Fiji continued, this entry is based on the trip report I wrote for the 4wd club. Adrenaline junkie A nice easy start to the day, everyone being a little tired from the long day of travel yesterday. A hearty breakfast was taken in the open air tropical surrounds of our environment, but it was soon time to get down to the business of the day and that was to find sunbeds for 10, the biggest decision being which pool to sit next to as the choices were endless, the final decision was based on the one with the least number of children. It was clear that not having access to a 4wd over here was not going to deter anyone’s fun, investigations took place into some ... read more

Finally the long awaited 4wd club girls trip to Fiji, when I say long awaited, we only planned it a few months ago, but all 10 of us were very eager to get there. Various methods of travel, trains, coaches, planes and cars, the 10 of us eventually group together at the Sydney International Airport Inn for our overnight stay in Sydney. We had 2 rooms for the 10 of us which was cosy to say the least, the important thing was for us all to be together in preparation for our early flight in the morning. Dinner at the rowing club and in no time at all we had returned to the hotel for a cup of tea party in one of the rooms, only to find that some of us had a text message ... read more

So, made it to Fiji and glad I made the trip. My gut response was it's like a combo of Hawaii, Tonga and the Whitsundays. No a bad start! The wqeather the last 2 days hasdnt been super duper but the sun has been pout all day today and I am makingthem ost of it. I lefty the smallest island- South Sea Island today after spending my first 2 days there. It's tiny and more like a Fijian homestay than anything else. Last night we sat around the table drinking cava which numbs your mouth and makde my limbs go all heavy. The food there was tyo die for and despite the cloudy weather I had a ball. Now i'm on Manta Ray island and tonight I'm going to see the sunset via a tube cruise. ... read more

Tuesday 17th June - So back 2 stops towards Nadi on the Yasawa Flyer to Octopus Island where transferred to smaller fishing boat for Viwa Island Resort as off the main ferry track. The captain handed over to youngest member while he and his mate had smoko break and it was a fun, VERY bumpy ride. Arrived to the now normal greeting of musicians and scented frangipan garlands. Only 11 bure’s here that accommodate 28 maximum guests, but learnt only 2 other couples at the moment so pretty much have the resort to ourselves and the poshest one yet. All bures on the waters edge complete with sunbeds, hammock, white softest sand ever then straight into the sea. Mmmmm. Viwa Island is a very low lying coral atoll that was once below sea level and no ... read more

Wednesday 13thJune - Woken by small drops of rain blewing in through the wooden slats which was quite pleasant until they got slowly bigger followed by huge downpour at which point we had to act. Realize Fiji cant be this lush without a lot of rain! The mozzie spray hasn't been working too good and as usual they have taken a real shine to me, one particularly attractive welt on my stomach is definitely the champion so far. Julian tried the $10 for a bag of washing, to find his white t-shirt has come back blue and he's gained a few xtra items. However, Nanuya resort is Fijian and extremely well run, the Bures are very clean and good standard, the food is excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful so would fully recommend this ... read more

We arrived in Fiji on Thursday 17th May after leaving LA on the Tuesday and losing Wednesday to the international date line. We left on Saturday 26th after spending our first and last nights at the sky lodge hotel on the main land and the rest of our time island hopping. We spent our first day on the mainland relaxing by the pool after a ball aching flight through the night and set off early friday morning to catch the Awesome Adventures boat to our first island Nacula islands. After 3 hours and 45 minutes on the boat we arrived at Oarsmans bay lodge where we grabbed lunch and went to watch an inter island rugby match. I should have taken my boots with me, the kicker was rubbish I probably could have scored more points ... read more

When I left school MANY moons ago, my total achievements in foreign languages I am ashamed to say amounted to a CSE Grade 4 in French. I could blame this on the fact that my French teacher, Mr. H, was an alcoholic, had been banned from most of the pubs in Cowes and later I was told sadly died of liver Schlerosis. However, the truth was that for someone whose childhood travel highlights extended to a very unsuccessful coach trip to Scotland with their mother and school field trips to Newtown and Bembridge, I naively failed to see the point of what foreign language and travel could possibly have to do with me! Not sure what has happened lately, but bring it on!! Friday 8th June. Yesterday I was presented with a snorkel, mask and flippers, ... read more

It's been a 18 months since since I last published a travel blog. The date is Wednesday, May 1st, 2012 and time to head to Fiji. I think, my wife, Caroline is looking forward to having me out of the house and her hair for a month. My ticket to Fiji is with Air New Zealand and I 'm going to take the opportunity to say that I'm not impressed with their do-it-yourself approach to short-haul travel. For small hops, Air New Zealand has adopted the Ryan Air model and it's cafeteria style, luggage, food, movie , all cost extra, or you can purchase the “works” when you book,. However, if you opt for the cheapest option and want to by a snack on-board, it must be purchased with a credit card. Ugh! Enough bitching about ... read more

A WEEK IN FIJI Alex: After all the activities in New Zealand it has been lovely to get some rest and just chill in Fiji. The Anchorage Beach resort was more luxurious than the cost justified with a huge comfortable room with easy access to the pool and beach. George and Ruby met an Australian boy called Fisher, and spent several days exploring the beach mangrove swamps with him and playing in the pool. They got on so well, and we hardly saw them for hours on end, it was great! We got to read and swim, and chat with Fisher’s mother Misha and her friend Lucinta. In the evenings there was usually entertainment laid on, usually in the form of the house band playing cheesy classics. I had a few Fiji Bitters which disappointingly turned ... read more
