Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

After 2 nights in Ipanema, on Thursday I packed up and, as planned, shifted camp to Rio Hostel (imaginative name!) in Santa Teresa. I had heard it was slightly less safe here, so was a little wary, but have had no problems so far, and Santa Teresa is so beautiful it would be worth it. Lovely grand old buildings bedecked in greenery, crumbling and mildewing and flaking of paint. The other night I had dinner in a little square in the centre, in a bookshop that doubles as a cafe/pizzeria and has rooms for rent in the attic. There were parrots [View Full Entry]

everywhere you look in Rio he seems to be there
This three week trip to Brazil seemed like a better idea last winter, before we confronted the practical reality of such a diverse country, and tried to learn Portugese. We would start in Rio with the family of our AFS exchange student, who we had never met. We would share a wilderness experience, canoeing in either the Amazon or Pantanal areas. But after a cancelled international flight and two unexpected overnights in suburban Virginia and Sao Paulo, we were face to face with overwhelmingly friendly strangers who suggested we join them for a typical, though unseasonably cool and drizzly, Su [View Full Entry]

My first full day in Ipanema, in Rio, in Brazil, in the whole of South America, and day is turning into night. It is circa 7pm here, and I am sitting in the lobby of my hostel, where I have wireless internet, a power source, a bar, and the scent of dinner in the air. I arrived a little earlier than this yesterday, but was rather too tired to do much else but sleep. I have flown long haul before (to Indonesia), but this journey (London-Lisbon-Rio) seemed the more draining. Maybe it was the mad rush at Heathrow (my e-ticket had [View Full Entry]

Hey!!! Well I guess this will be my last blog as I´m going home on Friday...boooo!!! The last part of the South America trip has definately been the best! Brazil is officially my favourite country! Well the city tour in Montevideo wasn~t the best...in fact about 5 people out of our group managed to fall asleep on it!!! Its not the most exciting city! We went out in the evening though and had a pretty big night so I guess that made up for it! We went to a bar that had a live band playing salsa music so we all [View Full Entry]

Sad to leave the tranquility of Parati we hopped on yet another bus to head to Rio. The bus drove along the coast road so there were some pretty spectacular views, shame about the kid puking two rows behind! We arrived at Rio bus station, and after a brief domestic about whether we were on the right bus (we were!), we scrambled off to find ourselves in the world famous Copacabana district (cue much humming of the Barry Manilow classic). We had booked into a hostel that lauded itself as the best hostel in South America, as voted in the Telegraph. [View Full Entry]

Well we arrived in Rio feeling fresh, we had been lucky enough to score some business class seats, after we were told we had to sit apart for the flight as everyone else had booked in online, I suspected the check-in lady noticed Deb´s quivering lip, anyway after Deb mentioned that it was our honeymoon she said she would see what she could do. After a while Deb heard our names over the announcer and not much longer after that we were flat out horizontally enjoying the extra comforts. Flight was delayed but we didn´t mind as I tried most of [View Full Entry]

Politics/Econ Blog I have recently returned home from Brazil and would like to briefly summarize some facts that I learned about the world’s FIFTH largest country: 1. Brazil occupies nearly half of South America and is the fifth most populated nation 2. Was a colony of Portugal from 1500 until independence in 1822 3. Has five major climatic types [View Full Entry]

Next stop - after a very slack border crossing in which we didn't even have our bags checked - was back into Argentina. We got the bus to Salta for a couple of days relaxing and some slightly (for one person in particular, not mentioning any names) wild nights. After Renee had sobered up long enough to get on another bus, we had a 20 hour trip to Iguazu, where we met up with Rod. In Iguazu we encountered torrential rain, but the soaking we received was well worth it to see the spectacular Iguazu falls, the fifth largest waterfalls in [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Rio Di Janeiro, after another 22 hour coach journey from Puerto Iguaçu, tired, and sick of coach travel. Worse, I was starting to come down with a cold due to the high powered air conditioning on the Corte Del Norte coach. The penny pinching bar stewards didn’t even provide food for the journey. When I arrived at the coach station, the last thing I wanted to do was get on another bus to get to Ipanema, so I got a taxi instead. This was my first day in a new city without Dale, so it was time to test [View Full Entry]
