Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Oi! And that´s hello in Brasilian Portuguese, not me shouting at you with poor English! So we´re here in Brasil, the land of Samba, Caiprinhas, beautiful people who dont understand much english (at all) and.....expensive everything!! If there was one thing about coming to Brasil that Nat and i werent prepared for, it was how expenisve this place is and how hard it is to communicate with the locals for day to day things. First example...we arrive at Rio, its boiling, we get in a cab and rather confidently ask the driver, in our well practiced 4 days of Spanish from [View Full Entry]

Wow what a city Rio is :-))) although we've liked a lot of the other cities we've been to this is the first time since we left Buenos Aires that we're in a place with life, soul, buzz and action. For the first time on this trip we're having to move on before we'd really like to, but if we don't we won't make Patagonia - bummer but that's how it is. When we arrived from Ouro Preto in the early morning it was grey and drizzly and stayed that way for most of the day, it meant we couldn't do [View Full Entry]

Well, we made it. That´s surprising considering the trials it took to get here. I want to say thanks to Brad for taking me to Checker Auto Parts to get a new battery for my ´91 pick-up that was sitting void of life in the middle Fox street at 9 pm, 8 hours before I had to be on my way to the airport. After an hour and a half wrestling with the ol´SOB we got it started and I made it home. Jess and I made our morning flight after three hours of sleep. 24 hours of airport inflation [View Full Entry]

So we arrive in Rio after the 6 hour bus journey which wasn't bad at all...infact we drove through some wonderful scenery. At the bus station we went to get a taxi however one company refused to take us as we didn't have an address of where we needed to go, just a general area (Botafogo). Luckily another company understood English so we could explain we're heading to an area to find a hostel...didn't realise that would be problem. The driver was desperately trying to pursuede us against going there as it was more for locals and not many hostels around [View Full Entry]

I don't know why I got off the bus. I knew it was turning onto the street on which I am currently living, Rua das Laranjeiras (sounds like larangitis). My Portuguese is still pathetic, but with a little effort I could have mumbled through the words to confirm the bus' general direction. But I didn't ask for help, and instead stepped off and into a swarm of drenched Cariocas rushing home from their work day. Now, I too am drenched, trudging, squishing and sliding through the flood that was once a street, soaked to the bone, my umbrella a useless shield [View Full Entry]

After the 2 weeks in Florianopolis, a rather sleepy town, it was time to see the famouse places of Rio! I was looking forward to Ipanema, Copacabana, the Christ and many more. But first I stopped at Sao Paulo, as it would have been a 18 hours journey going direct to Rio. Sao Paulo was really just a stop over, it is an industrial city and not much to see. Also it was time to adjust to higher prices again, it seems nearly as expensive as in Switzerland! I just stayed for one night and wasn't too sad to leave the [View Full Entry]

Ilha Grande - Boat Trip

After 45 days of early starts on our tour, it was nice to have some longer lies and not have a strict timetable full of activities. On Sunday we went to the famous hippie market in Ipanema where Jen was in heaven and GG was bored! Heavy rain put a stop to Jen's fun and Gordon heaved a huge sigh of relief! The next day we went on a tour of a Rio favela! There are many favelas in Rio but Rochina is the only one reckoned to be safe enough to walk around. The British government travel advice says to [View Full Entry]

Well Its after 12 at night and I am getting a 27 hour bus in a few hours but thought I´d give a quick update of the last few days. Just after I wrote my last blog the guy who lent me his laptop turned out to be very friendly and he and his wife invited us to stay in their home in Rio before we got our bus to Salvador. I can now see why it is hard to leave Rio. We got the ferry back to Brazil with Danielle and Junior which was nice a calm. The car journey [View Full Entry]
