I'm going to share with you possible one of the funniest quotes I've heard on my trip thus far...and I guess it's only funny because its oh so true, that and I think it makes for the perfect start to my blog
A young backpacker turns to his friends and says; "you know its so funny how you when you travel you start to appreciate the small things in life, the other day I was so thankful that I was able to do a dry fart" I giggled to myself and thought, he's spot on, or as Mr McIvor would say "you've hit the nail on the head there hannah" When you travel you do start to appreciate the smaller things in life; like the ability to drink tap water, be able to make the decision to have a hot or cold shower, have toilet paper available in almost every toilet you enter, knowing that you have a nice comfy bed to go home to, being able to eat a nice fresh salad and yes being confident in the fact that if you so choose to flatulate that you're not going to shit your pants. Here's to travelling in south america
and all of those small things that make this place such a joy to be in!
I definitely wouldn't have written that last line during my 24hr impending doom that was food poisoning ocntracted not from street food, or salad but from a chicken toastie from the hostel that I admit was a suspect shade of pink and regardless i decided to eat it....big mistake! About 3 hours later I found myself on the loo feeling like death and I won't go into details because I myself am about to eat lunch but lets just say I was faced with a very tough decision, not once but numerous times throughout the 24hours....to stay on the toilet or to get off the loo and turn around....I went with the former and good decision, I think, if vomiting all over yourself when you failed to open the lid of the bin is a better option!
So after 24 hours of having it come out both ends and no one there to pat me on the back, hold my hair back, get me a glass of water or tell me everything was going to be alright I was hating on life and ready
to pack it in. Being sick in a foreign country isn't fun at any time let alone when you are well alone. So here I was feeling extremely sorry for myself and wishing I could just transport myself to a different continent, namely home, for a day or so. After a long chat on skype with my girls I was feeling somewhat better, got myself on a bus to Puno (I don't know how) and booked myself into a hotel room for two night. There is nothing that a private bathroom, a double bed, internet and cable tv won't fix and come day 5 of my ordeal I was feeling like I could probably eat something.
Then I met my Irish boys again and everything was looking like it was going to be ok. Conor, Cahil and Rob were on their way to Copacabana from Cusco and so I got my sympathy from them!
Have I mentioned that I finally made it to Bolivia!! With a huge grin on my face (namely because I was feeling better) I crossed the over the border from Peru to Bolivia, I made it, to Copacabana!!
Copacabana- After a relatively painless three hour
bus ride I arrived in the sunny little water side town, booked a bus out of there to Lapaz for the following day, a hotel room and did some very much needed washing. Cahil and I decided to check out Isla de Sol as I'd heard nothing but rave reviews...unfortunately I hadn't done all that much research because we should have been staying on the island! Nevertheless we took a painfully slow boat for 12Bs to the island where we spent 50minutes looking for ruins that didn't exist, downed a beer and then got back on the painfully slow boat to the main island. However I will say that Copacabana is an amazingly tranquil place, super beautiful and I only wish I had have spent the night there. The boat ride, albeit slow was very relaxing and the views are priceless. During my short stay I managed to get some nice photos and when we returned to the island enjoyed a nice dinner (first one in like 5 days!) and watched the lead up to the Royal Wedding, I'm not sure which one I enjoyed more!
The following morning I got my fix of the wedding, enjoyed the beautiful weather
whilst sipping on a delicious hot chocolate and before long I found myself sitting crammed in the back seat of the bus onwards to Lapaz.
Copacabana, a beautiful place to chill out for a couple of days in one of the many hostels on the island. You should check it out, go on I dare you!
