The Cycle Bridge: As someone who hasn't ridden a bicycle for several decades, it feels strange to blog about a cycle bridge. But this is far more than just a bridge for cyclists to use. url=https://www.whanganui.govt.nz/Your-Council/Projects-and-Initiatives/Works-Projects/Upokongaro-Cycle-Bridgehttps://www.whanganui.govt.nz/Your-Council/Projects-and-Initiatives/Works-Projects/Upokongaro-Cycle-Bridge The bridge is part of the Mountains to the Sea cycleway. It has already proven very popular with locals but there are also plenty of keen out-of-town cyclists, many of whom stay just up the road at the Holiday Park. https://www.mountainstosea.nz/shop/product/485045/whanganui-top-10-holiday-park/ I love the bridge. It is just a short drive from my home and I like to park by the r... read more

The highlight of every year for me is the Wanganui Aero Club's annual open day. It is part of our annual Vintage Weekend and is a 'must see' event. This year was the best yet, even if it was too windy for some of the scheduled flights to take place (eg the Harvard didn't make an appearance). But it didn't matter. The DC3 was running flights and the Pitts Special and the Venom put on some amazing displays as usual. There were plenty of planes to admire and the large crowd were clearly enjoying the sunshine and the fun. Well done to the Aero Club. https://www.facebook.com/wanganuiaeroclub... read more

https://www.visitwhanganui.nz/lake-westmere-whanganui/ A few minutes drive north of Wanganui is a turn-off (opposite the service station) which takes you to the Botanic Reserve. But just past the turnoff there is an area on the right where you can park which provides you with access to Westmere Lake. I have to admit that I had never bothered to visit the lake until this week when I had 2 energetic young grandkids to entertain thanks to our long long long summer holidays. Fortunately I hadn't taken my 4-legged assistant with us as dogs are not allowed there plus there are bait traps everywhere. It is quite hard to see the lake as you are either trying to look over flax bushes or are on the track which leads you all over the place and into areas where you wouldn't ... read more

https://www.facebook.com/motorvesselwairua Let's face it, 2020 was a shocker of a year. I woke on New Year's Day 2021 just feeling very grateful that I had survived 2020. I thought I would start 2021 slowly so I had a look at FB. Five minutes later I was running out the door with my backpack on, my camera in my hand and my 4-legged assistant tucked under my arm. He is always happy to head off on an adventure and I had found a brilliant one for us to start the year with. The Motor Vessel Wairua was offering trips between the bridges on the Whanganui River at the amazing price of $10 per adult and $5 per child (children under 2 and dogs were free). This was the best start to 2021 that I could have asked ... read more

The Wanganui District Council states that William Birch Park "is a magical spot with a stream running through a reserve. A great place for a picnic. This was once a popular swimming location but is no longer used for swimming due to water quality issues." Apart from the water issue, I disagree entirely. There is nothing magical about it. Even the chickens that used to rush out to meet us have left. There are a couple of geocaches there but your GPS probably won't work so read the clues before you go. There are also a couple of Munzees there but, again, you'll probably have no GPS and 1 of them has almost disintegrated entirely so don't bother to stop for them unless you really really need the points from the one under the sign. There ... read more

This is a small rose garden situated at 97A Anzac Parade. It is opposite Kowhai Park which you will be visiting if you have children with you. I have visited many stunning rose gardens in NZ but this isn't one of them. If you have been to the ones such as those in Hamilton or Te Awamutu, you will be disappointed with this one. It is small and just not very impressive. It feels more like a memorial garden. It certainly isn't worth going to unless all the roses are out in bloom late in the year. You won't need to spend much time there. Keep going and check out the gardens in Palmerston North if you are heading south.... read more

The absolute one place you have to visit when you are in Wanganui is actually about 10 drive out of the city on Rapanui Road but it is well worth the drive. You have to go out to the Bason Botanic Gardens. Not making the effort is not an option. You can turn right at the big green sign opposite the petrol station if you are heading into Wanganui from the north and continue on until you see the entrance, otherwise head north out of Wanganui and you will see the turnoff very soon after you enter the 100kph zone. http://www.basonbotanicgardens.org.nz/ The gardens are huge. There are indoor gardens with flowers and plants for everyone to admire, outdoor gardens with an amazing collection of plants and plenty of space for the kids to run round. Dogs ... read more

Wanganui has a deer park that seems to have been there forever. It was a popular place to visit in the school holidays when I was a child and that was a long time ago. If you come into Wanganui from the north, you will see Virginia Road on your left. Follow it to the bottom of the hill where you will see Peat Park and a sign showing where the Deer Park is. I have small grandchildren so have visited the deer on several occasions. The best advice I can give you is: do NOT expect to see any deer! There is a stag with his entourage of females but they can be extremely difficult to see. They are often hiding in the grass at the bottom of the hill so try to spot the ... read more

At the beginning of October I took my grandkids out to Bason Reserve. One of the highlights at this time of year is the abundance of beautiful orchids there. I will let the photos tell their own story. They were all taken while I was being dragged past them at high speed by a 4 year old and a 6 year old and you will notice how much humidity was there in a few of them. If you love orchids then make sure you head out to the Reserve September/October and enjoy the displays.... read more

Writing about the lovingly restored Number 12 Tram that is located next to the i-Site in Wanganui should be easy. But it isn't. I have seen it running on Saturday mornings through the markets. I have the photos to prove it. But trying to find information to attach to this blog proved difficult. I had a page from a pamphlet from the i-Site which provided me with a website, but it doesn't exist any more. Google gave me a few options such as the fact the Tramways Museum is open on a Sunday afternoon. I gave up and searhed for their FB page which they actually have. This will give you the best idea of what to expect and when you can expect to see it! https://www.facebook.com/wanganuitramways/ If you happen to be in Wanganui at a ... read more
