Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

The Maracana is set to host the 2014 world cup final and what a stadium it is. It currently holds 90,000 people but holds the world record of nearly 200,000 for the world cup final between Brazil and Uruguay in 19??. Last night saw the match between Flamengo and Cabrofrinese take place. The attendance for this match was only about 25,000 but the noise and atmosphere created by the home fans was amazing. We were picked up from our hostel at about 4pm after only been dropped backed from our previous tour a few minutes earlier. A Danish couple and an [View Full Entry]

RIO!!!!! Everything was beautiful, streets smell of weed - and other stuff, chilled, not enough time during the day, and quiet at night (in the dodgy streets and in most of the bars and clubs mid-week) Best stuff included...... - Sugar Loaf Mountain....great views of the city at sunset with an amazing red sky. Could have stayed there all night - Watching the Brazilian league footie final in the Maracana stadium (Botafogo V Resende). The football wasn't great but the fans and atmosphere were amazing! - Taking the bonde (cute little old yellow tram) up through Santa Teresa - through s [View Full Entry]

With no sign of Bob Hope, we head into Puerto Iguazu to catch the overnight bus to Rio. The taxi we had negotiated a price with the night before had done a runner and the hotel concierge ran off down the road to source us a cab. We asked the Brazilian border security if it was necessary to go though all the paper work as we were only catching a bus in Argentina and would be coming back through to Brazil in an hour or two. “It’s no problem” the woman replied as they stamped our passports to exit she advised [View Full Entry]

Well we’re finally here. Months of talking and planning are finally over. Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the ride. Our 9 month cultural development course has begun! Dublin We woke up at 4:00am having to catch the shuttle bus at 4:30am to the airport. One problem though. I wasn’t feeling good. In fact I was feeling real bad. For the first time in my life I got a stomach bug. I honestly cant ever remember getting one before. I tried to deny it but soon I was getting fairly sick down the toilet. Both my parents had caught [View Full Entry]

Our 27hr bus ride from Salvador to Rio was reasonably pleasent, the chairs were comfortable and they reclined to almost flat with a leg rest, the only bad thing was that we were seated at the back of the bus right next to the toilets! Being next to the toilets on a 27hr bus trip full of gringos with Brazil bellies is the last thing you want. We managed to get by with the beautiful scenery. The vast difference from the outskirts of Salvador (very barron, dry and poor) and Rio (very green, lush and more wealthy) was amazing. The 27hrs [View Full Entry]

Well it´s been quite a while since our last entry, but as you can imagine there was little time to spare in a city like Rio! We left Trancoso shortly after our last entry with some banana cake and minging guacamole to keep us going. The bus ride took 21 hours but was quite enjoyable as they supplied us with biscuits and films for entertainment. After settling in to our hostel in Catete, we headed out to meet Dave and Ollie (Dave being our friend from Uni for those who don´t know him) for a few drinks. We were ambushed by [View Full Entry]

We’ve arrived, and in true Brit fashion we managed to burn ourselves on the first day! Whoop! My feet are now blistering and Steve’s back is looking nasty! But we’ve had an amazing couple of days (well apart from today but more of that in a bit). Steve is sat in a hammock opposite me at the mo, drinking beer! Sorry, it’s true! We arrived to boiling heat, it’s been in the low 30’s every day and coming from Plymouth it’s taking some getting used to. Our Hostel is really nice, one block from Ipanema beach!! And thank god not everyone [View Full Entry]
