So having spent a peaceful night in Stellenbosch it was time to set off for the Cape of Good Hope and Paula and I's last full day together in the car. Breakfast turned into a disaster as the night before I had picked up some bread in the supermarket and that morning we soon learned why it was the only bread left on the shelves as it was as solid and heavy as a rock and after one slice it was settled in the stomach like a layer of cement. Needless to say it was decided that the rest of the loaf could be donated to any other travel who dared eat it! With a rough idea of which way we were heading (which involved driving through the centre of Cape Town we set off). The ... read more

So we left Hermanus on Saturday morning but first things first and we had wanted to visit the craft market and finish off some of present shopping since the end of the trip is getting nearer. Presents bought and a picnic lunch purchased from Woolworths we jumped in the car and headed for Greyton. The drive was a straightforward one but did afford us some beautiful views. Just outside of the town we passed a small creek and Paula thought she spotted an otter causing an emergency stop and a U-turn however whatever it had been that she had seen it had disappeared. After a picnic lunch on the grass next to the Church in Greyton we set off again. As per the recommendation in my guide book we went via Genadendal which is the first ... read more

Having fed and watered ourselves Paula and I jumped into the Corsa and headed for Hermanus. This was going to be our chilled out and relaxing time. We arrived into Hermanus without incident and checked into the hostel. We decided to walk into town and stretch our legs and also see if we could spot any Whales however they weren't playing afternoon. That evening we headed out into the town and searched for food and we ended up at a really nice Italian. Here in South Africa it is funny as often if you park in the streets you will find parking attendants both official and unofficial who will “look after you car” whilst you are away in return you usually pay them between R2 and R5 (16p to 40p). Having eaten we returned to our ... read more

So on our arrival in Plett (as Plettenberg Bay is known locally) we found ourselves in the middle of an unplanned electricity cut so finding dinner proved a difficult task however we were fortunate to stumble across a fantastic restaurant where Paula was served up a veggie stir fry and I was able to feast on some local seafood. Sunday morning and the decision was made that after a long day in the car the day before we would just spend the day relaxing in and around Plett which is just what we did and it was even better given the weather was warm but slightly overcast with the occasional hint of sun. One of Paulas wishes for Plett was that she wanted to go to Tsitikamma National Park and do their aerial runway through the ... read more

So Thursday morning we set off heading for the small village in the Karoo called Nieu Bethesda. I had been told about the place by Andrea in Pietermaritzberg and during a conversation he had told me that the Karoo is his favourite place in all of South Africa and that if I headed that way I should stay at the Owl House Backpackers in Nieu Bethesda. So when I met up with Paula I told her that we were going to be doing a diversion for a couple of days but she was more than happy to join me for the ride. Initially our route took us north and we motored through Somerset East where we witnessed what seemed to be a peaceful protest outside the local butchers. There was a gathering of people holding up ... read more

So having landed in Port Elizabeth I had to wait awhile for Paula to turn up on the airport shuttle. Once she arrived we walked to the car hire centre and picked up our lovely white Opel Corsa... The road trip began minus a true road map but lonely planet and lots of tourist information maps in hand and we headed out for Addo. We checked into our hostel at Addo and after hunting out some food we chilled out and had an early night in anticipation of getting up early and heading into Addo Elephant Park the next day. Wednesday morning and we were rolling through the gates of Addo at 7.30am. We paid up and checked in and set off in hunt of the wildlife. We were fortunate to come across a warthog within ... read more

Having left the Sani Lodge I was safely deposited at my hostel in Pietermaritzburg. Once again it was time to say goodbye to a fellow traveller however tentative arrangements were made for Paula and I to meet up again in South Africa. I was shown around the hostel and introduced to the owners two gorgeous and very placid Afghan Hounds. I soon fell in love with the hostel since I had a large double room to myself for a cheap price. The large bed, thick and pristine white bedding and comfortable pillows were enough to make me decide to stay longer than my intended one night. Also the fact that it was only a small place and was actually Andre's home that he had opened up made it all the more nicer and it showed by ... read more

Sunday morning was spent lazing around the hostel and we eventually got picked up by the Underberg Express and headed out for Sani Lodge. We eventually arrived at 7pm however it transpired that they did not have my booking despite me e:mailing them and Paula confirming my details on the phone. Bless her Paula panicked on my behalf but in my now relaxed traveller mode I shrugged my shoulders and said that I would sleep on the sofa in my sleeping bag if no bed was available however a bed was found so we were all happy. Unfortunately the weather had taken a turn for the worse and it was pouring with rain so I deferred any decision for trips till the next day. However Monday morning rolled around and I was suffering from cabin fever ... read more

On arriving in Durban I soon settled into my dorm room and got chatting to various people in the hostel and made arrangements to spend the next day with Jean, a Dutch guy. So Wednesday morning I got up and enjoyed the delectable breakfast on offer - muesli, plain yoghurt followed by marmalade on toast.... a fantastic change from fried eggs on toast! I then got my swimming stuff together and Jean and I headed out for the day with the intention of walking down to the beach and along the promenade and then visit the aquarium at uShaka Marine World. Having reached the promenade it was clear that Durban is preparing itself for the 2010 World Cup and there were extensive renovation works going on. Having walked down onto the beach Jean started taking photos ... read more

On arriving at the hostel in St Lucia I was shown around and dumped my bags in my room. I was then taken on a free tour of the town and local area by the guide Darren. We drove down to the estuary where we came across a herd of hippos sat on a bank along with approximately 10 crocodiles. After a brief stop at the beach we then drove down through the town and he pointed out the al important supermarket, butchers, restaurants and bars. After dinner that night Darren and the hostel manager Philip took us on a night safari. However their night safari didn't involve us going out into the reserve but driving around the back streets. Whilst this sounds mad we did actually get to see quite a few bush babies close ... read more
