio. We all (approx a group of 10 to 15) headed to Lapa - filled with bars and clubs. For 2 Reais (approx 50p) we got into a cool hip hop club, and if you didnt fancy paying the entrance fee, you could always join the hundreds of revellers outside who were enjoying the music for free and dancing on the streets! Partying aside, while in Rio we have been eager ... read more

Rio has been an awesome place to spend time, and you could easily spend a lot longer there (Mehalah spent 2 months and needs more time). There is a massive variety of things to do and the people are very friendly. It is hard to grasp quite how big rio is, it follows the coast for miles and miles, sorounded by by mountains and lush forests. This means that pretty much where ever you are you are not far from an amazing sandy beach, backed by cycle paths and beach sellers. These beaches are pretty amazing especialy considering the fact that you are in a city the size of london. True to its reputation rio is full of fantastically beautifull people - wearing very little. Sadly we were not able to fully enjoy these beaches as ... read more

I never thought I would be so excited about landing in an airport. Rio is the first place I´ve been in a while, where I didn't have to follow the normal route (cash machine, tourist office, transit sort, accommodation sort, food needs...) as I was met by my Aunt Jojo and Uncle Peter. We were accompanied by my newly adopted gran Pene, who sensibly left the grey skies of England for the joys of Brazil. We were then whisked a couple of hours north of Rio to Buzios and met up with my cousins Ross and Blaise. It´s a holiday for all of us, as life in New Jersey for the boys and Jojo is quite a contrast to Brazil. So the holiday from travelling begins... The first stop was to the house of Hilary, a ... read more

Well, I seem to end up in a place for a few days, sometimes a few weeks, but eventually it is time to move on. I booked a bus ticket this morning. The bus will take me to Porto Alegre tomorrow. From there I will jump on a bus to Montevideo and spend a few days in the Uraguay Capital, before getting a boat accross the bay to Buenos Aries. I have a flight booked out of Buenos for a weeks time, bound for Ushuaia in Torre De Fuego. I have spent about 10 days in Rio de Janeiro. I spent New Years on Copacabana Beach, I went to stay with Camilla's family in Nitaroi. All in all I had a fun time. The weather here has, this morning, turned sunny (it is always hot in ... read more

Happy New Year, everyone! We arrived in Rio de Janeiro, the second biggest city in Brazil after a couple hours of layover in São Paulo (another crazy town) several days ago. Unfortunately we didn't see any Rio landmark our first night due to our late arrival. We went directly to our hostel in Botafogo neighborhood, which located only twenty minutes walking from Copacabana and Ipanema beach, sitting next to the Corcovado with the Cristo Redentor statue on top. Eating fruits in Botafogo, visiting favela (Rio's famous slums), riding cable car to the top of the Sugarloaf Mountain, swimming at Ipanema beach and getting mugged at Capacabana beach are some of minor things we experience during our first day in Rio. Getting mugged? That's right, but story will follow later. First day in Rio: don't be a ... read more

Friday 30th December 2005 What a fantastic day! If only I could put up my pictures right now!! Even though they wouldn´t come close to doing it justice, still no words would be necessary! I went up to see the big man, JC, on top of his rocky outcrop. I don´t have a sufficiently flowery vocabulary to desribe effectively how absolutely stunningly spectacular the views are from up there. There is a heaven, and if you come to Rio, it´s real easy to find, just look up, and do whatever it takes to get there. It really is something every single person should get to see. Amazing. Later, a massive group of us went down to the beach to play some football. Well, we abondoned that after a couple of minutes. It was too hot anyway, ... read more

Thursday 29th December 2005 So... the boat party. I have to say we were all a little disappointed. We left really late for starters. And then the boat was full of gringos. Drunk gringos by the end of things. We could´ve been in Ibiza or something. Oh, and it just went to 1 beach in the end, and the water was absolutely filthy. But the location was spectacular so we made the most of it. Oh, and on the gringos note, I seem to have found myself in a hostel where everyone has a similar dislike for the traditional English tourist! In the evening we decided to go to a club called Zero Zero. Apparently it´s where all the beautiful people go (and in this city, that´s quite a claim!). A Brazilian girl Paul knows claimed ... read more
