Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Rainbow at the falls
Rainbow at the falls
so many rainbows you could reach out and touch them
So the final part of my SA blog is finally here...time has indeed flown away with itself Our next part of the trip was up to Iguazu Falls. We did both the Argentina side and the Brazil side. There were so many places to walk around in the Argentina side and so many vantage points to check out the falls. We also took a boat trip which took us Under the falls which was great fun. We got completely soaked and unfortunately someone stupidly forgot to take out their passport and purse from their pockets....so I now have a very manky [View Full Entry]

Down at the Copa, Copacabana...de der de de der der der der duhhhh. We probably should have learnt some more words to that song because thats all we knew and we sang it constantly. I don't really know where to start with this blog. Carnival was a hell of a crazy week. A lot of the stories work better in person too so I'll probably be boring you all for years to come with them. So much happened! I was a bit worried that Carnival in Rio was all about the big parades that they have in this stadium that they [View Full Entry]

We´re still in Rio de Janeiro, waiting for the Cannon charger to arrive in the mail and Jake´s cold to get better (he caught the bug I had during Carnaval). After 2 weeks here, we are feeling the urge to move on. We may just head to Salvador without getting the camera charger; who knows if it will ever arrive anyway? It seems we are in the midst of a mini-heat wave here in Rio. Yesterday the temperature topped 40 degrees celsius-- abut 104 fahrenheit! What better way to pass the time than catch up on our blogging in an air [View Full Entry]

Better late than never as they say, so here we go with the first installment of our travels..... Had quite a funny start to our trip by literally bumping into Fabio Capello in Heathrow Duty Free. He didn't stop to chat unfortunately, but Lee did secretly follow him for a while to get a better look! Arrived late in Rio and the Carnival parties were still in full swing. Went to the winners parade for the Carnival at Rio's famous Sambadrome, which was quite an experience. Everything you would expect, thousands of people, fabulous costumes, banging drums and all in all [View Full Entry]

well you have to pay him a visit!

I spent a whirlwind 2.5 days in Rio de Janeiro, taking in as many sights as my feet could handle. I was lucky enough to have an invitation to stay with a friend of my cousin´s, at her apartment in Leblon. Leblon is the ritziest and probably the safest area of town, which was great for me, because I was a bit nervous to walk around Rio on my own. I was also lucky in that she had a connection for buying me a ticket to the "Sabado Campoa" - the Parade of Champions, during which the 6 top-ranking samba schools [View Full Entry]

Amsterdam has now dropped to 3rd while Rio and Barcelona rival for 1st on my list of favorite cities. Why? 1) "RIO IS DANGEROUS" Rio is not as dangerous as you think or expect. Before coming here, I was pretty worried. I heard that little kids might come up to me with guns in broad daylight and demand my stuff, and that I shouldn´t wear a purse or bring a camera or iPod out on the beach or when walking around. Next thing I know, I go out on high alert and look like an idiot because everyone on the beach [View Full Entry]

Copa, Copacabana..... Now I have been there. I have seen the Jesus statue and Sugarloaf Mountain (aka Sukkertoppen aka Pao de Sucar) and the Sambadrome. I have been to Rio de Janeiro during Carneval! After using last weekend to get rid of a flue and to save up some energy, Kristian and I took the bus from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro late Sunday evening. There were some small problems getting our reserved tickets out, because it turned out that a copy of the passport was not enough. This was the only form of ID Kristian had, so he had [View Full Entry]

We got up around 11.30 after another late night and chilled around the hostel until about 3.30. Then we decided to get a taxi rather than a bus to the Rodavario where we had previously bought our bus tickets to Florianopolis. We jumped onto the bus in our seats, these huge reclining things with footrests, pretty comfortable. We sat down and got comfortable for our 18 hour bus trip. [View Full Entry]

We´ve entered a new country and we´re speaking a new language. It was a bit of a shock going from communicating rather comfortably in Spanish to having very few words available to you. Our Portuguese is improving slowly and our sign language even faster. We said goodbye to many of our truckmates in Rio, but we made a lot of good memories in Brazil. Iguaçu We entered Brazil at Foz do Iguaçu to visit the Brazilian side of the famous falls. We also took the opportunity to slip into Paraguay for the day as the three countries are very close. There [View Full Entry]
