Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Woke up this morning feeling a bit groggy after the few drinks last night. I don’t think the shoe shine guy would have got away to easily this morning! We had our usual breakfast of bread rolls, cheese and fruit and then relaxed a little around the hostel. The longer you stay in these places the more homely they become and when you see new faces you welcome them and chat for awhile. I met a sound guy from Uruguay who told me that the Uruguayans look at the Irish and feel as that they are a similar sized nation surrounded [View Full Entry]

Adios Rio! We’ve now left Rio and we’re on the tropical Island of Ilha Grande(think Lost and you’re there - it’s amazing) but we’ll tell you about that in another blog - there’s lots more to update you on from Rio. If we had to sum Rio up in 5 words -, HOT, EXPENSIVE, COOL, THONGS and SKETCHY.I leave sketchy till last as this is probably the one we’ll remember Rio for being!! After I last wrote we went to the Maracana (girls this is the biggest football stadium in Brazil and holds 100k people). Not much to say about this [View Full Entry]

So the story goes….. I had to leave the hostel in search of a working ATM. The HSBC one around the corner was only giving out two’s and five’s and since in needed about 1000 Brazilian reals, getting them in those denominations was not going to work. Off I soldiered through Ipanema for an ATM and ended up having to walk very far to get one. I didn’t mind that much as it was a wonderful morning and it wasn’t too hot. On the way back to the hostel as I passed under some tree’s I had the misfortune of a [View Full Entry]

The Maracana is set to host the 2014 world cup final and what a stadium it is. It currently holds 90,000 people but holds the world record of nearly 200,000 for the world cup final between Brazil and Uruguay in 19??. Last night saw the match between Flamengo and Cabrofrinese take place. The attendance for this match was only about 25,000 but the noise and atmosphere created by the home fans was amazing. We were picked up from our hostel at about 4pm after only been dropped backed from our previous tour a few minutes earlier. A Danish couple and an [View Full Entry]

RIO!!!!! Everything was beautiful, streets smell of weed - and other stuff, chilled, not enough time during the day, and quiet at night (in the dodgy streets and in most of the bars and clubs mid-week) Best stuff included...... - Sugar Loaf Mountain....great views of the city at sunset with an amazing red sky. Could have stayed there all night - Watching the Brazilian league footie final in the Maracana stadium (Botafogo V Resende). The football wasn't great but the fans and atmosphere were amazing! - Taking the bonde (cute little old yellow tram) up through Santa Teresa - through s [View Full Entry]

Ok so we headed outa Dublin airport eventually...both gald that we were finally in the air. Journey over wasn´t too bad, better than expected. We landed in Rio and was it hot, by the time we arrived at our hostel we were two toffe apples...very sticky. The first day we just hung out in Ipanema & Copacobana area, walking around getting a feel for the place. Chilled out on the beach that evening loving the fact that we weren´t in work. Second day we went to see Fluminese v Nacional in a Brazilian Cup game in Maracana Staduim, good to see [View Full Entry]

Well we certainly made up for doing nothing on Friday today. From 10am to 10pm we were active and it was a pretty cool and memorable day. First though I’ll finish off how we got on for the rest of Friday. We ventured out yesterday afternoon in search of a nice place to eat. We had read in the Lonely Planet (LP for future reference!) about a nice place a few blocks from us serving good local food. Slight problem though, everyone else was obviously reading the LP that day and there was a queue going out the door. Now, both [View Full Entry]

With no sign of Bob Hope, we head into Puerto Iguazu to catch the overnight bus to Rio. The taxi we had negotiated a price with the night before had done a runner and the hotel concierge ran off down the road to source us a cab. We asked the Brazilian border security if it was necessary to go though all the paper work as we were only catching a bus in Argentina and would be coming back through to Brazil in an hour or two. “It’s no problem” the woman replied as they stamped our passports to exit she advised [View Full Entry]
