Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

We made to our final destination of the year in Rio. We canīt believe how quickly the year has gone! Next week we will be back in our flat and back to īnormal'life... Rio is a real 24 hour city. The weather has been pathcy but we have manged to catch the main sites without rain, although by the time we got a train up to Christ the Redeemer it was pretty cloudy! It is an amzing site though, not just close up but it seems likeits visible from anywhere in the city. The views from Sugar Loaf are amazing and [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone, well we got here to Rio safe and havenīt had any trouble since we got here, none of the horror stories we heard or read about have come true thankfully. We are having a fab time and have just spent three nights here and are leaving for Ilha Grande this morning. Rio is actually a really beautiful place and the people friendly and helpful. There is a huge language barrier when in shops and places, even the bus station and airport, very few Brazilians had enough English to point us in the right direction, although we are not quite [View Full Entry]

So long Steaks..... Before we left Buenos Aires for the last time we thought we should invest in one final Steak dinner. We found a great restaurant near to Florida Street in the city centre, it was very touristy and our very friendly waiter even showed us his "meat". After the initial shock of the incident it only added to the experience. Once before I have been able to pick a fish from a tank before sending it to the Kitchen, actually picking the Cow is quite a revelation. So we said farewell to the BA which has been so good [View Full Entry]

Rio is a city of contrasts. From the amazing beaches to the uninhabitable black rock mountain peaks that quickly rise out of the ocean to form a striking addition to the skyline. From the wealth of Ipanema and Leblon to the abject poverty of the favelas (shanty towns) numbering some 500 neighborhoods ranging from tent and cardboard cities to cinder block and tin roof buildings, riddled with crime and hopelessness. In these areas, families are given free water, electricity and rent along with 300 Reais (about $150) a month to live. Luckily, I didnīt venture into any of the favelas, stayin [View Full Entry]

After a long day of flying from Manaus to Sao Paulo, we finally arrived in Rio just before dusk. Our cabbi was very energetic and friendly and gave us what i'm sure was a brilliant navigation as we drove through the city, unfortunatly as it was all in portugese, we only understood a word here and there but he was quite entertaining none the less. That night we stayed at a Hostel Called the Mango Tree, which was an amazing location just a few blocks from Inpanema, we went out to a restaurant around the corner for dinner and had our [View Full Entry]

.... Laura now taking over... Ok so where were we, drunk i think.... ah yes! The evening of afore mentioned episode we got chatting so this American Journalist who informed us we could take the tram through Santa Theresa.... meaning we get awesome views of the Christ de Redemer statue + sugarloaf + a favela so we make plans to do this the next day! So there next day we marvel at our ability to actually get somewhere on public transport.... and the place to actually be intentional.... language barrier really rather substantial and the old phrase book is getting alot [View Full Entry]

Rio Highlights Rio is a fantastic city, probably one of the best ones I have ever been to so far. But, there is one catch! Out of the six days I spent there, I never once felt totally safe. Itīs an awful pity that itīs like that. I still reckon, Sydney is the best city I have been to. I was staying in Ipanema, one block from the beach at Posto 9, apparently a famous spot in Rio. The beach is fantastic and the views all around are amazing. I took a tour with the hostel to various places around Rio. [View Full Entry]

Welcome to South America! We left London on Friday night and arrived in Rio 17 hours later. We managed to get through customs with no worries and then struck our first problem for the trip - getting cash out! Out of 7 ATMs, HSBC swallowed one card, which had to be pulled out of the machine with a pair of tweezers, whilst the others didnt recognise maestro or Visa and none had English instructions.... great! We had just about given up when one of the machines came through with the goods. The airport is on the north side quite far from [View Full Entry]

Donīt mind the date on the photos. Need to get new camera. It kept on displaying same date on all photos Maracana Stadium Local teams play in Semi Final. Flamengo v Fluminese Result 1 - 0 to Flamengo. Brazil as far as I know won the World Cup here when they hosted it. It seats over 100,000 people. There was a game where Brazil were in the final and the stadium held a massive 200,000 people. Itīs no longer allowed nowadays. This football match was the highlight of Rio for me. The atmosphere was electric. I never experienced anything like ever [View Full Entry]

10 days in and weīre having a blast. Seen all the sights including sugar loaf mt, the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the Maracana football stadium, hippie markets, Copacabana and Ipanema beach, Parque Nacional de Tijuca (hardcore do you want more jungle!!). I had to put my northface jacket on throughout the whole jungle hike in soaring heat and humidity as was terrified of any form of creepie crawly coming near me - sweated buckets! Having said that Neil almost jumped out of his skin when a leaf landed on his head!! Saw some crazy monkey things, and some marmosets but [View Full Entry]
