In the words of Catherine Tate's nan ... "WELL!!!" But it's OK. We're alive. We survived. You might not have been worried but for a while we didn't think we'd ever see you again. Here's the tale of Wednesday 1 March in our own words ... An energetic day in store - "3-in-1 Adventure Day" along the Marlborough Sounds (Queen Charlotte Sound to be precise). Jet-skiing, sea-kayaking and mountain biking. Grand. Left our oasis of calm at 7am and drove to Picton to meet up with Nigel (owner) and Craig (guide) who were to be our sole companions for the day. Kitted up in wetsuits again (could almost grow to like them - not) and off to the harbour for adventure #1: jet-skiing, a first for both of us. Whoooopeeeeee. Fun. Lots of. And a baptism ... read more

Walked around Christchurch centre, arond the cathedral, along a street of spanish mission style pastel coloured buildings, dodging the tram, then along the River Avon through a park with a large floral clock. Tired by this point so walk back to Oasis for lunch then drove out to Akaroa on the coast, however we were still tired and the journey is long so we head back, visiting a winery on the way, which turned out to be just a restaurant. Walked around a shopping mall, spent the evening on the net looking for hostels in Sydney and true-to-form we couldn't decide on anywhere so didn't book a room. Louisa's uneaten dinner from earlier had been thoughtfully thrown in the bin, despite her leaving a note on the plate! She was devastated.... read more

New Zealand (written from Christchurch and Bondi) (Yes, another long vacation blog, but hey, it's my second to last one, indulge me!) There's a commercial running down here in New Zealand promoting dairy farming as a way of life. The ad features people from various former careers talking about their new glamorous life as a dairy farmer. There is the ex-pharmacist, ex-fire-fighter, ex-shop manager and ex-teacher all saying how they'd never go back now that they have this career as a dairy farmer. The thing is, New Zealand is such a fabulous place, so breath-takingly beautiful at every turn, that Les and I wondered how we might fare as an ex-consultant and an ex-grad student/writer. We'd be good dairy farmers right? What a country! Maybe we were a little sun scorched coming off our six months ... read more

OK, I started writing this a week ago, but have had very limited internet access/time - I'm being weaned from my electronic addiction and am still having some sweats and autonomic dysfunction (yes, I love technology!) - so its just being published now. We're still a few days behind, but will try and catch up over the weekend - I'm only covering up to March 1st here then Melissa will bring us into Queenstown and to the South Island of New Zealand. -------------------------------------- Well, well, well... One week of the big honeymoon trip has now passed. We're now in Auckland at a comfy B&B named "Amitees of Ponsonby" getting ready to go downtown and catch the ferry across to a little island (Waiheke Island) with over 40 vineyards where we'll spend the rest of the week! ... read more

Well if you aren't interested in architecture or looking at many pictures of art deco construction you might as well skip this blog! By the way, I do have lots of pictures already uploaded but not published, over the last few months, and I am in the process of writing the journal part just now. I just upublished one for Feb 6th I think it was, about Tauranga and Bay of Plenty, and another on Feb 14th, so a word to my readers to keep checking earlier dates for these journals that I am just writing now. So back to Art Deco: I happen to really love looking at it. Pat and I went on a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in Chicago several years ago and were completely taken with the simple beauty of ... read more

The tourist world of gimmicks and trinkets has ceased to engage my imagination long ago; the wayfaring multitudes that circulate on the globetrotting circuit, however, never cease to amaze. Last night, a boyish throng of lanky Japanese visitors captured my attention. I paused to watch as each of the 15 youngsters went through an orderly procession of being individually photographed in front of a sculpture in the central square. Perhaps forging an artistic identity for himself, the digerati cameraman had positioned himself on the ground for an artistic slant on the photo shoot. A trusty apprentice came to his aid, transforming his forearms and hands into a human tripod to support the frail neck of his exemplar and buoy his head. Pausing to marvel at this masterful display of teamwork, I jumped in beside one unsuspecting ... read more

Well, we finally got out of Auckland! A few mishaps after the last entry but we moved on. We moved up North to Paihia (Pie Here!)which was beautiful. We stayed in a hostel which was pretty much right on the beach and the weather was scorching! The first thing we did was book a trip on a Catamaran. We sailed for a whole day around the Bay of Islands right near to the famous 'Hole in The Rock' where we anchored between islands and had a barbecue on the boat. During lunch we did our usual snorkelling and kayaking and tried our hand at a bit of waterskiing-except on our knees!!!! Loads of fun and I (Natalie) managed to stay on!!! Less than could be said for Paul...haha!! From the boat we sailed alongside dolphins and ... read more

So the adventures are dwindling (BUT NOT DISSAPEARING), school has started and since this is the reason I came to NZ (at least according to my school and parents) I am trying to get into the hang of it. Things are quite different, I actually got to sit down with a human and work out my full years schedule...I didn't see a person in Santa Cruz untill i wanted to leave the place! Yay for a tiny school. the student population (including grad and post-grad students) is just under 4,000. I am taking a Forestry class, Wildlife Biology class, Tourism Class, and a computer/mapping (GSI to anyone who knows what the hell it is) class. so far the biggest class is the tourism class because its a first year class...50 people! tell me any class at ... read more
