We just wrapped up Day 6 here at the Olympics and it's hard to believe just how quickly it is going by! We were very excited to get to head to to mini-Marcana Stadium (actually named Ginasio do Maracanazinho). This is one of a few permanent venues that was in place prior to the Games. It also happens to be the closest venue to our apartment, meaning our shortest day on transit so far - amazing! Today was special because it was the first time we were going to be able to cheer on a full Canadian Team. We've cheered on Canadian individual athletes and our doubles teams in Tennis, but today was the first full team we have watched. Before we get to that though, we arrived to an absolutely packed Gym (we'll call it ... read more

Day 7 here in Rio has come to an end and we've been going flat out all day! Many hours spent on transit crisscrossing the greater Rio area in order to cheer on our Canadian athletes and some Brazilians too. The City of Rio and the Organizing Committee are doing a incredible job moving tens of thousands of people hourly, hundreds of thousands daily on the transit system around the City. Trains, buses and subways connect seamlessly, run on time and the transit staff have been superb. A truly massive effort and achievement by everyone involved. Having said that, it is super later and we are back at it again tomorrow so the blog might be a bit shorter than usual tonight (we've said that before and it ends up being super long). We got our ... read more

Another day is over here at the Olympics in Rio with day #4 in the books. We were up earlier this morning and headed back to Olympic Park. We didn't have a chance yesterday to mention it, but Rio has done a fantastic job with their brand-new subway line (Line #4) connecting the southeast coast and beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema with the southwest coast of the the city (the Barra region). What's interesting is that right now the new line is only used for those traveling with the Rio Olympic Transit Pass as well as a ticket to an event that day. No locals have had the opportunity to use this new subway line yet. The stations are absolutely beautiful, completely finished, bright, modern and spacious. This will be a major legacy for the people ... read more

Day #5 proved to be 'one of those days' where we dealt with a few unlucky situations and then tried to make the best of them! We were due to be at the Olympic Rowing Stadium at Lagoa Bay bright and early this morning at 8:30am. To get to that venue, we needed to be up and out of the apartment by 7:30am. Apparently, setting an alarm on very little sleeps means sometimes the result is a lot of sleep. We woke up at exactly 11:38am this morning! If you're doing the quick math, this means we missed rowing by...a lot of hours. We weren't due to get to Olympic Park tonight until 10:30pm to watch Men's Basketball China vs. Venezuela. Both of us love the Olympics, love watching events...but those two teams are ranked last ... read more

Day 2 here at the Olympics was a full day of Women's Basketball. We woke up early in order to travel to the Deodoro cluster of Olympic sites. Part of the Rio Organizing Committee's strategy was to spread the Olympic sites out around Rio. The Deodoro cluster is about an hour train ride northwest of the city centre. The cluster hosts all of equestrian events, handball, field hockey, shooting and women's basketball. There is a practice pool there too. The cluster itself actually is completely within a huge military base. Picture the Olympic venues sitting inside CFB Borden or CFB Garrison. To say that security was at a maximum at this location would be an understatement. We felt extremely safe, as we have during the entire trip so far. When you consider we have roughly 30,000 ... read more

A quick blog today at the end of Day 3. We will be back at the Olympic Park in the morning for Tennis all day on the 'side courts' -- not the main stadium, but courts 3 to 9. We just arrived back at the apartment and while our Men's Basketball game tonight ended around midnight, it is now just after 4:00am. For some reason the subway was not working this evening, so a parade of buses brought us back from Olympic Park to the Lapa area (normally about an hour on the subway). Needless to say we arrived back here wanting to get as much sleep as possible before we turn around and do it all again tomorrow morning. Having said that, it was our first trip into the Olympic Park and the Barra de ... read more

While they call it Day #1 of the Olympics even tough competition has been happening for a few days and the Opening Ceremonies were yesterday. It is the first full day of competition throughout the various venues here in Rio and it was also our first day with tickets to an event. The men's cycling road race this morning was a non-ticketed event which allowed tons of locals and visitors to take in the race at various points throughout the course without a ticket. We've been big fans for Italy's Vincenzo Nibali and we were disappointed when he crashed out on the final decent of the day! These guys rode their guts out for over 6 hours on one of the toughest Olympic courses ever, for over 230km, only to lose out on a medal a ... read more

Welcome to our Rio 2016 blog! We started this back in London and not only was it a great way to keep in touch with everyone back home, it has also been a great way to look back on our trip years later. Our plan is to create a blog for each day we are here during the Olympics which start today for us with the Men's Road Race (cycling) and then late night Beach Volleyball on the shores of Copacabana Beach. The trip here was a close to perfect as you could want. All of our flights were on time and surprisingly comfortable. Before leaving Toronto we had a chance to hang out in the Air Canada lounge with what seemed to be tons of Canadian Olympians. We saw our local team (Women's Basketball) as ... read more

Saudade Those 12 hrs went literally flying ( as we also were on the air), we slept probably 30 mins and watched movies the rest of the time. ( Worth saying, a huge compliment to KLM for being up to date with its film offer, one of the films we watched was "London has fallen" - how up to date is that ). The flight started a bit challenging lets say, as we turned around and saw on the row next to us not one but two small babies, twins actually, not that we mind babies, simply the sound levels can get pretty high at 10,000 feet when their little ears get blocked and they start screaming, these two little fellows did marvelously we must confess. The -oh please not this too- moment came together with ... read more

We are back in Rio for a day and a half after traveling almost 12 hours from the Pantanal. We are reminded of how beautiful is the setting for this city, with its magnificent beaches and the huge rock monoliths like Sugarloaf and the Corcovado surrounding. We are again staying at the Othon Hotel, which has a gorgeous view of Copacabana beach and a buffet breakfast. Highly recommended! After a quick pizza supper and a good sleep we headed out with our guide for an early morning walk to Ipanema, the next beach south of Copacabana. Because it was Sunday, the street was reserved for pedestrians and bikers. When we rounded the point that separates the two beaches we could see that the surf on Ipanema was even greater than that on Copacabana - perhaps 10-foot ... read more
