Her er bl.a. nordøens højeste bjerg Mount Ruapehu. Vi ... read more

Whanganui River Road and Tongariro NP December 6, 2008 We had so much fun today! We decided we had seen enough of Wellington to satisfy us. I know that many tourists stay a week there and we walked around for only four hours. But, we have such a short time on the North Island that we felt the need to get a move on. There is a town called Wanganui and a river called Whanganui (long story why they’re spelled differently) but we saw both today. Wanganui was having some sort of celebration with booths and bands and lots of food. The town is raising money to restore a cable car and we listened to a gentleman tell us the history of that venture for about 15 minutes, or so it seemed. The city has already ... read more

Hi everyone! This is my first blog entry. I just got home today after spending a few days over in Hastings and Napier, which although it was full-on & non-stop, and tiring physically and mentally, was an awesome time! On the second day, we were invited to a guy Leon knows - Mike; who lives in Taradale, Napier ("one of" the richest suburbs) and we had lunch in an awesome pad! We had a nice time there, it was great getting out of the heat; but it was short-lived because before we knew it, we were back into it all. I'm home one night, and one day, and then I'm off again to Taihape on a GloryFire Miracle Crusade to Taihape. I'll be spending the majority of that time resting. We will be staying at a ... read more

Day 11 We have spent the last couple of days trying to survive major storms! We have called ourselves The Storm Runners rather than storm chasers! In Christchurch after we wrote our last blog the weather got really bad and we heard that the road we had just come down (the major state highway 1) had been closed due to land slips, so we were lucky that we got through when we did. It rained all night AGAIN, and we were woken in the night with a 'glug glug' sound, we leapt up because we thought we were floating but it was the sewage disposal over flowing and was something else floating not us!!!!! we woke up in the morning to floods and at reception they informed us that christchurch was cut off so we couldn't ... read more

On Friday, we headed off on SH45 - the Surf Coast Highway which runs all the way around the western edge of Taranaki, is a highway, on the coast, and has surf. We again hoped that we could see the top of Mount Taranaki, but again there was cloud. We stopped for brunch in pub on way and made it into Wanganui by late afternoon. The rain that evening was terrific and after a 30 second (aborted) attempt to go for an evening stroll, we were glad to stay indoors. We watched the NZ film "River Queen" which is set during settler times and was shot on the Whanganui River upon which the town sits. (For linguistically obscure reasons the town is Wanganui with a "W" and the river is Whanganui with a "WH" although both ... read more

Arrived at the ferry check in, we found the ferry had been cancelled and we'd have to wait 5 hours for the next one. But luckily we could transfer to the other ferry company and hitch a ride sooner. And it turned out to be interesting, with an alarm drill, the sighting of dolphins catching the sun as they leapt, and a glorious blue sky. Made the Wellington hostel before it closed and travelled up to Wanganui today. We had a ride on an old steam paddle ship for a couple of hours - so restful - then walked the tunnel and rode the lift through the rock to the top of the hill. Use your imagination. There are some pictures, I hope. ... read more
