Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Copa, Copacabana..... Now I have been there. I have seen the Jesus statue and Sugarloaf Mountain (aka Sukkertoppen aka Pao de Sucar) and the Sambadrome. I have been to Rio de Janeiro during Carneval! After using last weekend to get rid of a flue and to save up some energy, Kristian and I took the bus from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro late Sunday evening. There were some small problems getting our reserved tickets out, because it turned out that a copy of the passport was not enough. This was the only form of ID Kristian had, so he had [View Full Entry]

Parade

We got up around 11.30 after another late night and chilled around the hostel until about 3.30. Then we decided to get a taxi rather than a bus to the Rodavario where we had previously bought our bus tickets to Florianopolis. We jumped onto the bus in our seats, these huge reclining things with footrests, pretty comfortable. We sat down and got comfortable for our 18 hour bus trip. [View Full Entry]

Carnaval in Rio consists of 2 parts: 1) SAMBODROMO (where the parade takes place) Best $165 I´ve ever spent! Why so little? Why not thousands of dollars or sold out like shown on the internet? Well, things are a little different once you get to Rio, just like when you get anywhere. I mean, how many people in Brazil could afford to spend thousands of dollars on a parade?! But back to the actual show... It was absolutely amazing (as you can tell by the pictures)!! It started at 9pm and ended at 6am. My dad, aunt, best friend Vanessa and [View Full Entry]

My favorite were the gold people (More pics of them below)

We´ve entered a new country and we´re speaking a new language. It was a bit of a shock going from communicating rather comfortably in Spanish to having very few words available to you. Our Portuguese is improving slowly and our sign language even faster. We said goodbye to many of our truckmates in Rio, but we made a lot of good memories in Brazil. Iguaçu We entered Brazil at Foz do Iguaçu to visit the Brazilian side of the famous falls. We also took the opportunity to slip into Paraguay for the day as the three countries are very close. There [View Full Entry]

Day 7 So the day started off very early from the night before, Craig and a few others went home and me, Jen, Kerri-Ann and Taryn went to lapa, a place where loads of people hang out, drink, dance, eat and take copious amounts of drugs. We walked up the hill to the outside of a club, bought some beer and started chatting to some locals. they were from a favala, seriously dodgy geezers! So we decided to head home t about 7:30am, it was light. These guys wanted pictures so we took some photos and jumped into a taxi. I [View Full Entry]

Rio is a city everyone has heard about, good and bad. Known for its beautiful beaches and bodies, its slums and crime. Lots of people I had spoken to reported stories of muggings etc. so I was very much on my guard when I arrived. Especially after being pickpocketed in Buenos Aires. Even the taxi ride to the hostel made me a bit nervous. It really didn't help when the tyres lost traction on a steep cobblestone road and we start sliding backwards accompanied by the smell of burning rubber. I was beginning to worry for my life but we made [View Full Entry]

At approximately 4.27pm this afternoon, on the beach of Ipenema, Rio De Janiro, amidst the build up to final Champion's Parade for Carnival, an attempted thong theft was thwarted by a New Zealander tourist, who inadvertently witnessed the event whilst sunbathing. He stated, "I was just lying here on my side, when a bunch of about five young boys walked by, the last one slipping his feet into the thongs, which had been left in my care while their owner took a dip in the ocean, mid stride and continued walking off. When I realised, a called out 'Ooi, their not [View Full Entry]

Day 6 turned out to be one of the most eye opening days of our lives, we went to the largest shanty town in south America. We went on an organized tour with a few folk from our hostel. Our group of 10 headed into the favela city and our bus pulled over at the bottom of the shanty town. Ok.....so the first bit of we info from our guide.....we are only allowed to take pictures when the guide says its ok, we will be seeing drug lords and murderers so we cant risk exposing them. There are a number of [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Rio at 2am and went straight to bed. The next morning we collected our tickets for Rio Carnaval and spent the afternoon walking along Ipanema beach. The beautiful bronzed bodies were squashed onto every available patch of sand and as we passed the gay section the bodies became even more bronzed, incredibly buff and impossibly crowed. After sunset we went to a block party and joined in the drinking and dancing as a samba band played in a small park. The Carnaval had started. To shake off the hangover we joined the beautiful people on the beach for [View Full Entry]
