So as I explained Favella is basically shanty town and Rio is over run by Favella´s. The day before I went on the tour I saw the film 'Cidade de Deus´ (City of Gods) which is basically a true story about the gang war that goes on in one of the bigger Favellas in Rio (If you haven’t seen it you must, even though it is all in subtitles it is wicked - and perfect preparation for my Favella tour). The Favella we saw runs about 30% of Rio’s drugs and is estimated to turnover approximately US$ 5m per month and there is approximately 200,000 people living here. On the day we went there were certain parts that we could not go as there was a big massive funeral for a guy called Elloy who was ... read more

Ok so am not sure that words are going to do this night any justice but I will try to explain the best that I can so you can imagine. Background: Favella basically means shanty town, look at my Favella Tour for more info. The Favella Funk party is basically a nightclub in the middle of one of the biggest Favella sites in Rio and there is approximately 3,000 people partying hard in this big Favella, straight to Gay and from poor to rich. Hence the reason why you are not allowed to take cameras in because apparently Brazilian football stars are often partying (with another girl other than they should be). Music: Brazilian Funk and a little bit of Reggae and hip hop I was on my way to being drunk after the football but ... read more

On arriving in Copacabana the first thing that I must tell you about is my hostel Stone of a Beach, definitely one of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed in with wicked staff, good food and the hot tub on the roof terrace......(hence the reason why I got stuck there for so long! So decided to go to a futbal match (how the Brazilian’s spell it) and watch the local side Botafogo. Brazil currently has four local teams and they all play big matches at the Maracaña which is currently the biggest stadium in the world with a capacity of 180,000. The Brazilians are renowned for their love of Football but what you fail to realise is that they are so passionate but there is no health and safety rules like back home. Hence the fact ... read more

The Convent Stairway These stairs are a mosaic made of over 2 thousand especially made tiles which were broken with a hammer, the 215 steps and are a tribute to the people of Brazil by being in the colour of the Brazilian flag, green blue and yellow. The artist began in 1990 and when he nearly finished in 1998 he decided to make the stairs a constantly changing work of art and therefore invites people from all over the world to send in a tile and he will send a photo of the tile in the step. The current tiles are from all over the world. The artist is called Selaron and he is a chillean painter, at the bottom of the stairs is a picture of a pregnant woman which he paints in all of ... read more

Tina and I dragged James to a Robbie (otherwise affectionately know as Hobbie here in Brazil) Williams concert last night. We arrived after a home made caiparinhia 1/2 hour late (Brazilians are so laid back) and Robbie and his mate Jonny Wilks stop mid song to say 'look there are more people coming in' and he’s says 'what time do you call this' fairly amusing seeing as we were just strolling in. Robbie managed to learn a complete Portugese word 'Obrigado' which he mentioned at every given opportunity - In all seriousness he is a showman, and he knows how to put on a good concert - and it only cost us about 45 quid - so we did it! We are heading of to Ille Grande today and will then be working our way toward ... read more

After a long 14hr flight into San Paulo then to Rio, Lou and l arrived into a rainy, overcast Rio de Janeiro. The weather maintained, how should l put it, crap (!) for the entire 3 days we were there (as you might be able to tell l was quite gutted about that), nonetheless we had a great few days toughin it through the tropical weather and doing the things we went there to do. l met up with Belinda and Chelsea on the first evening (friends from Aus that l hadn't seen for a long time who were joining us on the 'Los Loco' tour). So great to see them again. Unfortunately we didn't give them much time to even check in before Lou and l rushed them out of the hotel and into a ... read more

Back in Rio ´to meet up with Tina again. Tina is very kindly letting us stay in her apartment. Spending a lot of time on the beach. Interesting observation is that in Brazil tan lines are considered cool, as such the ladies wear strapless tops in the evening to show the bikini lines. This logic should mean I am very cool as I am one big tan line! Unfortunately Stacey's tan is coming on nicely. The beach Ipanema number 9 (considered the coolest) is awesome and the water is warm and capable of handing out a good battering - although it was more so when I was here with Matt and Innis; when they werent on beach 8 (the gay beach). Went up to see Big Jesus as the weather was lovely when we set off. ... read more

We went exploring today into Centro which is the city of Rio and the business hub. Absolutely packed, people everywhere. We tried to do the cultural thing and visit the National library and a few museums but they were either closed or to be frank - rather dull. We spent ages walking to find a Palace and then had a walk around the square where slavery was abolished in Brazil. We then hopped on the ´Bonde´ up to Santa Teresa which used to be a Bohemianesque sort of place. The tram is quite an experience as it runs through Lapa (which is a ´lively´ neighbourhood) and as such young scallywags jump on and off the tram and try to nick valuables. We managed to escape unscathed though and were amazed when we got to the top ... read more
