After saying our goodbyes to Stu in the morning, we booked out of our hotel, caught the underground to City Quay, followed by a ferry to Manly, and a walk to the Summer Manly YHA. It took us a while to find and with our heavy backpacks Shelley started to get a little fed up with carrying them. Eventually we found it, and it was very very nice. Basically, it is a Management College that opens in the summer as a youth hostel. The place was large and very impressive. Unfortunately they only had single rooms left - so we had one each! After updating some of our blog we headed back down into the centre of Manly to do some exploring. Manly Beach is very popular and again big with surfers. Manly itself feels like ... read more

2.1.2007 - Perilla Sydneyssa! Sydneyn lentokentalla asiat sujuvat mallikkaasti. Saan Working Holiday -leiman jo lentokentalla, joten siita ei pida enaa stressata. Aulassa etsin yleisopuhelimen, soitan hostelliin ja tilaan kyydin. Pienen odottelun jalkeen kuski tulee sovittuun paikkaan. Minibussiin tulee kyytilaisia muihinkin hostelleihin, joten pujottelemme liikenteen seassa ensin keskustaan ja sielta Kings Crossiin, backpackereiden suosimaan kaupunginosaan. Ilma ei aivan sita, mita odotin, silla vetta tulee taivaan taydelta! Yritan tahailly ikkunasta jotain kuuluisia maamerkkeja, kuten oopperataloa. Kyseinen taideteos jaa talla kertaa nakematta, mutta eikohan noita tilaisuuksia viela tule. Bussi saapuu hostellin edustalle, joten jaan kyydista ja kirjaudun hostelliin. Kuulen vastaanotossa, etten paase huoneeseeni viela kahteen tuntiin. Paasen kuitenkin suihkuun, joka tulee todell... read more

Happy new year! I have slacked something shocking! I think we did so much in our trip to Queensland that I take any opportunity I can back here in Perth to sit and do nothing. That's a bit of a lie...I spend every spare minute Knitting! I love it, I have ditched my blogging for knitting! I was trying to get a scarf knit for coming back, I''m not too confident I'll complete it though! But I extend my apologies for slacking so badly on the blog front! I haven't even told you about Queensland! Firstly though Sydney was amazing! I loved it! Flying in it looked great, the airport was great, the McD's we had in the airport was great. That one hour in Sydney was fantastic! My kinda town I predict! I'm definately going ... read more

Aww...so this is my last entry from Sydney! Actually I've already left Sydney, in Melbourne now. So I'll start with my trip to the Blue Mountains. Once the holidays were over I thought I should maybe try getting out of the city and seeing some different places for a change, it of culture and all that. So I booked myself a Blue Mountains tour. Caught the coach at 6 yes 6am.....but Zellini's have got me well used to my early mornings so not so bad. From Sydney we made our way inland to....yes you guessed the Blue Mountains. The views were stunning, took some beautiful walks in the national park area. Got on the steepest railway in the world to take us down into the parklands, actually the train was almost vertical going down and then ... read more

What is Christmas all about? In the northern hemisphere (well at least in London) Christmas seems a conveniently timed festival……. Just as we’re all just getting cold and miserable and then we have an excuse to take some time away from work, spend time with family, indulge in some festive food, get drunk, buy/receive presents and do many other things which on the whole will make us feel better. Many ex-pats in oz exchange comment on how it doesn’t feel like Christmas over here….. The weather for one leaves us disorientated and most won’t have family around but this year I’ve noticed something different…… I simply didn’t need Christmas as much - for every morning I am greeted by bright sunshine and most weekends are spent on the beach!!! Given my new climate and country I ... read more

2007. That's crazy. I had a really good New Year's Eve this year. We met up with one of our German Greenpeace friends, Martin, at his flat to play cards and figure out what to do for the evening. The first thing we did was go to a sweet beach themed church service at Martin's church. It was cool to hear Kiwi praise music. After that we went back to the flat and got to talking. Martin's roommates were moving out and he was needing to fill the space. Meanwhile, earlier that day, Matt and I had been talking about how restless we were getting at the hostel. The cleaning lady who was our boss for the hostel work (the condition for our free accommodation) left and the new lady who replaced her is horrible. Gale, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua January 2nd 2007

We arrived in Rotorua without having made a hotel reservation in advance. As we drove through the outskirts of town, we passed one "no vacancy" sign after another. Getting a little worried, we headed directly for the I Site. In New Zealand, just about every town has an I Site tourist center. These small offices are a godsend for tourists! Similar to AAA at home, they provide maps, brochures, and free booking services (but you don't have to be a member). The lines at this I Site were huge which only added to our concern. We picked up a handful of brochures and decided to try our luck driving around some more. Our first stop was Innes Cottage. There were a number of cars parked out front so we figured our chances of a vacancy ... read more

As children, we visualized Australia as an exotic place on the opposite side of the world. Somehow it didn’t seem nearly as far away after a four hour plane flight from Bali! But 80 degree temperatures and decorated Christmas trees soon reminded us that we were quite a distance from the gale force winds hitting Seattle. The historic port of Fremantle, known to the locals as Freo, made an attractive and comfortable base for exploring the nearby city of Perth. Perth has been compared to Seattle in many travel guides, and we agreed they weren’t far off. With a compact downtown and several large waterfront parks, it’s a great place to explore on foot in good weather. Fremantle had plenty of its own attractions, including museums, a sprawling covered produce market and a harbor full of ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Invercargill January 2nd 2007

The proof is in the photos and their descriptions so I will leave most of the explanation to those devices. Left Invercargill around 10am and headed east towards Dunedin. I realized ten minutes out of town that I had forgotten to capture Invercargill on camera. Fortunately I had a postcard of the town at hand. We stopped at various sites along the road, which was the southerly most route that we could take. Seals and penguins were elusive to our search as were the dolphins at Porpoise Bay. We were not disappointed by the wildlife on the Otago Peninsula (Dunedin). The Royal Albatross, the largest bird in the world nests on the peninsula. The wingspan is 9 to 10 feet across. Graceful in the air but completely uncoordinated on the ground. Facts and facts, blah blah ... read more
