The Coral Coast of Fiji has left me with A lifetime of warm, happy and joyous memories. Pristine aqua waters that sparkle and reach out forever, beyond glittering white sands. Sounds of the gentle swaying of palm trees whispering about the love of life, and the honour it is to be here. People go about their business with an inner pride and love for life. Beautiful smiles that greet you, a stranger, exuding all the warmth and help they are prepared to give. A frangipani is placed in your hair to welcome you into their world, and with it comes an invitation to share and enjoy their lives. Untouched nature in all its glory quietly beckons and consumes me as I wander about, in total awe and contentment. Beaches begging to be discovered, silently inviting us ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands » Beachcomber June 13th 2013

Today I took a catamaran,(way bigger than I thought) to the Beachcomer island, part of the mamanuca island chain. I decided to take a day trip as I heard this how many people go about visiting the Beachcomber island. I had the time of my life, I took the seafari trip and got to visit the island where Cast Away the movie was filmed. I love that movie and the island was insanely beautiful. The people at the beachcomber resort greeted me with a 4 person band playing ukuleles ! We then visited a village and drank kava and hung out with the locals. The beaches are great, my room was very clean and the bar served decently priced drinks, not to mention th music. I cant wait to see what fiji has in store for ... read more

My second day in Nadi was more than just a little humid. I suppose everyday here has 50%+ humidity and i should just get used to it. lol Anyways I started the day early to beat the heat and take a walk. Down the road i came across a larger resort that was much busier than my little hostel, i made a mental note to stop by later. I had it in my mind that today I was going to get out a scour the whole island not stop, but the humidity proved too much for me as I was still adjusting. I decided to spend the rest of the afternoon out by the pool and catching up on some reading in my hostel until later that night. Around 6 I took a walk back down ... read more

So here I am in Nadi! Many of my friends back home that have been to Fiji told me to skip Nadi altogether and head to the surrounding islands. I plan to stay and see for myself what Nadi has to offer. As I have just arrived at Bamboo Hostel all i can relate to you so far is the airport and check-in at said hostel. The airport was nice, just visibly old (old carpeting and upholstery on the seats). I wanted to connect to the internet at the airport Wi-Fi to post about my flight but the hassle of their Wi-Fi connection procedure had me frustrated and heading for the nearest taxi. LOL the taxis here are a hilarious occasion, you can pack as many people as will fit into the taxi, but at the ... read more

Australia; a country which, for two months, had shown us an immense level of impressive beauty, a great deal of fun and a much different way of travelling to the first three months of the trip. I have spoken more than once about expectations and I think perhaps the biggest of all of these is that of "travelling" as a generalised term. Not just your own expectation but the expectations of the people standing outside and looking in; the friends and family conducting everyday life as normal or the ex-colleagues left behind in the jobs that you were once a part of. In all honesty, South East Asia probably conforms in the most idealistic ways, to the mass visions of "travelling"- those images of riding on silhouetted elephants against a backdrop of longtail boats and burnt ... read more

More than four months into this crazy journey and it is almost at its end. On any given day I go back and forth between just wanting to get the hell out of dodge, and not wanting to ever leave this weird, not so perfect, paradise. In less than a month and a half I will have my feet planted firmly back on US soil, I will have my dog constantly at my side again, I will have consistent wifi, a Starbucks down the street, Chick-fil-a within walking distance, my momma back on speed dial, and my beautiful Jeep sitting in the driveway just begging me to load up the dogs and go for a drive. Maybe it is a little bit too early for me to start getting nostalgic, but regardless, I am. Before I ... read more

It's over two months since we arrived in Fiji so this is a rather rose tinted view of our time there; Torrential rain; compulsory meals of corned beef and cold smelly showers are all but forgotten. We arrived in Fiji on the 15th of February into Nadi airport where we were greeted by tradition Fiji music played by men wearing Hawaiian shirts and Leis with big smiles and I remembered why I wanted to go come back to Fiji. By the time we had got off the plane to leaving the airport we had probably heard the phrase 'BULA' about 20 times; Andy decided he hated it which wasn't a good omen for the coming weeks as it seems to be used for hello/welcome/thankyou and all through Kava ceremonies at random time - more of this ... read more

Some highlights from our Fiji experience while we stayed at Mango Bay: The men singing and playing the guitar to welcome you as you land into the airport Everyone shouting "Bula" to you. Discovering a love for beach volleyball and table tennis Playing touch rugby with the men in the village....Tom had previously thought Wales was a rugby crazy nation but Fiji is something else! About 50 men from the village of only a couple of hundred meet to play rugby every night. We were invited to have dinner with one of the local families by a woman called Riabi who we met on the beach while she was selling jewellery and sarongs; a great chance to try some authentic Fijian food and experience the culture. The food was delicious, fresh fish poached in coconut milk, ... read more

First blog entry! Internet is limited here on Fiji, but wanted to just put something out. Went out on a 2 dive trip to South Sea Island. Really nice! Diving in 82 degree water sure is the best... First time in warm water diving. No wet suit needed! Great experience. Jim and I were going to do another 2 dives this morning, but when we got to the place in Moni, the boat wouldn't start. Boo! So unfortunately no more diving for me in Fiji, as my flight to Melbourne leaves tomorrow at 5:30pm. So today is probably gonna be hitting some inland stuff. A hike would be nice... Well, off to some adventures!... read more
