Woke up his morning to find the rain had gone and the sun was blaring yay! Me and Steph also woke up to some bites on our legs which must have been from some bugs last night at the rooftop bar. I was particularly gutted as I hardly ever get bitten but it seems I'm flavoursome to the South American bugs so that doesn't bode well for next week! We had originally planned to go up Sugarloaf Mountain tonight for sunset but as the weather was so good and it was forecast to change to rain again later we decided to go for breakfast then head across to go up it this morning. So we had breakfast then got an Uber across to the ticket area at the bottom. It was still pretty early by this ... read more

The alarms went off this morning about 6.45am to wake us up in time for our taxi at 7.15am. I slept really well and got a good 8 hours sleep so when the alarm went off and woke me from my deep sleep I wasn't too happy! The plan was to get downstairs for 7am which was when breakfast started which was included with our room. We just about made it after me yet again running round throwing all the random things I'd left out into my hand luggage. Steph's got the whole packing the night before down to a tee where as yet again I still haven't learnt my lesson! We checked out and managed to get a drink with a bit of food before waiting in reception for our taxi driver who incidentally was ... read more

Thursday 27 July - Brazil We were awoken early by the taxi drivers strike as they tooted in procession past the hotel apparently accompanied by fireworks. There were on their way to the carnival celebration arena to present a petition to the Mayor, they were complaining about the Uber drivers undercutting their fares. Later we saw them in the arena, there appeared to be thousands of yellow taxis involved. An all day tour of Rio today seeing all the main sights. Up to Christ The Redeemer on the cog train and stop to go inside the huge Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian which was completed in 1979 and can hold 4,000 sitting and 20,000 standing. A photo stop to see the worlds largest mural, by Kobra, painted for the Olympics 2016, in an area of regeneration ... read more

Wednesday 26 July - Argentina to Brazil Once again the monkeys were leaping all over the balconies this morning, some of them seemed to have been rewarded with chunks of no doubt stolen food. The staff were shooing them away by waving what appeared to be ribbons on sticks. Our guide collected us for the short journey to the airport in Brazil and told us how the monkeys could open the sliding door and raid the minibar. Apparently this was causing them health problems as the coke and salted nuts gave them high blood pressure. Ismay asked him where they lived and for a fleeting moment she believed him when he told her they had their own private hotel. We took our flight to Rio de Janeiro arriving in the early afternoon. Our hotel had a ... read more

June 13. We emerged from the fog of a 9-hour overnight flight into the Rio airport, which is large and modern, walked about half a mile (literally - I have a pedometer), and entered a long, slow immigration line serviced by only two agents. The joys of travel. Things were looking up, though, when we breezed through customs and emerged into the real world to find our Overseas Adventure Travel guide, Danna, and four other group members waiting for us. From that point on we were well taken care of with comfortable bus transportation and conversation on the way to our Rio Othon Palace Hotel right on the beach in Copacabana. First impressions of the city: huge, spread out over a large area divided by beautiful peaks and bodies of water, requiring bridges and tunnels that ... read more

First time in Brazil, I was amazed how large Rio de Janeiro was. Every bit of land on hillside as was built on, from favelas to multi-storey buildings. We were staying at Copacabana beach, so spent the next day planning the trip and then relaxing at the beach. The waves are pretty crazy there, with the odd one rolling you right over. It was understandable how not too many people were out too far in the water because of this. The next day was spent at the Jardin Botanico. There were lots of monkeys there, pretty cute wee things, we saw one cracking a nut on the ground with his human like hands and others grooming each other. There was a lovely mix of flowers across Brazil and South America as well as the rest of ... read more

Brazilan trip 31st March I had to get up along with John before three to get to the Manchester Airport for flight to Amsterdam at 5.55 am. I hardly slept at all so landed in Rio exhausted, having frittered away the time on board watching films. Both flights were uneventful in spite of having a baby aged not much more than a year behind me on the long haul one. I forgot he was there and so apparently did the parents who largely ignored him (and each other) during the flight. From time to time he helped himself to breast milk with very little assistance from his mother and the rest of the time slept. Apparently a successful approach to child-rearing, if the aim is to pretend you don't have a baby! In order to get ... read more

Rio I made a major blunder in my planning, only allowing two full days in Rio. I had a couple of strolls along Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, watched the surfers at Arpiador and had a swim in the warm water of Ipanema in between visits to the statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado and the favelas of xxx. Even so, I loved Rio and would have liked to spend a lot more time there. The beaches are quite special, and are right in the heart of the city, the headland of Axxx creates some impressive waves and the surfers were able to do some pretty cool stuff. The people are not quite as beautiful as the PR would have us believe, and a lot of the bodies on display are a bit on the chunky ... read more

After a night at sea we arrived in Rio de Janerio. Sugarloaf and Christ the Redeemer statue greeted us. Our travel companions, Larry & Lisa Ingraham, choose to visit Mt Corcovado and the iconic statue of Christ which overlooks the city. Barb and I chose to hit the beaches, Copacabana and Ipanema. While the temps were only in the 80's, the humidity was the hardest for us to adjust to but, hey, we're in RIO!!! Barb got to see many hard bodied studs in their speedos and I got an eyeful of butt floss and nipples. The day we were there was a national holiday so the crowds were fairly large. We observed a march by a group of people, half clad in bright orange T-shirts with language that we could only partially interpret. Portuguese is ... read more
