Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Our 27hr bus ride from Salvador to Rio was reasonably pleasent, the chairs were comfortable and they reclined to almost flat with a leg rest, the only bad thing was that we were seated at the back of the bus right next to the toilets! Being next to the toilets on a 27hr bus trip full of gringos with Brazil bellies is the last thing you want. We managed to get by with the beautiful scenery. The vast difference from the outskirts of Salvador (very barron, dry and poor) and Rio (very green, lush and more wealthy) was amazing. The 27hrs [View Full Entry]

We’ve arrived, and in true Brit fashion we managed to burn ourselves on the first day! Whoop! My feet are now blistering and Steve’s back is looking nasty! But we’ve had an amazing couple of days (well apart from today but more of that in a bit). Steve is sat in a hammock opposite me at the mo, drinking beer! Sorry, it’s true! We arrived to boiling heat, it’s been in the low 30’s every day and coming from Plymouth it’s taking some getting used to. Our Hostel is really nice, one block from Ipanema beach!! And thank god not everyone [View Full Entry]

Well it´s been quite a while since our last entry, but as you can imagine there was little time to spare in a city like Rio! We left Trancoso shortly after our last entry with some banana cake and minging guacamole to keep us going. The bus ride took 21 hours but was quite enjoyable as they supplied us with biscuits and films for entertainment. After settling in to our hostel in Catete, we headed out to meet Dave and Ollie (Dave being our friend from Uni for those who don´t know him) for a few drinks. We were ambushed by [View Full Entry]

So the final part of my SA blog is finally here...time has indeed flown away with itself Our next part of the trip was up to Iguazu Falls. We did both the Argentina side and the Brazil side. There were so many places to walk around in the Argentina side and so many vantage points to check out the falls. We also took a boat trip which took us Under the falls which was great fun. We got completely soaked and unfortunately someone stupidly forgot to take out their passport and purse from their pockets....so I now have a very manky [View Full Entry]

Down at the Copa, Copacabana...de der de de der der der der duhhhh. We probably should have learnt some more words to that song because thats all we knew and we sang it constantly. I don't really know where to start with this blog. Carnival was a hell of a crazy week. A lot of the stories work better in person too so I'll probably be boring you all for years to come with them. So much happened! I was a bit worried that Carnival in Rio was all about the big parades that they have in this stadium that they [View Full Entry]

Better late than never as they say, so here we go with the first installment of our travels..... Had quite a funny start to our trip by literally bumping into Fabio Capello in Heathrow Duty Free. He didn't stop to chat unfortunately, but Lee did secretly follow him for a while to get a better look! Arrived late in Rio and the Carnival parties were still in full swing. Went to the winners parade for the Carnival at Rio's famous Sambadrome, which was quite an experience. Everything you would expect, thousands of people, fabulous costumes, banging drums and all in all [View Full Entry]

We´re still in Rio de Janeiro, waiting for the Cannon charger to arrive in the mail and Jake´s cold to get better (he caught the bug I had during Carnaval). After 2 weeks here, we are feeling the urge to move on. We may just head to Salvador without getting the camera charger; who knows if it will ever arrive anyway? It seems we are in the midst of a mini-heat wave here in Rio. Yesterday the temperature topped 40 degrees celsius-- abut 104 fahrenheit! What better way to pass the time than catch up on our blogging in an air [View Full Entry]
