Moutoa Gardens are right near the CBD, just across the road from the river. They are a must-see if you are interested in local history and land wars. The occupation of the Gardens in 1995 helped make them well-known due in part to controversial actions that were taken there such as the destruction of the statue of John Ballance. It was difficult for many to look beyond these actions to the reasons behind the occupation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moutoa_Gardens https://nzhistory.govt.nz/media/photo/moutoa-gardens-protest I have added links to websites that will provide you with all the details you need. We all know I don't believe in boring you to tears with information you aren't interested in. Hopefully my photos will give you an idea of what you can expect to see. If you are travelling through Whanganui and the kids n... read more

https://www.facebook.com/whanganuiheritagemonth4500/ I love my city. Only Whanganui could have six weeks in a month. The number of activities and events planned for this year's Heritage Month meant the month sort of became extended, running from 2 August to 15 September. This year there is an amazing line-up of events. I grabbed one of their leaflets and decided to highlight the ones I absolutely have to attend. It would have been quicker to highlight the ones I wouldn't be attending! The highlights for me include the Airport Control Tour Restoration Group's Runway Mile event, the self-guided tour of stained glass windows and the Tramways Weekend. My advice is to check out the FB page (the link is at the top of this blog) and make a plan. If you have kids, the free rides on the tram ... read more

I was out and about today, taking photos to help promote a local organisation, and found this gallery along the way. I quickly found myself completely side-tracked. There are 8 artists who are part of this gallery and the best part of your visit will be meeting at least one of them. I was very fortunate to meet the artist who had created the gorgeous mosaics I loved. He was kind enough to talk me through what his works involve and the inspiration behind them. The personal touch makes such a difference when you are as completely without artistic ability as I am! For me to promote a business they have to be great. I love the range of works this gallery has eg there is a very tall bright pink giraffe that is now on ... read more

A few months ago I joined the Whanganui Airport Control Tower Restoration Group (Inc) which is a bit of a mouthful. This group was formed in 2004 in order to retain the control tower and to create an Aviation Museum and Education Centre in it. Even though I think it is one of the ugliest buildings ever put up, and is below a hill which sort of defeats the purpose it was built for as you can't see planes as they fly over the city, it is am important part of our aviation history. It is even listed as a Category 1 Heritage building in the Whanganui District Council Heritage Register. If you think I am sounding fairly knowledgeable, it's because I am quoting from the Group's informative pamphlet which I am sure they will forgive ... read more

If you are travelling between Wanganui and Palmerston North and want to see something unusual, take a short side trip to the settlement of Ratana. And make sure you have your camera charged as the Ratana Church is stunning. You can take photos from outside the fence but please read the sign at the entrance and follow the rules. The Wikipedia link below will provide you with the history of the Church and the settlement. It is worth the short drive and there is a dairy there so you can grab a snack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rātana_pā... read more

Note from the editor. There has been some feedback from the younger (and some older) readers that there are too many difficult words in the text. Is this a story for children or adults they ask? Well, it is meant for both, for all children and all adults who have left part of their children's brain alive, which is most adults, although many don't want to know it. The reader must realise that this story is told through the eyes of a donkey. Their brains are of similar seize as a four year old but Donkey’s are known to take a fancy to more complex words which they pick up here and there while they grow up. They like to use them, even if they don’t always know their meaning. If you are a child (or ... read more

I love flying. Over the years I have spent quite a bit of time in light aircraft as well as being stuck on long-haul flights or doing aerobatics in a Harvard or Pitts Special. So when the call came, offering me a flight at the Wanganui Aero Club, I had my bag packed, the puppy in the car and was on my way before I had finished the call. I used to live in Wanganui and now live 5 hours away but there was a plane sitting down there with my name on it. On my way I collected Tony, my best friend's long suffering husband, who is used to being dragged out geocaching with me. He didn't expect to find himself flying a plane this time! The Aero Club is really easy to find out ... read more
