OK, another rapid fire blog post! I've really been slackin' on my blog posts, and since we only have three weeks left on this trip so I figured I had better get my last, very wordy post about our trip cranked out so Sky can start working on our final blog post for our trip! Puerto Natales, Chile After spending a couple of days back in Ushuaia getting my whits about me after Antarctica, Sky and I headed back on the road on our way to Puerto Natales, Chile, the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. We were headed there to spend 5 days trekking the famous "W" trail. Thankfully our bus ride to Chile was one of the least eventful bus rides we've had to date! Twelve continuous hours of relatively smooth roads, no ... read more

Rio, was good, very good; just as well as this (7 days) is the longest we have ever stayed in any one place. We were a little worried at sharing a room in a large apartment with the owner along with the comings an goings of relatives and friends etc. but need not have been; we were made very welcome and very much left to ourselves to come and go as we pleased. There are certainly some fringe benefits from living with a local; you get the good oil on what´s good and not, where to go and not. The location was ideal; (Aproador) squeezed between Copacabana and Ipanema we were spoilt for choice with beaches although they still can´t top those in Aus. We arrived on a weekend with 30+ temps and the beaches very ... read more

Carnaval is one big, fun party, obvs. The most surprising thing was the sheer city-wide scale of it and its levelling effect: age, class, nationality didn't matter. Fancy dress and beer did. Everyone got involved and was basically really happy, from grannies to little kids, even if just in their local 'bloco'. You can see and hear Carnaval literally everywhere, from the singing groups of teens on public buses to the mask/hat/feather vendors, the never-ending crates of beer or the gridlocked traffic. Brazilians are culturally and attitudinally sound anyway, and Carnaval is also a celebration of sexuality - flesh and cross dressing is everywhere! Carnaval seemed to consist of two main events. One was the Samba Parade at the Sambadrome (Sambódromo), a bespoke stadium designed by O... read more

Previous two blogs are Brazil except Carnival. This is Carnival - what we came for! On Saturday we took a taxi to the Sambodromo - we had tickets for Monday, so we wanted to do a reccy. We found the closest Metro to the stadium and tried it out. The Metro system is also just one price, about £1.20, to anywhere on it's 3 lines. Not too extensive, and easy to use - but for the next three evenings it was absolutely packed, and running 24 hours for the carnival. We took the Metro back again that night and watched the floats and samba schools going into the Sambodromo until around 2am in the morning. It was really impressive to see the floats close up, so much work goes onto them and the costumes. The carnival ... read more

We flew into Rio on a day when we knew there was a lull in the pre-Carnaval partying. The program told us so, and the aim was to squeeze all the general tourist sights into the few days we had before the festivities resumed. We were really looking forward to seeing some serious art galleries and museums. Rehgan has been suffering something like "art withdrawals" as most of Brazil is lacking in what we would consider fine art. There's obviously plenty of culture, in the forms of music, dance, religion, etc. but what he's missing is pretty pictures on the wall of a decent gallery. Unfortunately Rio did not come through for us and it wasn't for lack of trying. The best display of paintings we saw was the Naïve Art Museum. A lovely little collection ... read more

As someone who absolutely adores a good festival, I was not about to go to South America and miss the biggest festival in the world -Carnival in Rio de Jeniero. In fact our apartment for the one week festival was booked and paid for in May of last year. The anticipation of actually arriving was a very drawn out process as the bus crawled along at 6kms an hour on the highway for a good three hours in torrential rain, however by the time that I arrived the rain had vanished (and was never to be seen again) and the apartment was perfect. It was also good to see Matt and spend some time with the others in the apartment who were from back home. With Carnival there is the official side to it - the ... read more

Unless you're being picky, I have now visited every continent in the world. I was always going to come to South America at some stage and Brazil in particular. Having seen, read and heard so much about the place - to finally be here was super-exciting. A place so different to what you're used to - in my head Brazil is almost the definition of exotic - I had finally reached a final frontier, of sorts. There were additional reasons that helped ramp up the anticipation of this trip; I was coming to the end of a work project that had completely consumed my life for the last six months - this was to be my reward; it had been absolutely freezing in the UK and I was heading for a tropical climate; I would be ... read more

We were very privileged to travel in Business Class the 11h flight to Buenos Aires. We spent 3 days there, 2 with Steve's dad and one rainy day before our flight to Rio. There the average steak on the menu weights 1kg and if you want vegetables you have to order it separate. The city reminded me of Milan with its old buildings and cafés. We arrived late night into Rio de Janeiro and found a hotel close to Copacabana Beach. The sight of the lit up Corcovado in the clouds were magic. The first day we just explored the beaches from Copacabana all the way past Ipanema to Leblon. Unfortunately the rainy weather caught up with us and we had to time our visit to Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado to enjoy the views. After ... read more

All the places we stayed in Central and South America all had many things in common. The ancient culture in Peru and Mexico is very similar. Rio de Janeiro did not have the same history but had the same feel as the other countries. One of the first things you notice is the presence of police, military and security personnel everywhere. These men and women are fully kitted out - truncheons, pistols and machine guns. It makes you feel secure and a little bit dubious about the place you are in all at the same time. But we didn't have any trouble anywhere and never felt unsafe in any of the countries. In saying that, aside from the machine guns, they were really no more armed than anywhere else we have been, it's just their presence ... read more
