WaitangiAfter landing in Auckland, we took a shuttle bus from the airport to the ferry terminal in the city centre and took a boat over to Devonport on the North Shore. As Auckland has now grown so big, there are now 5 separate cities within it, so we were technically staying in 'North Shore City'. We started our 2 month stay here in style, staying with our friends Sid and Christine, whose holiday apartment turned out to be a luxurious house in the very pretty town of Devonport. From their breakfast table, we enjoyed the views of Auckland City across the water and soon joined the locals in their favourite pastime of watching the various ships coming and going into the harbour. Unfortunately we mis-timed our stay and failed to see the arrival of the Queen ... read more

The best bang for your buck in Rotorua is to head out of town to Wai-O-Tapo. Although still pricey, it had more to offer than Te Puia and in fact we wished we had more time to spend there! The Lady Knox geyser goes off each morning at precisely 10:15 so we packed up our car and drove like the wind down to the park, arriving just in time. Little did we know, unlike Old Faithful at Yellowstone, this geyser doesn't erupt on its own - an employee of the park pours soap into the geyser at 10:15 AM and coaxes it to erupt! LAME! And to cap it off, we found a friendly notice from the New Zealand police department in the mailbox when we returned home to the States: it was an automated speeding ... read more

After unexpectedly bumping into an old friend in the supermarket yesterday, Glynn and I felt like things might have started looking up for us again. Today we had something equally as wonderful to look forward to with the arrival in Wellington of more friends we had met on our travels in Asia. We met a lovely German couple called Steffen and Susi in Melaka a couple of months ago and when we got onto the subject of onward travel, they told us they would be in New Zealand at around the same time as us. We agreed back then to keep in touch and try and meet up again as and when our paths crossed. Well, today was the day they were due to come to Wellington after touring South Island so at 11am, we ambled ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch January 3rd 2007

After a three-hour flight from Sydney, we arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand’s third largest city, eager to begin our New Zealand adventure. Christchurch seemed like an alright city, but the weather was fairly crummy (high of 56 degrees and grey clouds), and since I’m seasonal affective, I think the poor weather may have clouded my judgment on the town. It was also a public holiday on our day of arrival, so not everything was open, and the streets were uncrowded. The grey skies and the uncrowded streets made things seem kind of bleak. Due to the weather, we thought we’d try an indoor attraction, so we visited the International Antarctic Centre. Not the best place to get out of the cold as the pictures exhibit. It's okay, it wasn't cold everywhere, only in the Antarctic simulation ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling Harbour January 3rd 2007

Once again we got up this morning and took the ferry to Circular Quay and again to Darling Harbour. We had planned to go the the aquarium first, but the queue was extermely long, and as it was open until 10pm we had then rest off the day to go back. Instead we went to the Maritime Museum. The indoor museum is free to look around and contains lots of relics relating to the Maritime history. The most interesting part was The Destroyer warship and a submarine, both moored in the harbour, which you could freely explore. The submarine was partically interesting to look around and its quite incredible to see how small and claustrophic the quarters were that the crew lived in. The crew slept in bunks just large enough for there strapped-down body, sometimes ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Plenty » Tauranga January 3rd 2007

Well, its that time of year, holiday time that is. A time to spend with friends and family, which is always difficult for the lone traveller as the family is back at home which the holiday season painfuly reminds them of. Fortunetly I have the friends. I had decided early on to come back to Tauranga for Christmas as some of my good friends, Pauliene, Jen, Jenna, Maria, Karen, Emily and last but certainly not least Toby wouldbe there. I was nothing like Christmas at home, but after we stopped trying to make it like what we were missing we had a very nice Christmas indeed. On Christmas Eve we drank vine and ate a stew that I made with dumplings (did you know that shortening over here is made from lard, the dumplings were kind ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » Docklands January 3rd 2007

Today did not have the energy to do a lot in the morning. Went for a walk and dinner with Sampsa in the newly redeveloped Docklands area, that was only about 15-20mins walk away. Had an amazing seafood platter that was way too big for us to possibly eat. After dinner we went to the Sofitel in the center of town and went to the bar for a quick drink on the 35th floor. Tänään mulla ei ollut kovin paljon energiaa tehdä juurikaan mitään aamupäivällä. Menimme Sampsan kanssa kävelylle vanhalle Docklands satamalueelle missä söimme päivällistä. Päivällisen jälkeen menimme keskustaan Sofiteliin jossa istuimme näköalabaarissa 35nessä kerroksessa.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » CBD January 3rd 2007

This morning we were up early 05.00am (I am sure you will agree this is officially early!) to catch a flight to Melbourne. After dropping our bags off at our Guest House, we proceeded to explore the city, first of all taking a tram to the centre and then walking the streets. We discovered a free tourist tram ride the circles the centre grid system of the city which we happily rode on for the whole circuit! The city is very cosmopolitan, with every restaurant you can imagine and so many pieces of art, sculpture and modern architecture to keep your eyes out for, you would be forgiven for thinking you were in a city in Eurpoe. We pretty much covered every inch of the centre grid before I started to do my ‘nodding dog action’ ... read more
