Left Napier in a more mundane form of transport - our campervan. Lovely quiet road skirting the Tongariro National Park. Great views of the volcano and seems like only yesterday that we were doing the Tongariro Crossing (not 5 years ago!). Although the weather is hot - 30 degrees - there was snow on the mountain tops. Now heading for Pipiriki along a narrow road bounded by a deep gorge. Lyn driving and fortunately didn't meet any traffic. On the way we noticed several little areas where we could pull off the road for an overnight free camp. However we needed to find the Whanganui River Adventure HQ so pressed on. So glad we did as they have a beautiful flat small campsite just above the river and surrounded by tree ferns - only one other ... read more

Arrived in Wanganui after a safe drive up the west coast from Elvin, journey took around an hour and a half. Stopped off in a towns calleds Bulls not much there but the inhabitants had a sense of humour, see pics. Spent a little time sorting out some accomodation then decided to go to the movies, went to see The Quartet very funny. Arrived at the ferry where the paddle boat was anchored after a short walk along the river. the funnel started to belch out black smoke then we were underway up the Wanganui river. We meandered along with points of interest along the way. Apparently according to legend two gods loved the same woman one Taranaki left to find peace elsewhere, en route he gauged out a huge trench which became the river and ... read more

... read more

Wanganui. Wednesday 27 April 2011 Not particularly much to do here today. Bit rainy but lots of Glass Art studios and art galleries to stroll around. Gonna have to get this Warranty of Fitness (WOF) situation for my van sorted before I get pulled over and arrested. Searched for mechanics that could get the WOF over and done with asap so I can get a more on up to Taranaki and New Plymouth. ... read more
