Lago Titicaca is only a few hours from La Paz and, although we'd seen it from the Peruvian side last time around, we wanted to see the Bolivian part. It should have been a simple matter of grabbing a bus to Copacabana, and at first it was. We bought our tickets, and settled down to wait. Then, confusion. The manager of the bus station started to abuse the ticket sellers. Apparently the road to Copacabana was closed – protests and unrest – and they shouldn't have been selling tickets. Really? Did we need to reassess? No, we were assured, as long as you don't want to go onto Perú you would have no problems. The thing is, most tourists do want to go onto Perú. So, when we got on the bus, the police boarded and ... read more

I'm going to share with you possible one of the funniest quotes I've heard on my trip thus far...and I guess it's only funny because its oh so true, well that and I think it makes for the perfect start to my blog A young backpacker turns to his friends and says; "you know its so funny how you when you travel you start to appreciate the small things in life, the other day I was so thankful that I was able to do a dry fart" I giggled to myself and thought, he's spot on, or as Mr McIvor would say "you've hit the nail on the head there hannah" When you travel you do start to appreciate the smaller things in life; like the ability to drink tap water, be able to make the ... read more

Otimme paivaretken Isla del Solille, suomeksi Auringon saari. Laiva vei meidat ensin saaren pohjoisosaan.

What I remembered about Lake Titicaca is its significance to Inca history and considered to be the birth place of their heritage. With our travels to Peru earlier this year, we came across different travelers and locals that insinuate the importance of this area. I’ve always been a sucker for history, so it wasn’t a surprise that we’ll end up going to this magical place. But before we get there, we needed to make our way to Copacabana; which is the best gateway to Lake Titicaca (within Bolivia). Copacabana was just 2 hours commute from La Paz and easily accessible. The paved roads and scenic drive adds galore to the commuting experience. The town itself isn’t that big, even though the place is mostly flocked by tourist, there are small spots in town that you can ... read more

It took us 3 hours to get from Puno to Copacabana, with a quick stop at the border. The four Americans on board were rushed to the immigration office because we had some lengthy paperwork to fill out. All other nationalities got stamped through but we had to fork over a hefty $135USD for our visa. Once we arrived in Copacabana we checked into a very... interesting hostel. It was called 6 de Agosto and at 25 Bolivianos ($3.56USD) per night we couldn't complain. Besides, once we got rid of the bedspreads it wasn't so bad. (We just used our own sleeping bags and pillow cases). Copacabana is even smaller than Puno. The main street is pleasant, it has quite a few shops, restaurants, coffee shops and leads right down to the docks. In the morning ... read more

You may think that we had seen the last of the Incas once we entered in Bolivia. If you did, then you are wrong. You have undestimated the extent of the Inca kingdom. Originating from Cusco, the Inca empire once stretched north to Ecuador, south to northern Chile, east to the coast, and west through the Andes and partway into the Amazon. Present day borders in South America do not reflect past realities. That said, to my mind Lake Titicaca seemed a strange place to find major Inca ruins. Most of their important buildings were set in mountains. They seemed to have had little interest in lakes or even the Pacific ocean. However, Lake Titicaca was important to their mythology. In some of their creation myths, the Inca people originated from the lake. At least two ... read more
