Our final destination before returning to the UK was Dubai where we spent just a couple of nights. It was a long flight from Auckland to Dubai, especially when our entertainment units packed up - a 13.5 hour flight with no TV - nightmare! We were given a glass of champagne, 2 bottles of wine and a pack of playing cards as consolation - how generous! Dubai was the only location where we had pre-booked accommodation. We tried a 'Top Secret' deal on the Internet. Fortunately we ended up staying at the Crowne Plaza, which was very comfortable. We took heed of lots of advice we'd been given about Dubai and avoided the beach or 'building site' locations as well as the busy city centre. Dubai really is one big building site - so much development ... read more

After having successfully push-started "Smelly Nelly", we found ourselves on the ferry from Wellington through the wonderful Marlborough Sounds to Picton, a place which turned out to be one of our favourites. Although Picton has a high volume of people travelling through it, it maintains a really peaceful atmosphere and we ended up spending a number of days here at the beginning and end of our 4 week trip around the South Island. Our first evening in Picton was spent with a couple called John and Katie who were our neighbours on the campsite. We started chatting and a few hours and a few bottles of wine later, we were the best of friends! They had recently got engaged in Christchurch and were heading back to the North Island so we were able to get lots ... read more

WaitangiAfter landing in Auckland, we took a shuttle bus from the airport to the ferry terminal in the city centre and took a boat over to Devonport on the North Shore. As Auckland has now grown so big, there are now 5 separate cities within it, so we were technically staying in 'North Shore City'. We started our 2 month stay here in style, staying with our friends Sid and Christine, whose holiday apartment turned out to be a luxurious house in the very pretty town of Devonport. From their breakfast table, we enjoyed the views of Auckland City across the water and soon joined the locals in their favourite pastime of watching the various ships coming and going into the harbour. Unfortunately we mis-timed our stay and failed to see the arrival of the Queen ... read more

We flew in to Proserpine via Brisbane, Proserpine being the nearest airport to Airlie Beach which is the gateway to the Whitsundays. Proserpine airport is a bit bizarre, it has an outdoor departure lounge and baggage collection area! Presumably they don't get a lot of rain, however the day we arrived was an exception. We caught a shuttle into town and booked our accommodation and excursions through the local visitor centre. The staff there were very helpful and we managed to get a lovely studio apartment overlooking the bay and a cut price deal on a 3 day/2 night sailing trip. Our sailing trip departed the following day so we stocked up on alcohol and disposable underwater cameras, packed our 2 little carry bags each, which was the sum total of our luggage allowance, and reported ... read more

Quarantine in Australia is a little stricter than most countries, they took Laura's shoes away to be fumigated and not a moment too soon in Phil's opinion. Our friend Ross was waiting for us and ferried us to their new home in Putney that he and his wife Lyndal had just moved into. We spent a few days with Ross and Lyndal and while they were at work we were out and about exploring Sydney. We caught the bus to Circular Quay, wandered around the Opera House and the Rocks, had lunch overlooking the harbour and climbed to the top of the Harbour Bridge pylon and took in the spectacular views (we opted not to do the bridge climb on grounds of cost). One evening we went out for dinner with Ross & Lyndal and on ... read more

We arrived in Hanoi around mid-day after a short flight from Bangkok. We found the 'Tourist Office' which was a front for a hotel chain and booked a few nights in Hanoi and a Taxi into the city at a pre-determined fixed price! The journey into the city would have been hair-raising were it not for the fact that we have now learned to ignore the overwhelming urge to crawl under the seat in fear and just shut our eyes and pretend we're somewhere else, anywhere will do. In Vietnam scooters outnumber other multi-wheeled vehicles by 200 - 1 (this is a made up statistic, but it should help you to visualise the scene). The road markings are there for aesthetic purposes only and over-taking is performed by driving right up behind someone and then hooting ... read more

We landed in Bangkok around mid-day at the new airport which had only been open for 4 weeks, we were told it is now the biggest airport in the world. Yet again we hadn’t prearranged accommodation, so we booked a room in the city through the tourist info desk at the airport. We caught a taxi to the hotel and were totally ripped off by the driver, even though he was running the meter. Unfortunately we didn’t discover the rip-off until later in our travels when we did the same taxi journey again and saw the difference in cost. Basically he drove twice the distance and took us through two toll gates instead of one, it ended up almost double the cost! We spent 4 nights in Bangkok at the PJ Watergate Hotel which was clean ... read more

We arrived in Sri Lanka on Friday the 13th of October quite late in the evening with no hotel room booked. This was a new experience for us and way out of our comfort zone. Within seconds of emerging from the terminal we were swamped by touts trying to set us up at a hotel or B&B. Faced with so much choice and not knowing who to trust we decided to splash out a few bob and stay at the 5 star Continental in Colombo which was a 30 minute hair raising dash by taxi driven by an Alonso wannabe, it didn't take us long to discover that all Sri Lankans have some form of motor racing aspirations! The 5 star rating that the hotel claimed must have been somewhat out of date, but it was ... read more

One & Only Kanuhura - Awesome!

The luxury started the moment we stepped off the Sri Lankan plane in Male. We were ushered into a beautifully furnished waiting room where we were greeted with fresh fruit juice and ice cold towels. We completed the check-in process whilst we waited for our seaplane transfer to Kanuhura. The seaplanes in the Maldives are essentially a taxi service flitting between the islands. We had 1 stop on our flight to Kanuhura to drop off passengers at another resort and then a 1/2 hour flight on to One & Only. On arrival we were greeted by name and introduced to our butler Hammed. He invited us to take our shoes off and then showed us to our Beach Villa just a few minutes walk down a sandy path. Our room was stunning, huge double bed, open-air ... read more
