Travel Blog Posts

OK, another rapid fire blog post! I've really been slackin' on my blog posts, and since we only have three weeks left on this trip so I figured I had better get my last, very wordy post about our trip cranked out so Sky can start working on our final blog post for our trip! Puerto Natales, Chile After spending a couple of days back in Ushuaia getting my whits about me after Antarctica, Sky and I headed back on the road on our way to Puerto Natales, Chile, the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. We were headed there to spend 5 days trekking the famous "W" trail. Thankfully our bus ride to Chile was one of the least eventful bus rides we've had to date! Twelve continuous hours of relatively smooth roads, no ... read more

This is absolutely going be the hardest blog post to write. In all of the places we've been in the last 11-months there has always been some sort of relatable experience to compare it to. I have never wanted to tell someone about someplace so much but be at such a loss for words to describe it, or have as many pictures I want to share that won't do it a bit of justice! So please enjoy all of the photos at the end. As Sky mentioned in our last post there was only one female spot available as a last minute trip so the decision was made that I would head out to Antarctica while Sky went fishing. I felt quite guilty taking this opportunity solo, plus after spending 24/7 together for the previous 9 ... read more

A couple months have passed since we successfully left Bolivia behind and started our journey to "the southern most city in the world" Ushuaia, Argentina. The following details our tremendously long journey down the entire length of Argentina, 3,200 miles. Salta and Cordoba We spent a couple days in each of these cities. Both had nice plazas, beautiful colonial buildings and impressive churches. There was really no draw with either place, just good stops between long bus rides. Mendoza-Malbec Country By the time we reached Mendoza we had already spent 35 hrs. on buses and hadn't even gotten a third of the way down through Argentina. We had also incurred another bus meltdown that left us stranded in the middle of nowhere for a few hours waiting to transfer onto a different bus. We found a ... read more

Butch Cassidy: Kid, the next time I say, "Let's go someplace like Bolivia," let's GO someplace like Bolivia. Copacabana After an uneventful bus ride along the banks of Lake Titicaca, and after paying $135 each to cross Bolivia's borders we arrived in the "resort" town of Copacabana. After locating our hostel we quickly turned on the television to watch The Rose Bowl. We spent that evening not only annoyed by the Badgers performance, but also with each other's incessant renditions of Barry Manilow's catchy lyrics. Our next day was spent touring Isla del Sol, the legendary Inca creation site and the birthplace of the sun in Inca mythology, namely the mystical appearance of Manco Capac and his sister-wife Mama Ocllo. Just a couple of personal opinions about Isla del Sol. #1: yo, Bolivia, invest in some ... read more

Having fortunately escaped Ecuador in one piece, we had a beautiful flight over the Andes into Cuzco, Peru. Cuzco After basically spending six months at sea level the altitude and temperature of Cuzco was a bit of a shock, but also a pleasant change. The city is packed nicely into a beautiful valley at 11,200 ft. The little hostel we found was just outside the city center and up about 100 steps, which kicked our asses and left us breathless during our first few ascents. There is a tremendous number of amazing Inca historical sites to see in the city itself and the nearby Sacred Valley and we hit just about everything prior to embarking on our Inca Trail hike. I read a great book titled, "The Last Days of the Incas" over the previous few ... read more

South America!!! After zigzagging across Central America for 6 months we finally made the jump into South America! We booked a trip to the Galápagos Islands at the beginning of December so we unfortunately had to skip over Colombia for the time being, but hope to experience that amazing country either on our way home, or perhaps on another adventure in the future. That being said we packed our bags and hopped on a plane down to Ecuador. Quito, Ecuador After an exhausting day of travel we arrived in Quito at 11:30pm, which in itself wasn't too bad, but it was the hour long line waiting to get through immigration that was the killer. Exhausted we arrived at our hotel at 1:30am, promptly hit the sack and slept until noon the next day. The first thing ... read more

We truly appreciate those of you that have been following our blog and posting comments. We apologize for doing such a shitty job of posting on it and really have no justifiable excuse. We are well, still together after over 4100+ continuous hours in each other's company, and having a great adventure. We last touched base at the end of September when we were departing Belize after a wonderful month in our home away from home. Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica Upon arriving in San Jose, Costa Rica we spent a short night there and then hopped on a bus over to Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast. It was a beautiful 5-hour ride through mountainous regions and lush rainforests. We had forgotten how much more developed Costa Rica is than its neighboring countries to ... read more

Corn Islands, Nicaragua Big Corn Island After twirling around Central America since the end of May we finally reached our goal of being able to spend the month of September on the Corn Islands which are located off the Carribean coast of Nicaragua. We had really built these Islands up in our minds since we began planning our trip, and I wanted September to be special as we were celebrating Sky's 40th birthday away from home. I told Sky that the entire month was his to do what he loves the most, and that's to fish. Thoughts of fishing, diving, snorkeling, relaxing, exploring unadulterated island life, and celebrating his birthday were kinda like visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads, so after an uneventful hour-long flight from Managua to Big Corn Island on August 24th ... read more

Antigua, Guatemala The shuttle from El Salvador to Antigua was uneventful. We were the only two on the mini-bus and the journey only took around five hours. We arrived late in the evening and were fortunate to find a room for the night. Antigua is a very touristy city, with loads of ex-pats and a Spanish school on every corner. This is probably due to the fact the city is quite spectacular. Antigua is surrounded by three volcanoes, the colonial architecture is the finest we have seen to date, and the climate is not the stand-there- and-sweat environs we have become accustommed to. We spent a day wandering aimlessly through the city, finding that around every corner there was another interesting church or building. Antigua has a little cosmo feel to it too, with cafes everywhere ... read more

Matagalpa, Nicaragua We survived the Revolution in San Juan del Sur, but unfortunately there were fireworks and blaring techno music that lasted all night, through the morning, literally until 5 am. It was a rough night with little sleep, but we boarded a microbus at 6 am and headed back through Rivas and ended up in Managua. We tried everything in our power to avoid Managua and get off the bus prior to entering the Capital, we hadn't heard anything good about Managua, plus we wanted to avoid the 1 million people that flooded the city to celebrate the Revolution. At one point the bus stopped in Masaya, we got off with our packs, the driver asked a few locals about a bus to Matagalpa and couldn't get any info, so we got back on the ... read more
