Hi All, Donavin reporting in after a fantastic canoe trip along the Whanganui River over the Christmas/New Year’s holiday break. Question: When is a Great Walk not a walk? Answer:-. When it is a canoe trip down the Whanganui River. Don't ask me why, but the Whanganui River Journey is designated as one of the nine Great Walks of New Zealand. For the last three years, since Marcos made the suggestion, I’ve been fixed with the idea of canoeing slowly down one of New Zealands most beautiful and pristine rivers – that idea became reality this year. To travel down the Whanganui is also to experience in part the history of New Zealand; the river was an important travel route for hundreds of years for the Maori who lived along its shores and, in the early ... read more

Wangnui (they don’t pronounce the 'g') was great. I had a traditional English breakfast in the pub downstairs. I also went back to the coffee shop/ restaurant I had dinner at last night. The beautiful girl I saw passing through was working as a waitress/barista. I had the feeling I could have stayed in that little town for a while. The people were exceptionally nice. Also, I had internet for the first time in a day. No real email, but I did get a chance to chat with my friend... After yesterday's drive, I was anxious to get to Wellington. Oh! I got a speeding ticket! It was kind of exciting actually. The guy cut me a break and only marked me for 18kph over instead of the 38kph over that I was actually driving. What ... read more

This morning we went to Wanganui, but since it was Sunday a lot of the stores and shops were closed. But the weather was nice, so we walked around the downtown area for awhile. The main street has gas lamps, which is pretty cool. I could see how charming it would be to visit at night or during a holiday (when everything would be decorated). We lucked out that the glass blowing studio, Chronicle Glass Studio and Gallery, that we wanted to visit was open (usually they are closed on Sundays). Some artists had rented the place out to make glass trophies. It was a lot of fun to watch the artists work. They studio was down below, so you could watch from the upper level. There were people there who knew the artists and could ... read more

This is a relatively short blog however there were too many photos to justify attaching it to a different blog. So Thursday morning we started our scenic drive to Wanganui going via Turangi and the Wanganui river road. The drive was amazing as the photos demonstrate. The driving over here is really easy and we rarely saw more than 2 cars an hour. Thursday evening we arrived in Wanganui and decided to stay the night at the hostel. When we checked in we found we were the only people there however we were soon joined by four “older” ladies who we had seen in our hostel in Rotorua. We soon nicknamed them the blue rinse brigade. As Steve and I were on our way out to get our chippy dinner we got embroiled in a conversation ... read more

Wanganui 16th - 17th April 2009 We would have loved to spend quite a bit of time in Wanganui as there was a five day wilderness trip we would have liked to do in canoes along the river, and the weather was perfect for it. However, we were feeling the pressure of needing to push on to Auckland to sell our van and felt that was more important. We will have to come back one day for the canoe trip. Instead, we drove a little way up the river where we found a rope swing which was great fun. The next day we had to leave, but drove the scenic way along part of the Whanganui River, which was stunning.... read more

18th February 2009 - A REST DAY AT LAST!!! I woke up at around 8am and had slept a little better after finally admitting defeat and taking a painkiller or 2 for my shoulder!! I wrote in my journal for a while when I woke before having breakfast and reading my book outside in the sun. I had special k for breakfast and it really was the perfect start to the day...such a treat!!! It was a very nice day too...no clouds or wind...just sunshine!! I also did a shed load of washing too...all by hand of course (Nora Batty would be proud) and hung it out to dry. Nat got up and out of bed at around 9.30 and we both just milled around the hostel all morning doing jobs that had been piling up, ... read more

18/2/09 = A chilled day with an Underground Elevator Opened eyes at 7am, but room so cosy that closed them and went straight back to sleep again :) Opened them up for good at 8am, having nearly had a 12hr sleep. Brilliant! Could have drifted again, but any more sleep would be bordering on lazy! Stayed in bed dozing until 9 (dozing, not sleeping), then Deb came and delivered bad news to me. Could stay another night, but had to leave room by 10am until 1pm for cleaning. Not happy with that...planned to stay in bed and relax for at least another few hours. Couldn't even just move to sofa; had to vacate building. Went to plead with hostel man and actually didn't need any pleading. Took one look at me in my half asleep state ... read more
