Heading towards Mount Doom 27/02/06-01/03/06 We 're finally leaving Hamilton, it's going to be weird not being at J's Backpackers anymore and we can both heartily recommend it to anybody heading to Hamilton. Trevor and Bruce show their appreciation of our stay there by ignoring our departure, there's more important stuff to be done, like bagging a place on the sofa to sleep on! We say our goodbyes to Fi and head off towards Te Kuiti. The road is fairly flat, I think Peddler's Paradise describes it as "gently rolling" and the weather is kind to us, cloudy so not too hot and a side wind which only occassionally veers to a head wind. Sadly as we're approaching Otorohanga my knee starts to play up - what a surprise! We decide to stop for the night ... read more

Yooo hooo! Us again! I dunno, you wait for a blog for days and then three come along at once! Seems we've had a change of plan this morning and now have some time to kill. Up at 6am to drive to Picton (again) - not for more horrors on a bike - but to catch the ferry to Wellington, thus ending our South Island experience. Not so fast ... Storms overnight have meant ferries have been cancelled and our 10am sailing is more likely to be 4pm ("hypothetically" said the booking agent). There are 10m swells in the Cook Strait and winds of 40-50 knots making for some very rough water. "Crisis point" in the words of the tired-and-bored-of-repeating-myself PA. Not crisis point but time for cake we say! As you can tell from the ... read more

So we finally made it to the south island. By some wierd Marc and Claire quirk we managed to end up in the south island a mere few days apart. Also unsuprisingly for us we also had a huge cock up as well. Mostly i hasten to add becasue Claire didn't send me any emails for ages and i had no idea where she was, it turned out that last Wednesday i caught the 8.30am ferry to Picton (south island port) from Wellington, and Claire managed to turn up in Wellington at Tony and Clare's house to 'find' me mid morning the smae day, only to find that i'd just sailed across. When we found out there was a mixture of laughing and shaking of the fists at the compuetr screen. Anyway we are both in ... read more

ON the toad again feels good to be there on the road a simple day to day just a quick day through some stunning seanery with a strange addiction to cattle and sheep this country seams to very nuch bassed on the out doors lifestyle and that that brings with it. Witch is grate stuff i must admitt. This time we went to a plaec called routorua witch wow it smelly but still once again quite amazind to see what strange things this world can create for us to both look at and use. But first a trip to rotorua montain hill whatever it was called for a rather fun go at louge witch sounds rather deadly but not really its a safe versions if there is one that is as you are on concrete ... read more

Right - I'm back in civilisation. Have been to visit "Old Macdonald" on a farm in the midlle of nowhere and some very strange locals in "barrytown". Both were very small places filled with villagers whose main passtime seems to be to perv over the young girls who come in on the backpacker buses. Old Macdonald was particulalry bad and growled "ooo ahhhh I'll be waiting for you" every time he saw anything female. I decided to abandon the "f*ck truck" and go off on my own. This was slightly scary as having taught me how to sail a big boat the lovely Kiwis just dumped me on a beach on my own and told me I had to hike to the accommodation. Unfortunately for me the accommodation (a boat) had sailed away for the day, ... read more

The team is ready to leave Kansas City International Airport on Wednesday and fly to Los Angeles. With an eight hour layover in LA, Cindy has planned an afternoon for us in Santa Monica (her old stomping ground) for lunch and touring. She jokes, I think, saying she wants to take us to the public transit bus barn (described as exciting for a transit expert like her) but I think there will be a revolt. We are ready and excited about our trip and look forward to learning about New Zealand and making new friends. Mark Twain: Travel can be fatal to your perceptions and prejudice. ... read more

Well here you are you lucky people - a geek's guide to Lord of the Ring locations in New Zealand. Whilst we were here we went to quite a few sites on our own and even forked out quite a swedge of cash to do a tour. It's pathetic really! Anyway here are the fruits of our own particular quest as the fellowship of the, well, saddos really. We are looking forward to getting home to wear the replica hobbit costumes we ordered whilst we were out here. I like big furry feet. Rick says we've got a lovely pair of anoraks to wear when we get home too. ... read more

From Te Anau, we drove across to the Catlins, in search of this areas native wildlife. Our wildlife tour went as follows: We battled the high winds at Roaring Bay (hence the name!) and hid in the hide to try and spot the rare Yellow Eyed Penguins. It was freezing and so windy - but no sign of the little blighters! There are only 3000 of the left worldwide, and around 300 in this part of the world, so they are pretty thin on the ground. Nugget Point was the next stop. It was a short walk along a narrow strip of land, leading to a lighthouse. The rocks either side of the walk to the point had tonnes of seals basking on them. Our final stop was Surat Bay, a lovely beach and home of ... read more

The last few days Michelle and I were on the Milford Track here in Fjordland. The track itself starts from the top of Lake Te Anau and follows the route that the original explorers took trying to pass a pass from Te Anau to Milford Sound. It's been called "The Finest Walk in the World" but in the interest of full disclosure, that was said around 1950 I think. It's still a fantastic "tramp" as the kiwis call it; probably one of the best in the world. Here's a quick summary of the 4 days: Day 1 The first day is really short and easy. You only travel 5 km on easy terrain. I think they make it easy for the day hikers that are allowed on the trail at this point. You have to take ... read more
