Geo: -17.8, 177.42We are working our adaptability muscles. Every time we drop into a new city or country with new surroundings, climate, currency, perhaps language and if not language an accent or habits that are unfamiliar it requires us to let go of what we are comfortable with and embrace the new. Each time I can feel my mind, body and soul aching for the more familiar then settling into the excitement and challenge of another place. It's all good. In fact I really dislike it when I am feeling stuck or too attached; it is a sign to change things up. After our first 10 hours of travel, we arrived in LA with the intention of rendezvousing with my brother. Without any cell phone or access to internet and having sent him only our itinerary ... read more

16. Oktober 2012 - Abflug nach Auckland, NZ 18. Okt. - nach 30 Stunden Flug Landung in Neuseeland: Begrüßung durch den Zollbeamten: "Welcome tp New Zealand, no worries, I am a friendly person!" 19. Okt. 20. Okt. - unser Flug nach Savusavu, Insel Vanua Levu wird abgesagt wegen "Heavy Thunderstroms, Low Pressure all over the coutry") 21. Okt.

Bula, a word used by every person, regardless of where they originate, workers along the waterfront, hotel guests and screaming school children. Meaning hello, it's the main Fijian word used where most people's mother tongue is English. And boy did we hear it hundreds of times daily. Despite the fact we went nowhere! Our flight from Auckland was a good one, fairly good breakfast on the early morning three hour flight where although we advanced, we went back in time an hour (Fiji do not have spring daylight saving for its always sunny*.) We were greeted by a man wearing a skirt (completely normal) playing a banjo singing in Fijian folk (even more normal), we got through customs fine and although many staff wanted us to take a taxi we got the public bus, success. Although ... read more

6 October 2012 Saturday. We arrived in Suva, Fiji at 8 am as we were having breakfast. The rain had followed us from Samoa, but it soon changed to overcast skies for the rest of the day. We disembarked and walked along the waterfront to a Catholic Mission that Mike had volunteered at 3 years ago. We talked to the priest for a bit; but he wasn’t the priest that Mike knew from his last visit so we didn’t spend much time there. We then walked down the hill to the botanical garden and Fiji Museum. There were mostly canoes on display. Linda bought two necklaces from a lady who had two small girls who looked like they could use a good meal. While the girls headed along the main shopping street back to the ship, ... read more

We are now waiting in the transit lounge in Fiji. It is warm and humid outside. We would all love to stay here for a few days before heading off to NZ. J Maybe on the next trip to NZ or Aus if we have more time (and of course money) we will stay here. Our stopover in LA was not pleasant. That airport is one crazy, disorganized place. We were glad to get out of there! My fears about our flight on Air Pacific being cancelled because of not enough seat sales were unfounded! The 747 was packed full. Boarding this plane took forever because there are seats on a 747. Anyway, once everyone was on board, the plane was ready to go at the scheduled time. However, we ended up sitting on the tarmac ... read more

BULA!!! Saturday 22nd September - Tavewa Island (Coral View Resort) and the Blue Lagoon …continued… We were due to go snorkelling in the Blue Lagoon this afternoon but in the end decided to go to ‘Suntan Beach’ because we could only go at low tide. So Sarah, Brian, Sophie, Leonie (had met her on Bounty, she’d newly arrived on Coral View at lunchtime), Dominique, Marc (from our room) and I headed out in the boat across the lagoon. We were not sure where we were going and then we saw a little bar of sand in the distance about 100metres off the nearest beach. The boat dropped us off and we spent a lovely couple of hours relaxing and posing about for photos. It was such a nice spot, the bar got a little bigger but ... read more

Bula again! Wednesday 19th September – Bounty Island to Waya Lailai Island (Naqalia Resort) continued My worst fear (that I was going to be the only one there!) looked about to be realised as I was the only person on the boat to Naqalia Resort! The sea was rough today and it was a struggle to get off the big boat onto the little boat, I had to jump. I was soon reassured when the little boat driver told me we’d be 4 on the island tonight, that was ok J We sped along the coast of Waya Lailai, past one of the villages and the Waya Lailai Eco Resort. Naqalia was tucked away in its own little cove and they were singing a welcome song from the beach. I was given the warmest welcome and ... read more

Bula! Sunday 16th September – Nadi, Fiji It was light outside by the time we arrived at 6.30am ish from Samoa and we had a really bumpy landing. The whole arrivals process was much much quicker than when I arrived in Fiji last November. They did insist on starting to search my luggage because they could see fruit on the scanner… there was no fruit! I sorted out a new Fiji SIM and found my transfer to the Smuggler’s Cove hostel. We had a couple of stops on the way through Nadi to pick up supplies. The people were so friendly and welcoming at Smuggler’s and although it was so early I could check straight in. The girls dorm was really nice, I’d normally stay in a mixed dorm but had chosen the girls because it ... read more
